Beneath Our Secrets

Summary:

Opposites attract.
Valentine's Day of 2006, Suguru Geto casually confesses his romantic feelings for his best friend, Satoru Gojo. Everything about him was captivating. From his tall frame to his natural white locks. But what Suguru loved most were those infinitely deep blue eyes, something he could never quite fully understand. A beauty he couldn't fully appreciate. But as long as they were together, even the mysteries of the universe could be discovered, right?

Wrong.

Satoru lay in a puddle of his own blood, flies swarming his decaying corpse.
Riko was dead.
Suguru had been slashed across his chest.
Even after all was said and done, nothing was ever the same. Suguru's clothing had begun to drape from his shoulders, his undereyes began to grow dark, and he'd spend his days alone. Yet, even when his deep depression drove him to kill 114 people, including his parents, Satoru stood by his side. He defended Suguru. But how long can a love doomed to fail last? What goes up must come down. Everything must come to an end at some point

Chapter Text

The date is February, 14, 2006, 3:12 PM. The day young souls face their fears and confess their love. The day pre-existing couples buy chocolates in bulk for one another. And on that day, a daring, brave Suguru Getou had a fantastic idea. His best friend, the strongest sorcerer alive, Satoru Gojo, had always caught his eye. Pale skin like a blank sheet of paper, white, purple-toned locks that cascade down to his ears, and lastly, those infinitely ongoing blue eyes. They were fascinating to Suguru. The way, no matter how long he stared, they just kept extending onward. The way the blue irises could tint from aquamarine in the sunrise mornings, to violet in the sunset evenings. The way he couldn't look into them for too long, or he'd feel as if he were being pulled in. It was just as terrifying as it was beautiful.

The two sat across from one another, still in their school uniforms after a long day. Every time a woman squealed in excitement from receiving flowers, Suguru's head turned to watch. Seeing the same sight all day was exhausting in its own way. But maybe that was just his jealousy speaking, because occasionally, he'd see two boys holding one another's hands as they walked along the streets of Tokyo. That really got him thinking, 'How do you distinguish love from friendship?'

His thick thumbs tap at his keypad, curiosity through his bones. 'Signs of love,' he searches.

Before his eyes is a checklist:
Natural closeness - Becoming touchy with that person more than others
Constant eye contact - Extended eye contact with that person
Sharing experiences - Being excited to talk to them about mundane things

Check..
Check..
Check..

Perhaps... Love is what he was feeling? He'd always found himself seeking Satoru's hand in his own, or enjoying when Satoru would play in his hair. He loved looking into Satoru's eyes; somehow, he could do it for hours at times, but not last a second at others. He and Satoru always shared everything, from their thoughts to their food to their deep secrets. He'd just interpreted it as a close friendship, nothing more, nothing less. Well, if love and friendship overlap so much, why wouldn't they just date? Yeah. It makes sense. If anything, it would make their teamwork even better.

Suguru slides his phone in his pocket, standing abruptly, hands stuffed in his pockets, "I'll be back, Satoru."

Satoru nods without a second thought, his cheeks stuffed full with rice, grains sticking to his lips.

Satoru noticed everything, though. Suguru was acting strangely. Usually, he'd be chatty, more charismatic. Yet today, he was being so observant. He'd barely spoken to Satoru all day. Well, there's probably nothing to fuss over. After all, we are the strongest.

...

But worry only stirred when fifteen minutes passed, then thirty, then an hour. Where the hell is he? What could he be doing for a whole hour, especially without telling him? His stomach rumbled with anxiety. Did a curse attack Suguru? What if he got himself into trouble? Could Satoru make it in time to help him? Had he had too much to eat, or did the idea of Suguru never coming back shake him to the core? Perhaps that was something only Satoru could know. When the clock hit 4:30 PM, Satoru stood impatiently. He began to march around the small table for two, his hands deep in his pockets and a pout to his lips. Suguru would never let himself be caught off guard. Was he sneak-attacked? Ambushed? Kidnapped? All three? His knees shook at the thought. He'd made up his mind; he'd kill anyone who dared hurt Suguru. He slams yen bills on the table, turning to leave the restaurant in a hurry.

'I'm the only one who's allowed to kill Sugur-'

"I took a bit long. My bad, Satoru."
Suguru's raspy voice rings through Satoru's ears, his shoulders dropping with the released tension. Suguru was alive. But what could've taken him so damn long? Satoru's eyes glance over the man in front of him with suspicion until they land on the bouquet in his arms.

"What's that for?"

"For you, idiot. Be my boyfriend, alright?"

...

"What?"
Satoru's eyebrows raise. That was the last thing he expected.

This guy really went on a shopping spree for Valentine's Day gifts, probably spent all his money, and took an hour out of the day to do so, for... him? Satoru Gojo? The same idiot who was ready to commit murder after Suguru had been gone for an hour? The same Satoru Gojo that had the rarest and strongest jujutsu techniques, but would trip over a rock and faceplant? He wasn't just stupid, he was an imbecile. Someone only an idiot could love. But Suguru wasn't an idiot. He was the complete opposite. He always thought everything out perfectly; he never acted purely on emotion. So.. What the hell is this?

Suguru speaks, his voice calm as if he were making an order for food, "I said, be my boyfriend. I'm in love with you, so this is the next step, isn't it?"

Satoru was in disbelief. He knew Suguru was a very straight-up person, but he never expected to be demanded, not asked, to be his boyfriend. Also, what is this love stuff he's talking about?

"Suguru I- Did you seriously leave for an hour just to get me flowers?"
His mouth is slightly agape, but the love confession wasn't something he was worried about. If anything, he felt the same. He'd always admired Suguru. His smile, the way his eyebrows curled when he laughed, his long hair glistening with the sunlight. Anyone would fall for him. Usually, Satoru would come up with some dumb line for a situation like this, but now, all he could do was stand straight, staring into Suguru's violet eyes.

"Well, isn't this usually how people confess their feelings?"

Satoru could only laugh at the situation. Not only did Suguru leave for an hour without a word, but he also spent that hour shopping through Tokyo to get a Valentine's Day gift for Satoru? That's hilarious. He could only think back to their times together. Riding on a shared bike as his arms wrapped around Suguru from behind, staying up for hours through the night just to talk on the phone, getting yelled at by Yaga together. Satoru had always known Suguru was precious to him, but this solidified it. What he felt wasn't friendship; it was love, romantic love. The kind of love that kept people up at night thinking about that person. The kind of love that makes people act stupidly just for the sake of that person. The kind of love that meant you could spend your entire life with someone, only for it to feel like it passed in the blink of an eye.

"Satoru? Well? You gonna answer me or keep me hanging?"
He extends his arm, offering the bouquet, a mixture of beautiful pink camellias and red roses, along with a big red bag filled with chocolates and teddy bears.

...

"You know, you really suck at this confessing stuff."

"How so? People online said to be straightforward with your feelings and express them through gifts, so I did."
Suguru sounded almost offended, rolling his eyes.

"Maybe you should stop listening to people online."
Satoru laughs, accepting the flowers and bag, acting casually as he holds them with utmost care.

...

"Of course, I'll be your boyfriend. Next time, let's skip the hour shopping spree in Tokyo, though."
He smiles, confidently reaching to grab Suguru's hand, holding it in his own. As his eyes looked at Suguru's, it all felt so real. They were finally together.

Suguru's expression changed, his eyebrows softening as his lips curled into a gentle smile, "I guess I'll keep that in mind."

"By the way, I'm definitely telling Shoko about this."
Satoru's smile grows with Suguru's.

"Don't. I'll never hear the end of it."
