How Maya Meets the Doctors

Summary:

Maya dislocates her shoulder during a fire, and she's taken to Grey-Sloan. Naturally, rumors fly fast about a blonde female fire captain refusing treatment, and Carina's friends are more than a little curious considering they hadn't met Carina's blonde female fire captain girlfriend yet.

Notes:

Thank you for the love and support, I appreciate every single one of you <3

This does take place in the Grey-Shepherd universe, but it's way before Maya & Carina start their adventures with them. If you remember the Thanksgiving story and how the doctors explain how they first met Maya, that's all this is. It's just dives in deeper then they did in that story.

Station 19 & Grey's Anatomy belong to ABC as do the characters, I just enjoy writing about them :)

Work Text:

“We need to get her to Grey-Sloan, now!” Dean exclaimed as he rushed out of the house, assisting Maya who had dislocated her shoulder inside.

“You are ridiculous!” Andy exclaimed as she came rushing over to the pair alongside Travis and Ben.

“What were you thinking?!” Vic questioned from where she was currently attaching one of the hose lines to a fire hydrant.

“I was thinking I wasn’t going to leave a member of my team behind,” was Maya’s reply, wincing as Ben poked and prodded at her dislocated shoulder.

“She needs to get to Grey-Sloan, now,” Ben said worriedly, hopping into the back of the Aid Car with Maya.

“No, I’m fine,” she protested. “Can’t you just pop it back into place?”

“No, you’re going to Grey-Sloan,” Ben said firmly, making a scowl appear on Maya’s face as she muttered under her breath about not needing to be hospitalized and that she was fine.

“How did this even happen anyways?” Travis asked.

“A wooden beam fell in front of us, and it was blocking the door. We managed to get it out of our way but during the lift her shoulder just popped right out of place,” Dean explained.

“Alright, let’s get you to the hospital,” Travis stated, closing the doors as Maya groaned, throwing her head back against the gurney with her eyes screwed shut in annoyance.

“I’m sorry Maya, but you don’t want to—” Ben was interrupted, his eyes widening as his captain popped her own shoulder back into place.

Maya bit down on her bottom lip hard, drawing blood as pain radiated from her shoulder. “See? Fine,” she managed to get out through gritted teeth.

Ben just shook his head, announcing the most recent development to Travis who stepped on the gas that much harder.

“What have we got?” Dr. Schmitt asked as Ben opened the doors.

“No, absolutely not. He is a child in a lab coat. Get me a grown-up,” Maya growled, clutching her arm tight.

“I’m not a child, I’m a—”

She glared at him, effectively shutting him up. “Absolutely not,” Maya insisted as Ben and Travis wheeled her into the ER.

“Maya, can we trust you not to run away?” Travis asked as they got her set up in the bed.

The blonde just scowled at the two of them, keeping a firm hold on her shoulder. “I don’t have much of a choice, do I? You’ve already told Bailey,” Maya said, glaring at Ben who raised his hands up in defense.

“We’ll check on you later,” he replied, the two of them waving goodbye.

“Don’t bother!” she shouted after them, earning a few looks from the hospital staff that were milling around.

“Hi again,” Schmitt said as he nervously walked up to the fire captain.

Maya glared at him fiercely, shaking her head. “Find me a damn grown-up. The only doctor I want to see is one of the department heads or Chief Bailey herself. If you can’t find me one of them in the next ten minutes, I am walking out of here and I will file a complaint about how useless you are. Are we clear?”

Levi gulped, eyes wide as he nodded and tripped over his own feet in his haste to get away and do as he was told. Maya shook her head, mumbling under her breath in utter disbelief that her team had put her in this position.

“Did you hear what’s happening in the ER?” Maggie asked.

“No, why?” Meredith asked as she took a chip out of Amelia’s bag and began munching on it.

“They’ve got a pretty terrifying patient. That’s what I’ve heard,” Link said, taking a sip of his coffee.

“Yeah, some blonde firefighter captain,” Owen added.

Everyone froze at that.

“You don’t think…?” Amelia trailed off, looking at everyone.

“It couldn’t,” said Meredith.

“Could it?” Maggie inquired.

“There’s only one way to find out,” Amelia replied, standing up and beginning a fast-paced walk to the ER, everyone matching her pace.

“I am not letting you touch me,” Maya growled, clutching her arm tight as she glared at the nurse who was now in her room.

“Ma’am, I really need to—”

“No! I am getting treated by one of the department heads or Chief Bailey herself. If I’m not seen by one of them, I will not be coming back here to be treated and I won’t bring any of my patients here either. Get out!” she shouted, sending the nurse scrambling.

“My God, she’s hot,” Amelia breathed out.

“Amelia!” Meredith exclaimed.

“She’s not wrong,” Maggie muttered to herself.

The group approached, and Maya glared up at them. “I swear to God if they sent more incompetent interns,” she grumbled, pausing her glare when she recognized Link.

“Hi, I’m—”

“Maya Bishop!”

Maya’s head snapped in the direction of the voice interrupting one of the women who was speaking. The voice being her very angry Italian girlfriend who was coming her way. Despite how angry she was, a smile made its way across her lips as she stared at the beautiful woman that was hers.

“That confirms it,” Amelia stated as Carina stopped in front of the blonde and began shouting in rapid Italian, her hands waving around in the air as she paced back and forth in front of the firefighter’s bed.

“She’s so dead,” Maggie said to Meredith, who nodded in agreement.

“Come hai potuto essere così spericolato?! Perché dovresti disobbedire all'ufficiale in comando?! Sai quanto è stato stupido?! Avresti potuto subire un infortunio molto più grave!” Carina exclaimed angrily as worry swam beneath her normally calm chocolate brown eyes. [How could you be so reckless?! Why would you disobey the commanding officer?! Do you know how stupid that was?! You could have suffered a much more serious injury!]

Maya just raised an eyebrow, a soft smile still etched across her lips. “Are you done?” she asked bluntly.

“Sì, ho finito,” Carina huffed out. [Yes, I have finished.]

The blonde smiled, coming forward to wrap her arms around Carina’s waist and leaning in for a kiss, the other woman melting and eagerly reciprocating the embrace. They pulled apart, their foreheads pressed against one another as blue eyes met brown eyes.

“Can I explain now?” Maya asked softly, to which Carina sighed but agreed, and so the captain began speaking. “Dean hadn’t come out of the building yet, and he was the last one in there. I wasn’t about to leave him behind to die, so I disobeyed the commanding officer’s orders to stay back. I found him rather quickly, and as we were making our exit, a wooden beam fell in our way. We managed to move it but I dislocated my shoulder in the process. Despite my protests, the team dropped me off here to get it double-checked since I popped my shoulder back into place on the ambulance. I’m fine, I promise.”

Carina let out a shaky sigh, wrapping her arms around Maya’s shoulders as she buried her face in the crook of the blonde’s neck, breathing in her scent. “I was so scared,” she whispered.

“I know, but I’m fine. I promised you that I would always fight my hardest to come back to you, and I did. I’m here, and I’m fine,” Maya said, pressing a kiss to the side of Carina’s head as she held her tight.

“So this is the famous Maya,” Amelia stated, smirking as it caused the two women to jump apart. “She’s hotter than you described.”

Maya brought a hand up to scratch the back of her neck as her cheeks tinted pink. Carina raised an eyebrow at her friend, scowling with her arms crossed.

“Sorry about her. I’m Meredith Grey,” the general surgeon said, holding her hand out for Maya to shake. “We’ve heard a lot about you,” she added.

Maya gave her a shy smile as she dropped her hand. “All good things I hope.”

“Definitely. I’m Maggie Pierce.”

“Owen Hunt.”

“Amelia Shepherd.”

“I guess you all know me, but I’ll introduce myself anyway. Captain Maya Bishop,” the firefighter stated. “It’s nice to put faces to the names.”

A sneaky grin made its way across Amelia’s face. “Carina’s talked to you about us?”

Maya nodded.

“What has she said?” Maggie asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet as she smiled brightly at the firefighter.

“Has she told you I’m the best neurosurgeon in the country?” Amelia inquired.

“How long have you two been together?”

“Has your team met Carina?”

“How often do you have to work-out?”

“Did you really win a gold medal on a sprained ankle?”

“How fast can you run?”

“What was it like being in the Olympics?”

“What’s it like driving a fire truck?”

“What’s your favorite thing about Carina?”

“Does she really like to sing in the shower?”

“Is her cooking always amazing when she cooks for you? Cause it is when she cooks for us.”

Question after question was being shot at Maya, who was staring at the doctors with wide eyes.

“Are any of you going to treat Maya or are you just here for details?” Carina asked loudly and firmly, shutting everyone up.

“Come on Carina, don’t be like that. We’re just trying to get to know your very attractive girlfriend,” Amelia said with a smirk, making Maya’s blush deepen, even more so when the neurosurgeon winked at her.

Carina sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration as she looked at her friends exasperatedly. “If you can behave like doctors and one of you checks her out, I will invite you over for drinks to get to know Maya.”

“Wait, seriously?”

“Are you being for real?”

“Is this a joke? Cause I would like to know now if it is.”

“If you keep asking questions instead of treating her, I will take it back,” Carina growled.

“I’ve got it,” Link said as he stepped forward.

“No,” the OB stated when she saw Amelia open her mouth to speak. “No more questions,” Carina added with a stern look, prompting Amelia to shut her mouth.

“Link, will you please just tell Carina I am fine and that this isn’t the first time I’ve popped my own shoulder back into place?” Maya asked.

“I know it isn't Maya, but I still have to check,” Link explained, instructing Maya to move her arm in certain ways so he could observe, nodding in satisfaction when he felt around the shoulder for any nerve damage and didn’t find any, and he was happy to see she had popped it back in correctly.

“Wait, you know her?” Amelia asked, an eyebrow raised as everyone looked at him expectantly.

“I’m an orthopedic surgeon, Amelia. Of course I know who she is, she comes to me for check-ups on her ankle sometimes. Along with how many times I’ve seen her or one of her team members for one reason or another,” Link explained pointedly, helping Maya to adjust her arm in the supportive sling he had a nurse bring over. “You’re going to be on desk duty for a while.”

“Seriously?” Maya whined, pouting when he gave her a stern look.

“Seriously,” he confirmed, stepping back when he had finished helping her put her arm in the supportive sling.

“How long?” Carina asked, ignoring Maya’s sighs and grumbles of annoyance.

“It can be anywhere from twelve to sixteen weeks to fully recover. You’re going to have to wear the sling for a few days and apply ice two to three times a day for 15-30 minutes at a time while you’re wearing the sling. You can go back to doing most things in two weeks, but any strenuous activities you’ll have to wait anywhere from six weeks to three months. It just depends,” Link said.

“Great,” Maya groaned.

“I’ll go get you your discharge papers,” the man said, jogging off to the nurse’s station.

“You’ll be fine, amore. Isn’t that what you just told me?”

Maya gave her girlfriend a glare for the teasing, making everyone laugh.

“Do you need me to take you back to your house?” Carina inquired.

“No, you’re working and I don’t want to bother you. I’ll just walk,” Maya said, wincing at the protests that came flying her way.

“This is not a discussion. I’m taking my lunch break and I’m taking you home,” the OB said sternly, shutting everyone up (again).

“Carina, I’ll be fine, really. It’s only ten minutes from—”

“Maya, I am taking you home,” Carina said firmly, crossing her arms over her chest as she gave her girlfriend a look that was asking if she wanted to try and protest.

Maya sighed, thanking Link for the discharge papers before she began to fill them out.

“Blondie is whipped,” Amelia muttered to Meredith.

The firefighter’s head snapped up, glaring something fierce at the neurosurgeon. “What did you just call me?” she growled.

“Blondie,” Amelia replied with a smirk. “What are you gonna do about it? You’re immobilized.”

Maya raised an eyebrow, set the papers down, and stalked over to Amelia until she was inches from her face. “I don’t think you want to test me.”

“And if I do?”

“Maya, come on. Amelia’s just being Amelia,” Carina said exasperatedly, tugging on her girlfriend’s free arm to try and get her away from her friend, specifically so she didn’t murder her.

Maya and Amelia’s gazes were locked with one another, everyone feeling the tension rising in the air.

“What are you all standing around for?!”

“Chief Bailey,” Maya greeted as she and the rest of the group turned to face the woman.

Bailey raised an eyebrow as her eyes landed on Maya’s arm which was in a sling. “Captain Bishop. Good to see you didn’t leave my hospital, but I did hear you were scaring all of my interns, nurses, and residents.”

Maya just shrugged, a sheepish grin making its way across her face. She was somehow unaffected by the woman’s glare.

“Did everyone know who she was except for us?!” Amelia exclaimed, looking at Bailey with shock.

“Dr. Shepherd, in case you’ve forgotten, let me refresh your memory. My husband switched his career from a surgeon to a firefighter, a firefighter who happens to be at Station 19 which is the station that happens to be run by Captain Bishop,” Bailey stated, turning her look from Maya to Amelia.

“Right,” she muttered, an embarrassed blush rising to her cheeks.

“Bailey, I’m going to be taking my lunch break to take this one home,” Carina stated, pointing aggressively at Maya when she said “this one.”

“You do that. Bishop, the next time you come in here try not to scare all of my staff away from doing their jobs,” the Chief said, an unimpressed look on her face.

“No promises,” Maya replied, giving Bailey a cheeky grin.

“Ai Dio mio,” the OB muttered, placing a hand on her forehead in exasperation.

“You lot, get back to work.”

“We’re not letting you forget about those drinks!” Amelia exclaimed as Maya and Carina exited the hospital, Carina’s hand linked with Maya’s good one.

Carina stayed over for the next few weeks to make sure Maya was properly taking care of her shoulder, much to the blonde’s dismay. She did return to Link a few times for check-ups, grinning in sheer delight when she was finally cleared to do physical activities. Much to Carina’s dismay, her friends were non stop pestering her about when they would be invited over for drinks.

“If you keep bugging me about it, it’s not going to happen,” she growled, glaring at the group as she was gathering the discharge papers for her patient.

“Check it out,” Meredith said, gesturing over to the entrance.

A bright smile overcame Carina’s face at the sight of Maya, her stomach grumbling when she noticed her girlfriend had brought her food, reminding her that she hadn’t eaten in over eight hours.

“I brought lunch,” Maya said, pressing a kiss to her girlfriend’s cheek in greeting.

“Hey there blondie,” Amelia said with a smirk, her eyes trailing over the firefighter’s body.

Maya instantly scowled, raising an eyebrow at the neurosurgeon despite the blush she could feel rising to her cheeks at Amelia’s obvious ogling and at the fact that Carina wasn’t alone when she had kissed her cheek. “I told you not to call me that,” she said sternly.

“I’ll call you whatever I damn well please, blondie. You’re dating one of my best friends, let me have my fun,” Amelia shot back.

If looks could kill, Amelia would be nothing but a pile of ashes with the intensity Maya was glaring at her.

“Maya, let’s go to my office,” Carina said, wordlessly handing a nurse the discharge papers as she tugged on Maya’s arm to try and lead her away from her friends.

Maya agreed, shooting Carina a soft smile that the brunette returned, the OB blushing shyly at the blatant love she could see in her girlfriend’s eyes.

“Ewww, they’re acting all lovey-dovey. I think I’m gonna barf,” Amelia said, holding a hand over her mouth as she pretended to gag.

“Carina, you better take me to your office before I get arrested for murder,” Maya growled, prompting Carina to link her hand with Maya’s and hastily lead the firefighter to the elevator.

“We’re still waiting on those drinks!” Maggie shouted.

“Maya’s house, eight o’clock tonight. I’ll text you the address. Don’t be late!” Carina replied before the elevator doors closed.

“Maya’s house, huh?” Amelia asked, a smirk forming at the thought of being in Firefighter Barbie’s home.

“Why my house?” Maya whined as she and Carina got off the elevator and made their way down the hall to the older woman’s office.

“Because your house is bigger,” Carina replied, eagerly snatching the bag of food from Maya’s hands and searching through it, smiling happily as she pulled out her Chinese take-out order and dug in.

A fond chuckle escaped Maya’s lips as she closed the office door and sat across from her girlfriend, the two of them engaging in conversation about everything and nothing as they ate lunch together.

Maya sighed as she began to change out of the umpteenth outfit for the evening. She shed the shirt and the jeans were unbuttoned and thrown to the floor. Her hands instantly latched onto the arms that wrapped around her waist, her eyes fluttering shut as she felt delicate kisses being placed on her neck. She shivered in delight when she felt Carina’s hot breath in her ear.

“You looked amazing in that outfit too, bambina,” Carina said, nuzzling her nose against the sensitive spot behind her girlfriend’s ear. “They’re going to love you.”

“I hope so,” Maya breathed out shakily, one of her hands coming up to wrap around the brunette’s neck, turning her head and moaning as their lips connected, Carina’s tongue eagerly exploring her mouth as if they hadn’t done this hundreds of times before.

“Maybe…” Carina trailed off as one of her hands traveled up to cup Maya’s breast while the other trailed down her stomach and stopped right above her panty line. “Maybe you just need something to help you relax.”

“God yes,” the blonde groaned, throwing her head back against Carina’s shoulder and tilting it to the side as the OB began licking and biting at her neck, her hand pinching and tugging at the hardened nipple through the thin material of the sports bra.

Knowing they didn’t have a lot of time, Carina turned around and shoved Maya against the bedroom wall, eliciting a gasp of surprise and pleasure. She quickly dropped down to her knees and pulled Maya’s panties down, attaching her mouth to the other woman’s core and sucking lightly on her folds, the firefighter’s hips instantly beginning to rock against her face. “You’re soaked, amore,” the brunette breathed out, groaning as she felt how hot and how wet Maya was. She began thrusting in and out of Maya with her tongue, knowing that she would never get sick of the taste, of Maya’s taste.

“Only for you,” Maya moaned out, her eyes squeezed shut in pleasure as she felt herself rising closer and closer to her climax. It was embarrassingly fast, but her girlfriend knew exactly what to do to get her there. Her fingers tangled in wavy brown locks to tug Carina closer. “Carina, don’t stop,” she groaned.

Carina, sensing the blonde was close, switched from fucking Maya with her tongue with three of her fingers, the woman’s head slamming back against the wall as one of her legs moved to hook around Carina’s shoulder to give her better access.

“Yes, oh God. Carina, please,” Maya whimpered, her hips rocking faster and faster against her girlfriend’s mouth and fingers, gasping and moaning when Carina took her clit into her mouth.

“Cum for me, Maya. Show me how good I make you feel,” she said, sucking on the woman’s clit and biting down lightly.

Maya moaned loudly at that, her hips automatically rocking against her girlfriend as her orgasm washed over her, soaking Carina’s mouth and fingers making the brunette groan in delight. Carina never stopped her motions, only slowed them, helping the firefighter come down from her high. She eagerly lapped up every last bit of arousal, feeling Maya’s entire body quiver as she did.

“No more,” Maya gasped out, tugging Carina’s head away, her hips jerking up into Carina’s mouth as she pressed a kiss to her sensitive clit.

Carina grinned as she stood up, bringing her soaked fingers up to Maya’s mouth, pupils blown as she watched Maya take her fingers into her mouth and suck on them, cleaning them off. She crashed their lips together once the blonde had finished, both of them groaning as they tasted Maya in each other’s mouths.

“Feeling better?”

Maya nodded, Carina looking rather smug as she noticed the other woman’s eyes were still glazed over and that she was still a bit blissed out from her orgasm.

“Much,” Maya managed to say. “Would you like me to return the favor?”

Carina gasped, burying her face in the crook of Maya’s neck as the blonde pressed her thigh up against her center, the OB’s hips instantly moving so her core was grinding down against it. “Maya, Dio mio,” she groaned, eyes screwed shut tight as she felt hands land on her hips.

Jolt after jolt of pleasure rushed through Carina’s body as Maya helped her to ride her thigh, gasps and small whimpers escaping as the tensing of Maya’s thigh allowed her clit to rub against it each time she moved her hips. Her nails dug into Maya’s back as she felt that familiar tightening in the pit of her stomach. She had already been close to cumming as she watched Maya unravel beneath her fingers and mouth, so it wasn’t going to take much for her to reach her orgasm.

“Cum for me, my love,” Maya said before sucking lightly on Carina’s pulse point.

“Maya!” Carina cried out, her nails scratching down the blonde’s back as she came, soaking her panties through and leaving a streak of wetness as she rutted her core against her girlfriend’s thigh.

Maya whispered praise in Carina’s ear, helping her girlfriend to come down from her orgasm as she lightly trailed her hands up and down the brunette’s back in a soothing motion, pressing light kisses up her neck until she met her lips. The both of them sighed into the familiarity and ease of it all, breaking apart to press their foreheads against one another, pleased smiles coming across both of their faces as they admired one another.

“What time is it?”

Carina looked over to the clock. “It’s 7:45.”

Maya nodded thoughtfully. “We should probably get cleaned up.”

“Si,” the OB agreed.

They tied their hair up and hopped into the shower, helping to clean one another before they hopped out. Carina had settled on black jeans and a white blouse, Maya opting for black leggings and a blue sweater that matched the color of her eyes, making them look a brighter shade of blue than usual.

“Ti voglio bene, amore mio,” Carina said as she noticed Maya tense up when the doorbell rang as she was brushing her hair out.

Maya nodded, setting the hairbrush down and wiping her now sweaty palms on the front of her leggings. “I love you too. Let’s do this,” she said, taking a deep breath and allowing Carina to lead her to the living room.

She decided to let Carina greet their guests, grabbing a beer from the fridge and taking a few sips to try and ease her suddenly parched throat and also to try and help to calm her nerves. She could hear her girlfriend’s enthusiastic “Ciao” as a greeting and letting everyone know where they could store their shoes afterwards. Taking another deep breath and exhaling, she left the kitchen and entered the living room where everyone was beginning to gather, her eyes widening slightly at just how many people were seated in her living room. “Hi.”

“This is a nice house, Maya,” Meredith said, giving the woman a kind smile as she could recognize the blonde was a little freaked out by how many people had shown up.

“Thank you,” Maya said, taking a seat next to Carina, the brunette instantly placing a hand on her girlfriend’s back to try and help calm her.

“How long have you lived here?” Teddy inquired as she looked around.

“Since I joined the academy in 2012,” Maya replied.

“Would anyone like anything to drink?” Carina asked.

“I’ll take a glass of wine, if you don’t mind,” said Maggie, the other women agreeing except for Amelia, who asked for water.

“Could I get a beer?” Nick asked as he looked at Maya.

“Sure thing,” Maya said as she stood up.

Owen and Link also asked for beers, Winston asking for both water and a beer. The two women made their way to the kitchen, Carina pouring and gathering the drinks as Maya handed them out.

“Thanks blondie,” Amelia said, smirking at Maya’s sigh and eye roll.

“I will get you to stop calling me that,” Maya said as she sat back down with Carina while the neurosurgeon said she would never stop.

“So, give us the details,” Teddy said, looking at the two women expectantly.

“Yes please,” Maggie agreed, leaning forward, her eyes shining with excitement.

“What do you want to know?” Maya asked, taking a swig of her beer in preparation.

“Is the sex good?” Amelia asked with a smirk, making Maya blush bright red and Carina roll her eyes.

Everyone else was thoroughly amused at her antics.

“Amelia,” Meredith scolded, giving her sister a look.

“What? Have you seen her?” she replied, gesturing to Maya. “That paired with Dr. Orgasm, I mean, come on. You can’t blame a girl for wondering.”

“Yes, actually I can,” Meredith replied.

“Amelia, I will make you leave if you don’t kick it off,” Carina said, raising an eyebrow at her friend.

“It’s knock it off,” Maya said to her girlfriend.

“She knows what I meant,” the brunette said, gesturing to Amelia with a look.

“Ok fine, I’ll tone it down. I’m still curious though.”

“You won’t be getting any answers,” Carina shot back.

“That must mean it’s really good then,” she said with a smug look, taking a sip of her water and ignoring Carina’s growl of annoyance.

“Why did you become friends with her?” Maya muttered to her girlfriend, who raised her arms up in exasperation and gave the blonde a look which read that she had no clue how it had happened either.

“Carina told us you met at Joe’s, is that true?”

Carina looked offended at the notion that she had lied, making Maya chuckle before she answered Teddy. “Yeah, that’s correct. I was hesitant to let her buy me a drink at first, but something deep inside of me told me I would regret it if I didn’t let her, so I decided to let her. We ended up talking the entire night and I walked her out to the Uber, and we exchanged numbers. We quickly agreed that we wanted to see one another again, and we started dating.”

“Adorable,” Maggie gushed.

“How long have you two been dating for now?” Link asked.

“It’ll be five months on the eighteenth, si?” Carina asked, receiving confirmation from Maya.

“You’ve kept us away from her for almost five months?!” Amelia shrieked, looking at Carina in utter disbelief.

“Si, and this is why,” she stated firmly, pointing at Amelia and making everyone laugh.

“Does your team know Carina?” Owen asked.

“They do,” Maya said, her eyes glazing over with hurt and sadness as she remembered exactly how that had happened.

“They got to meet her before we got to meet you?!” Amelia exclaimed, making Carina sigh.

“It wasn’t the cute meet and greet you think it was,” Maya said, twiddling her fingers as she looked down, her short hair hiding her face from everyone.

“What happened?” Nick asked softly, everyone taking note of the changes in both women’s demeanor.

Carina sighed out of frustration, pushing her hair out of her face. “It wasn’t easy when Maya was first promoted to Captain. The team was extremely angry and upset because Andy was angry and upset that she or Jack didn’t get the promotion. Andy felt as though Maya had betrayed her by not telling her that she had decided to put in her application for Captain, even though Maya and her weren’t even on very good speaking terms at the time. It—”

“It was awful,” Maya whispered, shaking her head to get rid of the tears as she clutched onto Carina’s hand. “They didn’t want anything to do with me. They belittled and criticized me both in front of and behind my back, they got angry whenever I would give them assignments that needed to be done and that any Captain would give out to their team, they would disobey my direct orders out in the field and put not just themselves in danger but other firefighters we were working with, and they would hush up whatever conversation they were having as soon as I entered the room. I was hurt and angry and disappointed because I have supported every single one of them when they needed it and they couldn’t offer me half an ounce of that support when I was promoted. The only one who supported me was Ben, but I ordered him not to defend me in front of them because he still had some learning to do. Obviously Carina as well, but they didn’t know we were dating, at least not yet.”

“Are you serious?” Winston asked, anger dancing on his face along with everyone else’s at what Maya had just told them.

She looked up at them and nodded, the anguish visible as day on her face. “Carina and I had been together for three months at the time, and she was the only one I felt like I could talk to. I wanted to tell everyone that I was dating this beautiful, intelligent, kind, loving, very humble Italian OB/GYN but I couldn’t. I didn’t want to expose her to the version of this team. I wanted her to get to know my family, the ones who I joked with and I loved and who supported one another no matter what.”

“So how did they find out?” Meredith inquired.

“Everyone was doing chores when Carina came to the station. We went up to the beanery because we decided to make a salad to go with the lasagna she had brought for lunch. They walked in and were extremely confused to see me goofing off and smiling and kissing with a doctor they had only seen at Grey-Sloan a few times. We both stopped what we were doing and Carina instantly changed her demeanor from happy and bubbly to cool and angry. She introduced herself as Doctor Carina DeLuca, Captain Maya Bishop’s girlfriend. Their mouths dropped and she looked so satisfied with herself,” Maya recalled with a slight laugh before she continued.

“They were talking over one another and stuttering except for Ben because my girlfriend works with his wife so he obviously knew we were together. I shut them up rather quickly and told them the reason I hadn’t made our relationship known to any of them was because I didn’t want her to get to know the family that was treating me like absolute shit. I told them I would answer questions when I felt like I could trust them because I didn’t want Carina to get hurt by some sly remark made by one of them. I ordered them to get lunch then to get back to work and that if they needed anything I would be in my office having lunch with Carina.”

“Let me guess, they stopped treating you like shit,” Maggie said, angrily munching on a chip.

“È ridicolo che ci sia voluto che tu avessi una ragazza perché si rendessero conto di quanto ti trattassero male,” Carina said with a scowl, clearly unhappy with the way things had transpired. [It’s ridiculous that it took you having a girlfriend for them to realize how badly they were treating you.]

“Lo so,” Maya replied quietly, bringing Carina’s hand up to her mouth and pressing a soft kiss to the back of it. “Lo so. But yes, to confirm your statement Maggie, they stopped treating me like shit. It took over a month before I gained enough trust in them to even bring up little things about Carina. Like how sometimes I can tell what she’s going to say just by the way she crinkles her left eyebrow.”

“Please, somebody get me a barf bag,” Amelia said through a gag, yelping in shock when Meredith slapped the back of her head, making everyone else laugh.

“I can’t say I’m too fond of 19 after hearing that story,” Link said, a light scowl forming as he thought about everything Maya has just told them.

“Don’t kill them. That’s all I ask,” the firefighter said, eliciting laughter and knowing looks from all of the doctors.

“We can definitely make them wait to get checked out,” Meredith said through a smirk.

“Run a bunch of tests, keep them in the hospital as long as possible,” Amelia said, a gleam in her eyes.

“Declare them unfit for duty everytime they get checked out,” Winston said through a laugh.

Maya was laughing at them all, shaking her head with a wide grin as Carina laughed alongside her.

“Does anyone need another drink?” Maya asked as she stood up to get herself another beer, scooping up Carina’s wine glass before the OB could get a word in.

Maggie and Meredith handed Maya their wine glasses to be refilled and Nick asked for another beer.

“She seems really good for you, Carina,” Teddy said, a soft smile on her face as she looked at her friend who had been radiating happiness ever since she had begun to date the firefighter.

“She has no problem talking back to me, which is definitely a sign she’s a keeper,” Amelia said, raising her water glass in Carina’s direction. “In all seriousness though, she seems to make you happy.”

Carina let out a wistful sigh as her gaze landed on Maya who was gathering the drinks. “She does,” the brunette admitted.

“I assume you’ve told each other you love one another?” Meredith asked.

“We have,” Carina confirmed, a loving smile etched onto her face, her heart fluttering in her chest as she recalled all of the times they had uttered those words to one another.

“Here we are,” Maya announced as she handed the drinks out, leaning down to give Carina a chaste peck on the lips before handing her the glass of wine.

“Grazie, amore,” the older woman replied, taking a sip and smiling softly at Maya when she realized the blonde had remembered her favorite.

“Prego,” said Maya, settling back on the couch next to Carina.

“How rigorous is the workout routine for a firefighter?” Owen asked after he had taken a swig of his beer.

“It’s a lot of weight lifting and training with the gear. Just the turnout gear alone is forty-five pounds. Not to mention all of the heavy equipment we use and the fact that you’ll more than likely end up carrying another firefighter out through a burning building.”

Owen nodded appreciatively. “Sounds intense.”

“It is,” Maya agreed. “That’s part of the reason I love it, is the challenge of it all. The main reason is because I wanted to do something to help people.”

“I was in the Army. Served in Iraq,” Owen stated.

“Hats off to you,” the firefighter said, tipping her beer in his direction before taking a sip.

“Oh boy,” Teddy muttered, reclining back against the sofa as she put her hand to her forehead, knowing exactly where her husband was going with this.

The redhead nodded at Maya. “I had to go through some pretty rigorous training myself.”

Maya’s eyebrow arched rather slowly as she set her beer down. She leaned forward with her elbows on her knees to perch her head in her hands. “Really?”

Carina sighed, setting her wine glass down as she had a feeling as to what was about to transpire.

“Yes. In fact, I would even argue that it’s more rigorous than a firefighter’s training.”

Maya tilted her head at him, an amused smile overcoming her face, everyone noticing the excited gleam in her eyes and making them wonder just what was going to happen. “I wouldn’t be too sure about that,” she stated.

“But I am,” Owen said as he also set his beer down.

“Wanna bet?”

“You’re going to lose.”

Maya’s startlingly sweet smile turned into a smirk as she stood up. “I never lose. How about if I do more push-ups than you, my drinks and meals are on your tab at Joe’s for a week. If you do more push-ups than me, your drinks and meals are on my tab at Joe’s for a week.”

“You’re on,” he said, the two of them shaking hands.

“I want in on this,” Nick announced, standing up.

“Me too,” Winston said.

“Me three,” Link agreed.

“Ok, the losers each have to pay for the winner’s for a week each then,” Owen said, the five of them shaking hands with one another.

“This oughta be good,” Amelia said, licking her lips at the thought of seeing Firefighter Barbie actually use her muscles. She let out a low whistle when Maya took off her sweater and left herself in leggings and a sports bra, showing everyone the very visible six-pack the firefighter had.

The blonde ignored her, tying her short hair back into a small ponytail as they began stretching so their muscles would loosen up.

“Who do you think is going to win?” Meredith asked, looking at her sisters, Teddy, and Carina.

“Maya,” Carina and Amelia said together.

“I feel obligated to say Owen, but I’ve got a feeling he’s in over his head. It’s definitely going to be Maya,” said Teddy.

“I’m with Teddy, I’m obligated to say Winston but Maya has my secret vote,” Maggie said, taking another sip of her wine.

“It’s definitely going to be between Maya and Owen, I’m leaning more towards Maya though,” Meredith revealed.

“Teddy, you’re in charge of counting,” Owen said, receiving a thumbs up in response.

“Are you ready?” she asked with a large grin as they all got set in front of the couches on the carpet, having moved the coffee table off to the side to create more space for them.

“Tell us when,” Maya replied, a look of pure focus and determination on her face, though she did give Carina a dimpled grin before that look overcame her.

“Go!” Teddy shouted, counting out loud as all five of them began doing push-ups at once.

Maya could feel the sweat beginning to form on her body and she could feel her muscles beginning to burn, which meant she was off to a good start. Winston was the first to drop out at eighteen, he collapsed onto the ground at number nineteen and just turned his head to stare at the others. Link was next, having failed to fully pull himself up for number twenty-five, which meant in total he had twenty-four.

Maya grit her teeth as she felt her arms beginning to tremble, but she shook it off and pushed through. She was beginning to lick her lips every now and then to clear the sweat forming on her upper lip. She could feel it starting to drip off her body and she could feel her face burning from the exertion, but she wasn’t going to give up. Little strands of hair were beginning to stick to the back of her neck and to her forehead, but she didn’t let that bother her.

“You tired yet?” Owen asked, sneaking a peek over at Maya.

“Nope,” she breathed out. “You?”

“I’m good.”

“Damn, blondie looks really hot right now,” Amelia breathed out, her eyes wide as she admired Maya with her muscles and sweat dripping down her body, scowling when Carina slapped her upside the head while glaring at her.

“Thirty, thirty-one, thirty-two…” Teddy kept counting, though Nick stopped at thirty-two, which left Maya and Owen.

“Thirty-five, thirty-six, thirty-seven, thirty-eight, thirty-nine, forty…”

Owen couldn’t do it anymore. As soon as he hit forty, he collapsed to the ground, inhaling and exhaling deeply as he tried to calm his racing heart.

“Holy shit, she’s still going,” Maggie said in awe.

“Yes she is,” Carina breathed out through a laugh, shaking her head with a wide grin.

“Forty-five, forty-six, forty-seven, forty-eight, forty-nine, fifty, fifty-one, fifty-two, fifty-three, fifty-four, fifty-five, fifty-six, fifty-seven, fifty-eight, fifty-nine, sixty…”

Once Maya had heard she reached sixty, she stopped. Instead of dropping to the ground like everyone else, she sat up on the floor with her back against the couch, thanking Carina for the water after she took a few sips to ease her very dry mouth.

“I’m proud of you and you look extremely attractive right now, but you stink,” Carina said, crinkling her nose in disgust.

Maya just laughed, ignoring Carina’s squeal of protest as she looped her arms around her girlfriend’s neck and brought her down for a passionate kiss, sticking her middle finger up at the doctors who were cheering and whistling at the pair.

“I love you,” Maya gasped out, pressing her sweaty forehead against Carina’s non sweaty forehead.

“Ti voglio bene,” Carina replied before pulling away from Maya. “You still stink.”

“What did you expect?” she asked as she stood up and began stretching, knowing her arms were going to be very sore the next day. “I just kicked all of their asses in a push-up contest, of course I’m going to be sweating.”

“I’m a man who can admit when he’s wrong,” Owen said jokingly as he shook hands with the blonde.

“You’d be one of very few,” Maya replied, laughing as everyone agreed with her.

“Guess we owe you a month of drinks and meals at Joe’s,” Link said sadly, making everyone laugh.

“You decided to join in,” the blonde reminded him, tossing the men towels for them to wipe the sweat off. “You can keep those,” Maya added, making everyone laugh as she shuddered at the thought of having to wash towels soaked with man sweat.

The rest of the time was filled with nothing but chatter and laughter, Maya effortlessly engaging in conversation with them. It felt like they had all known one another for much longer than a few hours. When Maya went to the bathroom and Carina got up to get more drinks for everyone, the doctors leaned forward and began conversing quietly with one another so as not to be overheard.

“I really like her,” Maggie whispered to everyone.

“Me too,” Meredith said.

“She looks at Carina like she’s her everything,” Teddy said quietly.

“It still makes me want to gag, and I’m only slightly jealous of Carina, but they really do love one another and they fit together in a way I wasn’t expecting,” Amelia stated.

“Do you think we’d be able to get to ride in a firetruck?” Link asked with an excited grin.

Everyone laughed at the man.

“They’re totally talking about us,” Maya whispered to Carina as she observed her girlfriend's very oblivious friends with her from the kitchen.

"Sì, sono d'accordo,” Carina said, her arms wrapped around Maya’s waist as she rested her chin on her girlfriend’s shoulder. [Yes, I agree.]

Maya craned her head around to look at her girlfriend, and Carina took note of the slight apprehension in those bright blue eyes she loved so much. “Do you think they like me?”

Carina let out an incredulous laugh, lifting her head off Maya’s shoulder so she could spin her girlfriend around in her arms. She brought her hands up to cup the blonde’s face and pull her into a kiss, Maya melting as her hands found purchase on slender hips. “Amore mio, they love you.”

She glanced up at the brunette from underneath her eyelashes, making Carina’s heart pound with adoration. “Are you sure?”

“I’m more than sure,” Carina whispered, her thumbs tracing over defined cheekbones as brown met blue. “Because I love you.”

Maya gave her a dimpled grin. “I love you too.”

“Yo, lovebirds! Get out here so we can interrogate blondie some more!”

Maya groaned, dropping her forehead to the brunette’s shoulder, a chuckle escaping Carina’s lips as she rubbed Maya’s back reassuringly. “Come, I sense they’re becoming rather impatient.”

“Murder is bad, murder is bad, murder is bad,” Maya chanted underneath her breath as she and Carina made their way back to the living room with the drinks in hand.

“How does she have so many nicknames?!” Maya asked exasperatedly as she flopped back onto her bed in only a t-shirt and boy shorts.

Carina shrugged her shoulders with a grin, crawling into bed and draping her body over Maya’s, her head on Maya’s shoulder and her leg thrown across her waist, sighing in content as the blonde wrapped an arm around her. Maya’s other hand was underneath her own head. “I don’t know, it’s Amelia.”

“I don’t like her,” Maya grumbled. “She teases me and she calls me names. It's like elementary school all over again.”

“Mi dispiace, bambina,” the brunette replied. While she felt bad her girlfriend had been made fun of in school, she couldn’t help but to be thoroughly amused at her girlfriend’s childlike behavior when she was with Amelia.

“I’m going to strangle her one day. Just you wait,” Maya warned as she reached over to turn out the lamp, emerging them in darkness.

“Si, qualsiasi cosa tu dica,” Carina mumbled through a yawn, her eyes slipping shut as Maya mindlessly traced patterns on the brunette’s back through her t-shirt. [Yes, whatever you say.]

The firefighter smiled down softly at the older woman, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Goodnight, my love,” she whispered.

After that night, Maya’s team was quite surprised to find out that basically every single doctor greeted their captain rather enthusiastically whenever she entered the hospital, even more so when Maya would engage in conversation with them as if they were old friends. They were also becoming quite fed up with the surgeons, seeing as it took them all forever to check any of the firefighters out, they were always kept for additional tests, and they were constantly deemed unfit for duty. They didn’t understand what they had done to make the doctors pissed and they were becoming quite pissed themselves whenever Maya made sure they did exactly what the doctors prescribed, which meant keeping them away from active fires for entire shifts at a time.

Then, as if by magic, almost three months later, the surgeons stopped. The members of the team were checked out in a timely manner, they were free to go after an initial check-up with no extra tests, and they were able to go back on active duty as soon as they got checked out. Little did they know that the surgeons had decided to give them payback for as long as they had mistreated Maya as Captain. Maya, Carina, and the surgeons never breathed a word about it to the team, though the two women did give the doctors knowing and grateful smiles whenever they were “treating” a member of Maya’s team. It was after that incident had ended that Maya and Carina decided to host a BBQ so their friends could mingle outside of their work zones. They all got along extremely well, and that was how the Station 19 team officially intertwined with the doctors at Grey-Sloan, creating one large family.

It would only be a few months later that the COVID pandemic had hit, Maya had been demoted and promoted again, and the two women had become wives before things went back to normal. It would only be a few months after that that Maya DeLuca-Bishop and Carina DeLuca-Bishop would come to play very integral roles in the lives of the Grey-Shepherd children.
