Chapter 1: new neighbor

Chapter Text

The Hayakawa family has never had a neighbor. Aki, their oldest son, never really minded it.

The house next to the Hayakawa house has been empty for the last 19 years, since Aki was born. That was until right now, when a moving truck pulled into the cracked driveway and a sweet little family walked through the door.

Aki watched the family through his bedroom window until loud stomping from the stairs and his name being called frantically

“Aki! Aki! Look, there’s new people moving in!”

Taiyo was his younger brother by way too many years, with Aki being 19 while his brother was only 10, making it hard for them to relate to each other and get along.

“Yeah, I saw them.”

Aki replied unenthusiastically, alredy tired of his brothers yelling.

“I’ve never had a neighbor!! I hope they have a son my age and we can be friends! This is so exciting! Aki, come say hi to them with me!”

Aki looked down at his brother as Taiyo excitedly hugged Aki’s midsection, the highest part he could comfortably reach with their ungodly height difference. Yeah, he thought his brother was annoying most of the time, but he couldn’t be mad with how excited his brother looked. He crouched down to put a hand on top of the boys head and watch his face light in joy.

“Sure, we can go see them.”

Aki says as he ruffles Taiyos hair lightly and stands up again, starting to walk down the stairs as his brother excitedly runs ahead of him.

They reach the living room just to see their parents already talking to people at the door. The three members of this family have bright and unmistakable red hair.

“Oh, speaking of my sons, here they are!”

Mrs. Hayakawa chirps happily at the neighbors as she gestures behind herself to the two boys.

Aw shit, Aki wasn’t ready to be introduced to new poeple, his hair was down, he wasn’t even out of his pajamas from that morning, and he probably stinks because of that.

He gets to take a peek at the family and they are beautiful. Like, conventionally. They look like a picture perfect family, a beautiful mother, a masculine looking father, and a gorgeous looking daughter. Wait, son? A daughter with a son face?

Aki instinctively reaches up to attempt to make his hair look a bit more presentable but it’s greasier than a good burger so it refuses to cooperate.

On the contrary, his brother jumps up and attempts to shake the parents hand with his little one.

“Hi, I’m Taiyo! I never had a neighbor!”

He calls out excitedly as Aki’s mother puts a soft hand on his head so he doesn’t get too excited and end up jumping on them.

Everyone coos and shakes his hand except for one, the daughter-son in the back, they look very bored and about to fall asleep until the mother turns around to lightly scold the kid.

“Angel, shake his hand.”

She whispers quickly which causes the tired hand to reach out and the tiny one to happily shake it.

“Anyway, this is our son, Angel.”

Oh, a son. A very beautiful son.

The red haired boy jumps slightly at hearing his name and looks up at the new family infront of him, awkwardly forcing a smile and waving his hand around, though his eyes seem to be focussed on the air between Aki’s parents.

“Well, it was nice to meet you all!”

Aki’s mother suddenly pipes up and smiles happily at them.

“If you need help with unpacking anything, we’re always right next door!”

The mothers exchange more smiles and words before the door finally closes and the family is walking back to their house.

Aki couldn’t keep his mind off of that family’s son. How could a boy have such a gorgeous appearance? He had that long hair in that gorgeous shade of red, a perfect face, and Angel didn’t even look like he was trying. Angel, huh? sure does live up to his name.

Aki realizes he’s staring at the door only when his brother pokes him back into consciousness.

“Akiii!! weren’t they cool!!!”

Taiyo jumps up and down happily by his brothers leg, smiling widely.

“Yeah, they were cool.”

Aki says and looks away from the door to look down at the boy.

“I’m so excited to have a neighbor!!”

Taiyo says happily before running away to go play outside, leaving Aki to walk back up the stairs. Aki was also excited to have a cute neighbor.

He’s gotta stop thinking like that, he shouldn’t be thinking about how cute the boy next door is.

Aki goes back upstairs to his room and flops back down onto his bed before turning around to look up at his ceiling. His ceiling fan spins around, circling the same musty air that’s been in his room for the past week. He really does stink, holy shit. Aki stands up and walks over to open his window, hoping it could let some new air in.

Angel is right there, the window across from his. He’s putting clothes into his closet. The room looks so empty, Aki wonders how Angel would decorate his room. Aki gets a look at angels clothes from his window, there’s definitely a variety of styles and colors. Some more feminine stuff, some other masculine looking clothes, that’s nice.

Aki watched the other boy mindlessly now, deep in his mind he might feel weird for staring at and basically stalking his new next door neighbor, but the louder part of his brain is focused on how the boy moves around his room, how that shiny red hair swishes back and forth over his shoulders.

While Aki is zoned out, Angel turns around to look at his window, only to realize how the probably looks right now to the other.

Angels window slides open and their eyes meet.

“Didn’t realize I moved in next to a stalker.”

Angels voice shouts from the other window.

His voice is more high pitched than expected, his voice is amused, but also calm, and his face looks blank from what Aki can see.

Aki’s cheeks warm and he stumbles over his words.

“I-I was uh.. looking at the tree! next to the house!”

Angel looks around as if trying to look for the tree in question. It’s not there. Aki is a terrible liar.

“Sure…”

Angel says finally and shuts the window again, also pulling the blinds shut.

“damnit..”

Aki curses to himself and stumbles back over to his bed. He feels like a loser! Stumbling over one sentence to a cute guy, his hair is greasy, his room stinks! He’s got to get it together for this summer!

Aki decides to stand up and walk over to the bathroom to take a shower, maybe he can start there and be less of a loser.

This summer, Aki will be better, for the cute boy next door.
