He was happy now, John B reminded himself. Happy and safe and better. That's the word everyone kept using for him. Teachers and parents and cashiers would whisper towards John B when his friend wasn’t listening: “Oh he just looks so much better!” they would say, eyes softening as they looked at the blonde. John B couldn’t help but feel his stomach tighten at those words. He had thought, all those months ago, before the long sleeves and the therapies and the tears that JJ was getting better, getting out of his slump, and then he had found him.
