Hare-Raising Tale

Summary:

Mike leaned down, and Will hopped into his arms. Cradling him, Mike straightened back up. Tentatively, he placed one hand on Will’s back, his palm sinking into his fur.
“Well, we’ll go to the library and see what we can find,” Dustin said. “This is just physics, right? Matter can be rearranged in space, or changed in form? He’s just…rearranged.”
Jonathan sighed. “Please do not use the word ‘rearranged’ to describe my brother.”

Will somehow gets changed into a rabbit. Mike volunteers to take care of him. Only problem is, Mike can't stop petting Will. Or telling him he's cute.

Notes:

first up: I graduated college! I have an english degree now! this is probably going to be the only thing I use it for bc I'm going to grad school for something completely different!

this is just a short fluffy one-shot that's not meant to be taken super seriously, so if it's ooc or rushed thats why, i literally wrote this in two days for fun. It's based off of some fan art by @amberstruck on ig, which in turn was based off of a twitter SMAU by @mindgayah! however i don’t have twitter and have not read the au so any resemblance between my story and the SMAU is entirely coincidental.

Work Text:

Mike was ready for the best Saturday night of his life.

Joyce and Hopper had gone out of town for the weekend on a “couple’s retreat” (Will had furiously grimaced when he told Mike about their plans) and as a result, Jonathan, Will, and El would have the entire house to themselves. Of course, being nerds, they weren’t going to be throwing any ragers. Instead, they had $25 dollars for pizza and candy, all three Star Wars movies rented, and no one to tell them to go to bed.

Mike wasn’t supposed to head over until after noon, so it was a rude awakening when the walkie-talkie crackled to life at EIGHT IN THE MORNING. On a SATURDAY.

Mike groaned. Still keeping his head buried in his pillow, he blindly feeled around his dresser for the walkie, only to knock it onto the ground. Oh, come on.

Reluctantly, he rolled over and leaned towards the floor, grabbing the walkie and pressing the intercom. “Can this please wait until later?”

El’s voice crackled back. “It is-well, it is not a ‘code red’. It is a code—I do not even know?”

Jonathan’s voice chimed in. “Yeah, you guys just have to come see this for yourself.”

Mike paused, waiting for Will’s voice to come over the airwaves and tell him that everything was fine, that his siblings were just overreacting. But his calm voice didn’t enter the conversation at all.

Mike’s heart began to race. He’s not there. Something happend.

Panicked, he pressed the button so hard the metal indendeted into his finger. “Will. What happened to him? Is he ok?”

“How do you know it has something to do with Will?” Dustin said, having joined the conversation.

“He’s not talking. He would have talked by now. Where is he?” Mike said, his voice blurring into one incoherent ramble.

“Mike, hey, calm down,” Jonathan said. “Will’s right here. He’s, well, he’s not doing bad—”

“He is not in danger,” El said. “He just cannot speak right now. You just need to come over, as soon as you can.”

You didn’t have to tell Mike twice. Wide awake, he jumped out of bed, threw on clothes, and raced down to the garage to grab his bike. Even though El said Will wasn’t in danger, Mike wasn’t convinced. He still remembered the terror he first felt as a kid when WIll disappeared, when his fake body was pulled out of the lake. All the recurring jolts of fear everytime some horrifying new disaster happened to Will. being posessed by the mind Flayer, taunted by Vecna, overdoing his powers to the point he nearly died.

All of that was in the past. It had been over a year since they killed Vecna and stopped the Mind Flayer for good. Will had been fine since. But something had happened. Mike needed to make sure he got there in time.

—----

“What am I looking at?” Dustin said.

“Is this a prank? Weird ass prank, guys”, Max said.

The rest of the Party all arrived at the Byers-Hopper house around the same time, quickly ushered in by Jonathan before they could get a word in. “He’s upstairs,” he said. “But prepare yourself. It’s pretty…weird.”

“Like what type of weird?” Max had said. “Upside Down Weird, or—”

“Honestly, I don’t even know. Just go look.”

So they did. The Party crowded in Will’s room, looking at the small brown rabbit that had appeared on Will’s bed.

It was about the size of a football, with soft chestnut brown fur, ears that flopped down instead of standing up, and a rapidly twitching nose. The rabbit’s expression was unreadable, but it sat calmly on the bed.

“Ok, this isn’t funny,” Mike said. “Where is Will?”

El pointed at the bunny wordlessly.

“You’re telling us that that rabbit is Will?” said Lucas.

“Yes,” El said again, her tone inflected with frustration.

“Can you, like, prove it?” Max asked.

“Ask him,” El said.

“Oh my God, this is so stupid, I'm not asking a rabbit if he’s our friend or not—”

Lucas interrupted his girlfriend. “Will, is that you?”

The rabbit nodded.

“That doesn’t mean anything,” Max said, still not convinced.

“I don’t know, Max”, said Dustin. “I mean, his fur is the same color as Will’s hair, and the eyes are the same.”

Indeed, the rabbit had the same olive eyes as Will, flecks of brown nestled between the green.

“And his nose twitches a lot. Will does the same thing,” Lucas said.

Max sighed and sat down in Will’s desk chair. “Ok, let’s say I humor you and this rabbit is actually Will. Why would he be a rabbit in the first place?”

El shrugged. “I do not know. I woke up and went to see him, but I found this rabbit in his place. Considering there is no other way for a rabbit to get into his room, I just assumed that something had happened and he was the rabbit. So I went into his mind-”

“I thought you didn’t do that anymore?” said Lucas.

“I made an exception, since my brother currently cannot talk,” El said, “and it was him. He does not know how this happened either. He just woke up like this.” The rabbit-Will-nodded in agreement.

“Holy shit, this is crazy,” Dustin said, putting his hands up to the side of his hand. “Is it the Upside Down? Some sort of weird Vecna shit?”

El shook her head. “I do not feel anything. It just seems like…some sort of weird fluke.”

“I don’t think it’s that weird,” said Lucas. “Not any weirder than alternate dimensions and monsters made of exploded corpses, right?”

“Mike, how are you doing?” asked Jonathan. “You’ve been very quiet during this.”

Mike hadn’t said a word since laying eyes on this Will-rabbit-thing that was sitting very still and looking right at him. He had known it was Will the second he saw him—like Dustin said, the fur was the same. So was his eyes. But looking at the rabbit, it just seemed so unmistakably Will

“It’s him,” Mike said at last. “Somehow, someway…that’s Will.”

“Well, if Mike says it, then I’m convinced,” said Max. “Didn’t you guys tell me once that he recognized Will’s breathing?”

Mike couldn’t tell if she was being sarcastic or not, but he would take what he could get.

“So, what now?” asked Dustin.

Jonathan ran a hand through his floppy hair. “Well, Mom and Hopper don’t get back until tomorrow night, so hopefully he’ll be normal then?”

“And if he’s not?” asked Max.

“Then we deal with it,” said El. “We have dealt with worse.”

“I can take him,” Mike blurted out. The Party turned to look at him.

“Take him where?” Jonathan said, raising an eyebrow.

“To my house. I can keep an eye on him while you guys—I don’t know, go do research or something. We can still have our sleepover.”

“Weren’t we all invited to that sleepover?” Max said.

“Why can’t he just stay here, at his house?” Jonathan said. “He’s probably freaking out right now.”

The Party all looked down at Will, still sitting still on his bed, his expression very neutral.

“I think if Mike wants to watch Will, he can,” El said, a small smile forming on her face. “He is very protective. When he wants to be.”

She was shooting him a look, but Mike couldn’t figure out what it meant. But she wasn’t arguing with him, and that was good. Granted, they hadn’t argued since they had broken up back during sophomore year.

“Yeah, I’m protective,” he said, standing up straighter. “Plus my parents don’t pay attention to anything. They’ll never even notice he was there.”

“Maybe we should ask Will what he wants?” Max said. “He’s right there.”

“Fine,” Mike said. “Will, do you want to come with me to my house while the others figure out what happened, or do you want to stay here?”

Will hopped over to where Mike was standing, towards the edge of the bed.

“Looks like he made his decision,” Mike said, as Jonathan glared at him.

“Alright,” Jonathan said. “But if anything happens to him—”

“It won’t!”

“You are telling our Mom and Hopper what happened, and you are taking full responsibility."

The full weight of Jonathan’s threat weighed down on Mike’s shoulders. Joyce was very overprotective, but the thought of what Hopper would do if something happened to his almost-step-son? Considering all the times Hopper threatened to hurt Mike when he was dating his daughter?

Mike gulped. “He’ll be ok. Right, Will?”

He leaned down, and Will hopped into his arms. Cradling him, Mike straightened back up. Tentatively, he placed one hand on Will’s back, his palm sinking into his fur. Ohmygodhe’ssosoft.

“Well, we’ll go to the library and see what we can find,” Dustin said. “This is just physics, right? Matter can be rearranged in space, or changed in form? He’s just…rearranged.”

Jonathan sighed. “Please do not use the word ‘rearranged’ to describe my brother.”

Mike wasn’t listening. He softly petted Will, his best friend sitting contently in his arms. He didn’t weigh anything—maybe two pounds? Will had always been small. It would make sense the one time he gets changed into an animal magically, he would still be small.

He’s just as cute as a rabbit as he is normally, Mike thought. Then paused. Normally?

—--

After a very stressful thirty minutes, Mike finally got Will home.

He wasn’t sure how exactly to transport his best friend-turned-bunny back. He didn’t think a rabbit could ride on his bike. El offered him a tote bag, but he didn’t want to have him jostling around.

Finally, he settled for placing Will in the bag, and just walking back, apologizing the whole way. He kept one hand cradled on the bottom of the bag, making sure Will didn’t move around too much. Will didn’t seem to mind. He just sat quietly in the bottom of the bag.

Mike threw open the doors to his home, hoping to get to his room as quickly as possible. But of course, because the universe loves to torment Michael Wheeler, his mom was in the kitchen.

“There you are, sweetie!” she said, as she scrubbed some dishes. “Where were you?”

“Uh,” Mike stammered, “At Will’s.”

“I thought you weren’t going over there until later?”

“We had to cancel, Will wasn’t feeling good. I brought him some comic books to read,” he lied, very impressed by how quickly he came up with it on the spot.

“What’s in that bag?” she asked, turning to face him.

“Uh, I used it for the comics.”

“It still looks like there’s something in there.”

“Nope! Nothing in there! Going to my room now,” he said quickly, and then turned and ran up the stairs.

Finally, he got into his room. Locking the door, he turned the bag on its side so Will could hop out.

“Phew,” he exhaled. “That was close.”

Now that it was just the two of them, Mike realized he didn’t think that far ahead about what to do next. He didn’t even know how to care for rabbits. He was pretty sure they were different than humans. He probably couldn’t feed Will some reeses pieces and call it a day. Right?

Will stood up on his hind legs, nose twitching.

“I know, I’m trying to think,” Mike said.

Will was really cute. Again, Mike wasn’t sure what his brain meant earlier by saying he looked as cute as he was normally. Because Will normally wasn’t cute as a human. Sure, his hair would sometimes flop into his eyes and Mike would stare like a maniac everytime he watched Will push it out of his face. And his eyes got really wide when he got really excited about something. And his teeth were buck-toothed, just like a rabbits. And his nose would scrunch up too, just like a rabbit. Man, Will is really bunny like as a human. Makes sense.

Will sat back down, making a chirping noise at Mike’s direction. Mike shook the thoughts of human-Will definitely not being cute out of his head and sat down on his floor, trying to make himself seem less imposing to the small creature. “Yeah, I didn’t really think that far ahead when I said I’d watch you. I just didn’t want El and Jonathan to worry about you on top of figuring out what happened.”

And I just want to spend time with you. No matter what shape you’re in.

Will lifted one leg to scratch at his adorably floppy ears. Mike chuckled. ‘We’ll have to make sure Holly doesn’t see you. She’ll want to dress you up or something.” Then he remembered. “Wait, Holly has a book about rabbits! At the very least we can figure out what you can eat.”

Will made another chirping noise, but Mike was already heading towards the door. “Uh, stay here, ok?”

Will narrowed his eyes at Mike, and Mike knew exactly what he wanted to say. Duh.

Thankfully, Holly was at dance class, so Mike was able to grab the book without interruption. Locking his door again, he sat down against his bed. Will hopped over, jumping straight into Mike’s lap. Mike flinched.

“You don’t want to sit next to me?”

Will stretched out in Mike’s lap, chirping contendily.

Mike opened the book and began to read, holding up the book so Will could see. Mike wasn’t sure if rabbits could read, but he figured Will could at least look at the pictures.

According to the book, Will was a Holland Lop rabbit. They were one of the smallest types of rabbits, which made sense considering Will was always a little smaller anyway. They were apparently prone to chewing on furniture (“I think I can trust you not to chew on my bed, though”) and required chewing toys. They would needed a lot of hay and pellets to eat (Will chuffed at this, to which Mike replied “obviously i’m not going to make you eat rabbit pellets, I don’t even know where I would get them—) so fruits and vegetables would have to do. Their teeth and nails would need to be trimmed by a vet, but hopefully Will wouldn’t be a rabbit that long to worry about that.

Figuring Will had gone long enough without food, Mike snuck downstairs to the kitchen and grabbed some stuff from the fridge—lettuce, carrots, apple slices. He placed it on the floor in front of Will, who ate it happily, making little crunching noises.

“You’re pretty cute like this, you know.” Mike reached out and stroked his head before he could think about it. Will jolted up in surprise.

Shit. that was a weird thing to do. He’s still my best friend. You don’t really go around petting your best friend, right?

“Sorry, Will, I didn’t think—”

Will hopped over and put his paws on Mike’s knee, butting his head into Mike’s had. More, he seemed to say.

Still nervous, Mike reached out with one finger, running it along Will’s velvet-soft ears. Will didn’t jolt away that time. Just stayed there and let Mike do it.

They spent the rest of the afternoon like that, Will sitting quietly while Mike stroked him. Will seemed to like getting his ears scratched the most. He nipped at Mike when he tried to touch his little cottontail (but it’s the cutest part of you!) At one point, Will rolled over onto his back so Mike could rub his belly like the world’s smallest dog. Throughout it all, Mike couldn’t stop talking about Will and how cute he was, which should embarrass him, but it didn’t. It’s Will. Of course he would be cute. He was a good-looking guy! (Mike told him that.)

As kids, Mike and Will were very touchy. They would walk around holding hands on the playground, hug for minutes at a time, share beds during sleepovers. It never seemed weird to them. They were just so comfortable around each other.

But once they got to second grade, they learned two boys touching was weird. Snide comments from both their dads (“It’s not appropriate, Michael”) and playground teasings caused them to drop their habits. Mike always missed it though. He missed how calm touching Will made him feel. The little bubbles he would get in his chest every time their hands would accidentally brush or when their shoes would touch under the table. He still hugged Will occasionally—when he first came back from the Upside Down, the moment he got his powers and killed three demos with his mind—but they were few and far between.

As a rabbit though, Mike could touch Will all he wanted, and no one could think it was weird. It was just like they were kids again, before everyone told them who they were supposed to be.

—----

The evening rolled around. When his mom called him for dinner, Mike shoveled food into his mouth at a record pace and ran back upstairs to Will, who was standing on his hind legs again, pointing his head towards Mike’s dresser.

“What’s going on?” he asked, before the walkie crackled to life. “Mike? You there?” Dustin's voice said.

Mike grabbed the walkie and sat back down, Will hopping into his lap like earlier. “Yeah, Will’s here too.”

Finally. I’ve been calling for ten minutes.”

“Had to eat dinner,” he said. “Find anything?”

Jonathan’s voice joined in next. “We spent the entire day at the library. We’ve got some theories on what happened—”

“He got rearranged—”

“Dustin, I told you to stop referring to my brother as rearranged—”

“What do you think happened?” Mike interrupted to stop their argument.

El chimed in after that. “We think it’s something related to Will’s powers.”

“But they disappeared, right?” Mike looked down at Will, who had suddenly gone suspiciously still.

“Well, the Upside Down was constructed from dark matter, right? So it makes sense Will’s powers would be related to the matter too. And what did I say about matter earlier? It can be rearranged.” Dustin said now.

“So what does that mean, exactly?” Mike said.

“There’s still some dark matter in Will, and something triggered it to rearrange him. Rabbits and humans are both carbon-based. Theoretically, anything that’s carbon-based can be turned into something carbon-based.”

“I don’t understand it either,” Max said now. “But Dustin thinks that Will will probably go back to normal on his one. That this is just some weird fluke of physics.”

Mike should have been relieved at that, but part of him wished Will could stay a rabbit. That he could keep cuddling and petting him without it being weird.

“But what if he’s wrong?” Mike asked.

“I don’t think I am—”

“Well, if he is,” Max interrupted Dustin. “I looked at mythology stuff. Apparently rabbits are symbols of sexuality.”

Both Mike and Will froze. Max’s voice cracked over the airwaves. “Oh, Will, I wish you could talk right now so you could tell me how hard Mike is blushing.”

“I’m—I’m not blushing!” Mike lied.

“Sure you aren’t, Wheeler.”

Anyway,” Jonathan said. “I think we should all go to bed and hopefully Will will be normal in the morning, because I do not want to explain this to Mom.”

They all said their goodnights and hung up. Mike brushed his teeth and changed in his bathroom (He didn’t really want to get dressed in front of Will. the thought of that made him nervous, even though they’d changed in front of each other before). Returning to his room, he grabbed a few blankets and pillows off his bed and put them on the floor. Holly’s book had said that rabbits liked to nest, and he wanted to make sure Will was as comfortable as possible.

But Will didn’t go towards the nest. He remained seated.

“Come on, Will, I'm tired.”

Will stood on his hind legs, pawing at Mike’s bed.

Mike sighed. “You want my bed? I’m not sleeping on the floor.”

Will shot him a look. Even as a rabbit, he was still good at that.

“Fine. We'll share the bed.”

He picked up Will and put him at the edge of his bed, sliding under the covers. He expected Will to stay perched at the bottom like a little dog, but instead Will hopped back up right onto Mike’s chest, nestling his head right under Mike’s chin.

Mike stopped breathing. Sure, he had been cuddling and petting Will all day. But snuggling? Wasn’t that too far?

“Will,” Mike whispered. “You need to move. I don’t want to crush you.”

Will only stretched out further.

“You’re really stubborn as a bunny, you know.”

Will chirped softly.

Mike leaned his head back onto his pillow. It’s fine. He can’t say no to Will. Especially since he was, you know, a rabbit. Also, Mike didn’t really mind the idea of Will snuggling with him. He was like the softest stuffed animal ever.

He started stroking Will, watching as his ears drooped lower and his eyes closed. Eventually, Mike fell asleep too.

—--

Mike awoke to a large fluffy weight on his chest. Panicking, he thrashed around before remembering his best friend of ten years was turned into a rabbit and perched asleep on top of him. Oh yeah.

Will blinked his eyes awake as well. Mike reached up to pet him. “Sorry, Will. didn’t mean to wake you up. I forgot you weren’t human and wondered what was on top of me.”

Will chuffed, almost like he was trying to laugh.

“Don’t make fun of me, I was half asleep.”

Will only nestled in further.

Mike turned his head slightly, careful not to disturb Will. The clock read 7:00 am. “Guess we can stay here a bit longer,” he said.

He leaned forward and buried his face into Will’s fur. Even as a rabbit, he still smelled good. Mike could catch hints of his lavender shampoo woven into the fluff. I hope he stays like this forever.

Mike planted a kiss right in the center of Will’s fluffy head, between his floppy ears. His fur was oh-so-soft beneath his lips.

Will chirped, a different one than the noises he had been making for the past twenty-four hours. Panicked, Mike pulled back.

“Oh my God, Will, I’m so sorry, that was so—I don’t even know why I did that, it was weird—”

But then Will began to change, his form lengthening. His floppy ears shrunk back up into regular ears, the fur pushing back into his follicles. It only took thirty seconds before Will was his usual self, all 100 and 30 pounds of it.

“Hi,” Will said, smiling. His bunny-teeth bucked out.

“Will,” Mike choked out. “You’re crushing me.”

Will’s eyes widened. He rolled off of Mike and flopped beside him on the bed. Pushing his hair out of his eyes, he met Mike’s face. “Sorry about that.”

Mike sat up. “You’re back.”

“Yeah,” he said. “I am.”

Thankfully, Will was clothed, wearing the oversized cure shirt and yellow plaid boxers he must have fallen asleep in.

“Do you know what happened?” Mike asked.

Will stiffened. “Uh—”

“Because El and Dustin seemed to think it was related to your powers, which you would tell us if you still had them, right?”

Will froze, very rabbit-like.

Will.

Will sighed. “Not like, what they used to be!”

“How long?”

He shrugged. “Three months?”

“And you didn’t tell us?”

“I wanted to get the hang of it?”

Mike shook his head. “Wait, what do you mean, ‘not like they used to be?”

Will reached over to Mike’s dresser and pulled out a small rubber ball. “Dustin was kind of right when he was talking about the dark matter. Everything’s all made of the same things, just, rearranged.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word ‘rearranged’ as much as I have the last twenty-four hours.”

“So I think I still have a connection to the dark matter, and I can use it to reshape things. Watch.”

He rolled the ball around in his hand, brows furrowed. Mike watched as the ball wriggled, then melted, then reformed into a rubber dinosaur this time.

“Woah.”

“I started with smaller objects, and then I wanted to see if I could do living things—plants to bugs and vice-versa. Like Dustin said, anything made of carbon can become something carbon.”

“And you turned yourself into a bunny?”

Will’s nose twitched. “Not on purpose! I wanted to see if I could…well…alter my appearance a little. I wanted to look cooler. Nothing happened, so I thought it didn’t work, but then I woke up and I was a rabbit.”

“Why would you want to look cooler? You already look—” Mike stopped himself. He was about to say cute. He was really thinking that about every version of Will a lot, right? “Good.”

Will sighed. “I wanted to impress-well, it doesn’t really matter.”

Mike playfully shoved him. “Yes it does! Is it a guy you like?”

Will blushed.

“What’s his name?”

Will shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. He wouldn’t like me anyway. I think he’s straight. I just wanted to have him think I was cool.”

“Will, you’re plenty cool! You can literally change things into other things. That’s like, X-Men shit.” he smiled. “I like that you’re still a sorcerer.”

Will groaned. “Again with the sorcerer thing—”

“I think it fits you!”

Will smiled.

“Wait, why a bunny, anyway?” Mike asked.

Will shrugged again. “I don’t know. My mom used to call me that when I was a little kid, because of my teeth and my nose twitches a lot. But then my dad said it wasn’t a good nickname. Said it would ‘turn me queer’.” Will frowned. “I miss when she called me that.”

“I could call you that,” Mike said. “Bunny.”

Will stiffened. “Wouldn’t it be weird?”

“I just spent the last twenty-four hours petting and snuggling you. I think it’s less weird than that.”

“I liked the attention! It made me feel safe! Being a rabbit was very terrifying, you know. Everything was so big and loud.”

“Do you want me to call you bunny or not?”

Will softened. “Yeah. Yeah, I’d like that. But just us.”

Mike nodded. “Can do.”

Will rolled his head back into Mike, not nestling like when he was a rabbit, but still snuggling. “So, are we going to talk about how you kept calling me ‘cute’?”

Mike blushed. “Uh, I was hoping you wouldn’t remember that.”

“You called me ‘cute’ like every five minutes, Mike. it was all ‘aww, you’re so cute’ or ‘you’re so soft’.”

Mike reached for a spare pillow and shoved it into his face. “You were a bunny! Bunnies are cute!”

“You literally said ‘you’re cute as a boy too, you’re just cuter as a bunny’”.

Mike’s blood ran cold. That was just something that slipped out. He was really hoping Will didn’t hear that. Because that was a weird thing to say to your friend.

“I’m sorry,” Mike said quietly. “I said a lot of things when you were a bunny, I didn’t really have a filter—”

“Do you, though?” Will asked. “Think i’m cute as a boy.”

Mike peeled the pillow off of his face and rolled over to face Will. Will, with his floppy chestnut hair, and pretty green eyes, and twitchy nose, and buck teeth, and the little mole above his pale pink lips. Will, who always fit into his shirts a little too tight, and liked to curl up on the couch whenever the Party had movie night. Will, who was perfect in any shape or form he took. In any universe.

“Yeah,” Mike said finally. “I think you’re the cutest boy I've ever seen.”

Before he knew it, a pair of lips were on his. Soft lips, tasting faintly of carrots and apples. Mike only had a minute to register what was happened before Will pulled away.

Will kissed me. Will kissed ME.

Will turned red. “Oh, fuck, sorry—”

“I kissed you earlier!”

“Yeah, on my head! As a rabbit!”

Will was starting to freak out now. Mike leaned up and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. “Will, hey, it’s okay. Let’s just, call it even, okay?”

Will exhaled. “Yeah, okay. Even.”

The two boys sat upright in Mike’s bed, face to face with each other. A moment passed. Then, they leaned in again.

Kissing harder this time, Will pushed Mike down onto the bed, flopping back on top of him like he did as a rabbit. Cupping Mike’s cheeks and sinking his fingers into the back of his curls, Mike wrapped his arms around Will’s back, stroking his spine.

Mike didn’t stop to think if that was weird, like he had been with all of his recent interactions with Will. this felt right.

After a while, Will pulled off of Mike and fell back next to him. Still with the ghost of Will on his lips, a hundred puzzle pieces assembled themselves into a full picture. Oh.

“That’s why!” Mike blurted out. “Why I kept thinking you were cute, and why I want to touch you all the time, and why I freak out every time I think something happens to you. I like you.”

Will laughed. “I would hope so, otherwise this would be really awkward.”

Mike didn’t know how he could be this oblivious. He liked Will.

“Wait. What about the guy you were trying to impress?”

Will laughed again, laying his head on Mike’s chest. “You, you idiot.”

“Me? Wait, you already knew you liked me?

Will nodded.

“For how long?”

“That’s a story for another day.”

“Fineeee”. He started running his hands through Will’s hair, playing with the brown strands. “Why were you trying to impress me?”

Will sighed. “I don’t know, sometimes I just worry I’m not cool enough. And I think about when we drifted apart back in freshman year, and I didn’t want that to happen again. So I thought if I looked cooler, I could make sure you’d at least stay my friend.”

“Will. you are the coolest person i’ve ever met, powers or no powers. You are the best artist I've ever met, and you know the most about Star Wars out of any of us, and again, you are really cute.”

He kissed the top of Will’s head. “I liked you when you were a rabbit. I like you when you’re a sorcerer. But I like you like this most of all. When you’re Will. just Will. My bunny.”

Notes:

don't know how I feel about the ending but again this is a crack fic for fun so we're rolling with it!

Edit: it has been brought to my attention that someone left a rude comment on another bunny Will fic claiming they plagiarized me. I would like to say again that this is based off of a Twitter SMAU and fanart, so there are going to be similar fics and I’m not bothered by it!! And please don’t harass other writers!!!

Edit again: WOW this silly little crack fic popped off, it’s now my most kudosed fic which is really neat??? So uh good news I’m writing a sequel!!! It’ll be out after I finish my current longfic “Used to Be One of The Rotten Ones (And I Liked You For That)” which you should also check out but yeah. The people yearn for more magical gay escapades.
