Day 10 - Pirate King Luffy Au
Law wasn't going to admit it, but he felt that sometimes he missed Luffy more than vice versa. He didn't think it was a bad thing, not at all. In fact, he'd be surprised if it wasn't like that; his partner was a very hyperkinetic being who was capable of getting into trouble every day of his existence, so he didn't have so much time to stop to think and miss those who weren't with him.
Law, on the other hand, could. And he did.
Particularly when he sat, reading the newspaper and saw what the wannabe pirate king had gotten himself into at that occasion.
And, yes, a lot of things were happening. Always. It didn't matter when he would consult the newspaper.

Every time he read a new headline, Law always wondered how Morgan managed to figure things out so fast. Especially the last one.
Law had returned to Wano two weeks ago.
He had already found out everything he was looking for on his own and now it was enough for him to exchange information with Robin when she learned something new about the void century. That's when he figured out what to do. There was one thing at the Wano country that gave a bad taste in the mouths of all the doctors while leaving, and that was the people of Okobore town.
Had that selfless selfishness that characterized Luffy rubbed off on him? Could it be.
For Law, the consequences of smiles were a legacy of Doflamingo. He couldn’t rest until he knew that he had erased from the face of the earth all the damage that monster had generated.
So now he was living in Kuri, examining the people who were failed fruit users. After his stay on Egghead and some conversations with Vegapunk about devil fruits, he had a few theories and techniques to try. His ultimate goal was to be able to take the fruits from people without having to kill them. He was sure he could do it even if the only way was with his own devil fruit. It could take years, though.
It was an agreement that they had reached through den den mushi. He knew Yamato planned to go with the Mugiwaras and had decided to stay behind to help Momonosuke in case any potential threats came.
So he offered to fill that role, just for his scientific interest, obviously.
Luffy teased Law for weeks through calls, saying what a good person he was.
And in his stupidity, the boy decided to return to Wano to look for Yamato, but having the nerve to tell him they wouldn’t see each other because they had agreed to meet the next time in Laugh Tale.
The audacity.
So if his crew were saying that he was in a bad mood because he hadn't been able to see his 'boyfriend' after months, having the chance to do so…
He wasn't even denying it.
But that's how time passed, each month became shorter than the previous one. He no longer had to hide, now considered as a guest of the Shogun, even though he hadn't wanted to go to the palace. He simply lived in Kuri, and while doing research and trying to maintain his tough scowl, he unspokenly became the town's doctor, using his powers to remove toxins that had adhered to the bodies of people living outside the flower capital.
So as the time passed, he also began to focus on his work and less thinking about what was happening outside of that isolated place, partly because the news coo didn’t arrive regularly.
Every week he talked to Luffy though, and found out about his adventures through his optics, to later be contrasted with Robin’s and Chopper’s.
If any of his crewmates dared to tease on how happy he looked after each call, he would cut them into little pieces, so they quickly stopped commenting on it.
Time kept passing on.
And on..
And when it was going to be a year, he received a call outside the itinerary he handled with the allied crew. His first reaction was to consult the Luffy’s vivre card he had, relaxing when he saw that it was still intact.
"We did it, Law" was what Luffy said as soon as he answered "we have the coordinates to get to Laugh Tale"
"About time" he murmured while trying to appear as casual as possible, but he knew that the snail must be imitating his smile.
"Something happened" the boy continued, somewhat nervous. That wasn’t usual.
“Who did you unintentionally declare war on now? Don't tell me you're going to face Akagami-ya?"
"No no. It's nothing like that"
"So?"
"I'll show you when we meet"
“Did you get a dumb tattoo? Or did you get someone pregnant?
"Sometimes you're just mean, Torao" his partner complained, making the surgeon's den den mushi try to imitate the broadcaster’s pout.
"Are you seriously not going to tell me?"
Silence.
Law rolled his eyes.
"Fine, show me when we meet," the doctor growled, he didn't like surprises.
He spent the entire trip thinking about what Mugiwara no Luffy would have done now, that he couldn't tell him by call.
But none of the things that crossed his mind did justice to the surprise he had kept for him.
Worst of all, he didn't reveal what it was to him until after they'd arrived at Laugh Tale.
Great, he now knew all the secrets of the world; what happened in the void century, who was Joy Boy, the role of ancient weapons, who ruled behind the shadows, the origin of devil fruits and many technologies that he had never seen.
But he couldn't enjoy any of it because of Mugiwara-ya.
It could look like a tantrum, and truthly it was. But Law hated surprises too much.
"It's not that I don't want to show you" Luffy said when they were in the surgeon's room in the new polar tang, lying next to him "I don't have it with me, we have to go somewhere else"
"Are you going to ask me to marry you?" he asked him jokingly, no longer knowing what to think what it was, resigning himself to the possibility that it was some kind of ring or something.
And Luffy laughed out loud.
HE LAUGHED.
Why did he feel so outraged?
"Why do you always think about marriage?"
"Maybe it's because my parents were married" Law reflected, letting out a sigh "fine, I'll try to be patient"
“When we arrive you will understand”
And so they spent a couple of weeks traveling after reaching the last island, avoiding the marines as much as possible, knowing that a conflict with the world government was imminent, distributing both their presence between the Polar Tang and the Sunny, Law sharing more deeply his knowledge acquired in Wano and Egghead with the other doctor.
Until they arrived at the island where Luffy's surprise was.
The boy led him through town, holding his hand, almost pulling him, clearly nervous and impatient. The inhabitants did not seem surprised or frightened by the presence of who a few days ago had been crowned as the second pirate king by the newspaper, on the contrary.
Law didn't take long to notice that this island was a territory proclaimed as part of Mugiwara no Luffy's domain, courtesy of Bartolomeo. Overhearing a conversation between two villagers, he learned it was an island that was previously under Whitebeard's protection, then passed under Kurohige's control and finally was protected by the Straw Hat fleet.
They stopped in front of a house at the end of town.
“Did you buy me a house?”
His partner stared at him for a moment, a little doubtful, then took a deep breath, linked their fingers together, and guided him inside.
"Luffy-senpai" Bartolomeo greeted him as soon as they entered, who was in the room, talking with some of his crew. Hearts were practically coming out of his eyes, Law snorted.
"Trafalgar Law" followed the green-haired man, clearly not excited.
“D. Law” he corrected before realizing what he was saying. That guy always just drove him crazy.
"Where is it?" the younger captain asked, totally ignoring the tension in the room.
"On the second floor"
As soon as he heard that, he pulled the surgeon towards him, causing them to rush up the stairs.
Seeing what was in the room, he froze.
A child, no, a baby , was sleeping peacefully in what appeared to be a crib.
Thick and long eyelashes, black hair, brown skin. The infant was wearing a sunflower pajamas.
"Luffy-ya, when I asked you if you got someone pregnant I wasn't serious" he muttered as he watched the scene, quite open-mouthed.
“I didn't get anyone pregnant, I found it after having passed through an island where I fought with some pirates who were looting the place. It was sleeping inside a chest”.
With that comment, Law realized that what it was doing as a crib was still the chest in which the creature had probably been found.
"I tried to find its parents but it didn't belong to anyone from the island, it was probably from one of the pirates that escaped or something like that"
"So let me see if I understand" Law cleared his throat "you adopted a baby”
"Yeah"
“Even though you are currently the most wanted man in the world”
"Yes, that’s why I left it here"
"First, stop referring to that creature as an object," he ordered, "second, does she have a name?"
"No"
"How long has the baby been here?"
"A month maybe?"
"And you haven't named her? How do you call her then?"
"The thing"
Law sighed, massaging his temples.
"Do you plan to keep her then?"
"So she is a girl?"
The doctor didn't even waste energy questioning how he didn't know that. He drew kikoku and performed a scan to make sure everything was in order.
“Yes, she is a one and a half year old girl”
"I couldn't leave her" Luffy muttered with his eyes downcast "I see her and I think of Uta"
“You are only twenty-one years old”
"Shanks adopted her when he was twenty"
Law sighed, sitting in the chair that was next to the "crib", noticing how the creature woke up and looked at him with giant golden eyes, which made the doctor blush.
"Are you sure that's the only reason that you couldn't leave her?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Her eyes are the same color as mine"
"Oh really?" the boy approached curiously, taking her in his arms, laughing to confirm it "it's true!"
Law rolled his eyes, he wasn't even going to ask what his subordinates had told him about her, because it was more than obvious that they accepted any craziness that came from him.
He felt a warmth in his chest as he dedicated to watching Luffy's interactions with the infant; he seemed like she liked to play with his fingers and the boy's face, and she laughed a lot. He could almost picture twenty-year-old Shanks holding a baby.
"Yamato told me that Shanks was also found in a treasure chest by Roger, when he was one year old."
Was it fate?
The figure that he could clearly imagine was Rosinante. It wasn’t the same situation. But something in all this made him think of him. He was twenty-six years old when he died. He had adopted Law at practically 25.
"Lami" he swallowed "let's call her Lami"
Luffy, who already knew that name very well, stared at him, as if he was giving him a chance to take it back.
"Lami" he said when that didn't happen, approaching his partner "this is Law"
"Daw"
The, now king of the pirates, burst out laughing when he heard that and saw how the surgeon became more blush than person.
"She's going to have a ridiculously long name" commented the younger one, fortunately focused on the girl, so he didn't see the expression on Law's face, who seemed to be the only one who was measuring the consequences of the situation.
"You're holding her wrong," he finished saying, trying to sound as neutral as possible, clearing his throat as he tried to ignore the heat in his ears, picking up the baby, who laughed as she stretched out his arms.
"She likes you" Luffy observed, smiling "aren't you going to say hi?"
Law sighed, drawing strength from where he didn't have it.
"Hello"
"How boring"
"And what do you want me to tell her?"
"I don’t know, who you are for example"
"I'm a surgeon" he finished by saying, noticing how those huge eyes were looking at him carefully "and I'm going to be one of your... caretakers, it seems" he heard Luffy chuckle as he spoke "I come from a family of doctors, I like cursed swords and hopefully you are going to be a surgeon too"
"No, she's going to be a pirate"
"Let it be both then"
"Deal"
Neither of them was aware that while that scene was happening, both crews had been spying on them the whole time.
Some of them cursing, others on the verge of tears.
