Chapter Text
It wasn’t long ago that Wheatley was still a core, stuck floating in space waiting for something to happen so he didn't have to listen to that yellow-eyed fellow ramble about space (nothing wrong with that, of course, it just wasn’t his thing). Luckily, something did happen, but it was certainly a rough landing for the poor guy as his internals heated up to whatever-the-hell degrees kelvin. It was such a rough landing - in fact - that he passed out well before he even hit the ground! Some human must’ve found him afterwards, because he later woke up to some guy with weird goggles staring at him and he found himself to be a lot flatter than before. Luckily, he started to warm up to this new form, even if these weirdos didn’t seem to like talking with him (or even call him his own name! What kind of a nickname was ‘Apsap’ anyways?).
It did get kinda lonely, of course. There was not much to do as a flattish-disc-thing admittedly. At least he was somehow able to hack stuff for once! He was honestly quite proud. Unfortunately, none of the bots he actually wants to talk to acknowledge him. In fact, they blow up as soon as he starts talking! He found these other bots quite rude to be honest.
The humans were no better, to be honest. They kept hitting him with wrenches and tossing him all over the place like a ball! That would be forgiven if he was still a ball, but these guys have no excuse! Often times, whenever he was thrown onto the ground, he would be found by someone and simply just brought back to the ‘owner’ (he wasnt owned by anyone - of course - these guys were just stupid) and the cycle would continue.
Not this time, though.
No, no, this time a different person found him. Instead of that weird man with the glasses, or that creepy masked person, the guy that found him looked arguably just as weird though. Lanky guy, very skinny and lanky guy, he had a hat on and bandages or something on his arms and he was weird looking overall. Wheatley was honestly surprised to find someone different noticing him for once. Nonetheless, it was clear that this man was just as stupid as these other guys.
“Weird? Stupid?! I’ll have you know I’m far from stupid! Im the smartest guy here!”
…Ah. He said that out loud.
Scout noticed the machine almost shrank in on itself, or at least that’s what the blue light shrinking probably meant, after realizing that he heard it. Why the hell can it speak? And why is it british? He might need to ask engineer later. Nonetheless, the thing gave an awkward chuckle before finally apologizing.
“Oh uhm, sorry… about that. To be honest, I didn’t know whether or not people could even hear me... until you- just said that, of course. Your ‘friends’ don't seem to hear me, at least- are-... are they deaf by any chance?”
“Uhhh, no? Might just be them not wanting to chat. I know Spy can be pretty cold n all.”
“Yeah, that seems… about right. I mean, I dunno if we're talking about the same guy here, but he keeps chucking me about like a frisbee! You know, if that isn’t cold then I don't- I don't know what is.” It chuckled awkwardly to itself.
“No shit.” He paused for a second before squatting down and asking, “So, do ya have an actual name or somethin?”
“Ah, right, where are my manners? The name's Wheatley the core, only the smartest of them all - not to brag. You?”
“I'm Jeremy. Though, the others usually call me-”
“SCOUT! WHERE ARE YOU MAGGOT?!” Scout jolted as he heard Soldier shout from halfway across the battlefield.
“Shoot, gotta go little guy. Hopefully I’ll seeya la-”
“NONONONO!” Wheatley shouted, almost panicking by the sounds of it.
“Uhhm- i mean-... could- could you take me with you? I don't want to be left out here… n all…”
Scout stared for a second, before snatching up the little machine and stuffing him away in his rucksack.
“Sure, pal. The battlefield can be dangerous. Now Let’s get back to the battle.” And he sprinted off to get back into the action.
From then on, the both of them knew this was going to be an interesting friendship.
