Work Text:
Once in a blue moon, on a lazy, uneventful weekend, she returns. The destroyer of personal space. The angel of death.
She doesn't abide by logic. She doesn't appeal to reason. She shows no sympathy, no understanding, and no mercy. Kaito and Shuichi have a name for her: Clingy Maki.
One Sunday morning, Kaito woke up with her arms wrapped around his chest and face pressed into his back.
He didn't move. She probably fell asleep wrapped around him, and he didn't want to wake her up. And besides, the way she clung onto him felt too good. She was like a koala bear on a tree branch. Being held that tightly was enough to relax him.
"Mmmm," he heard behind him. "Don't get up."
"I won't," he said. "How long have you been awake?"
"Since half an hour ago," Maki said. "But I wanted to hold you." Even when her words were warm, she sounded as cold as ice.
"How long are you planning on doing that?"
"Until I don't want to anymore."
"And how long's that gonna take?"
"Days. Months, maybe."
"Come on, Maki Roll," Kaito said. "Let's get out of bed."
"Don't gooooooo," Maki pleaded. She wrapped her arms around his collarbone and burrowed her face into the side of his neck. "Stay with me."
Kaito felt Maki's face melt into his shoulders, and his muscles began to relax. It was too late. The predator had caught her prey. He took her arms off, rolled over on the bed to face her, and hugged her back.
"Alright," he said. "You win."
"Yaaaaaaay," Maki said, in a drowsy monotone. She held onto him tight, as if any attempt to loosen her grip on him would mean losing him forever. Oh no, Kaito thought. She's back.
---
Shuichi didn't need to be told anything to realize what was happening. Maki's disheveled hair? Kaito's groggy but enlightened face? Both of them getting up an hour late? Clingy Maki was back, and he was next. He could see her already scanning him for weaknesses, waiting for the moment to strike. It wasn't a question of if, but when. Shuichi decided he wouldn't fight it.
It happened in the middle of the afternoon. Shuichi was lying on the couch sideways reading when she suddenly hopped on, crawled over to him, and ducked her head under his book so they were face-to-face.
"What are you reading?"
"Death on the Nile," Shuichi said.
"Sounds stupid. Stupid name. You should stop reading and pay attention to me."
"Alright." Shuichi put the book down and looked at her. "Now what?"
"Cuddle," Maki said.
"Cuddle, or...?"
"Or die."
"Well, when you put it like that..." Shuichi held his arms wide open. Maki accepted it with grace, flopping into his chest as his back slid them down the arm of the couch.
"Pet my hair," Maki said.
Shuichi started to brush his fingers through her hair. "I like how forward this you is," he said.
"Don't know what you're talking about," Maki said. "I'm always like this."
They laid like that in serenity for a while. Shuichi's brushes became more adventurous, and he dipped his fingers deeper to caress the roots of Maki's hair. She made a warm purr from the bottom of her throat and nestled her head deeper into his chest. He tried not to say anything.
It was only after about fifteen more minutes of this that Shuichi realized that Maki had fallen asleep on top of him. Her face had that permanent resting scowl, but in it was a look of satisfaction. Shuichi didn't want to wake her up, so he laid there with her. Soon, he drifted off, too. They stayed like that until Kaito woke them for dinner.
---
She came back one last time at the end of the day, when Shuichi and Kaito were laying in bed.
"You know what'd be funny?" Kaito said. "If Maki got out of the shower and saw us cuddling together, already asleep."
Shuichi snickered at the thought. "She'd probably kill us."
"With hugs!"
"Yeah, she'd smother us to death."
"I wouldn't mind that," Kaito said. "Especially if it's with you two." He pulled Shuichi over so they were face-to-face, and pinched his cheeks. "You're so cute."
"Jeez," he said. "When did I fall in love with such... handsy people?"
"We were always like this," Kaito said. "You knew what you were signing up for."
Shuichi leaned in and caught Kaito in a kiss. Kaito kissed back harder, wrapping his arms around Shuichi's back to press his whole body into him. They got lost in the heat of the moment, moving closer and closer, when--
"Hey." Maki stood at the foot of the bed, glaring at them. "Are you two gonna make space for me?"
"Oh," Kaito said. "Hey, Maki Roll."
She hopped on the bed, crawled over, and laid down between the two, scowling.
"Do you want to cuddle some more?" Kaito said.
"No, it's fine. Since you two are so busy." She crossed her arms and pouted.
Kaito and Shuichi gave each other a look, then buried their faces into her shoulders.
"Huh? What are you two--"
"We're getting revenge," Kaito said. He nuzzled his head into her neck.
"Yeah," Shuichi said. "You think you can just use us whenever you want, and not give us the opportunity to get you back?" He wrapped his arms around her. "We're spoiling you, Maki, whether you like it or not."
Maki, finally caught, tried to thrash out of their grip, but eventually relented and hugged them back.
"Alright," she said. "Just this once."
And soon, Clingy Maki, Clingy Shuichi, and Clingy Kaito drifted off to sleep.
