Work Text:
Kaoru has been desperately counting down the days for his holidays with Kojiro to finally arrive. He and Kojiro had rented for a whole week a cabin in the woods, and Kaoru needed that kind of disconnection with his work and with all humanity if possible for a while. He knew he was being a little bit dramatic, but this was the first time in over a year that they were able to have such long holidays, and he wanted to spend every second of it enjoying them with his husband.
Saying that he was an overthinker and an even bigger overplanner was an obvious Kaoru thing to anyone that knew him. There was still a week to go for the start of their holidays, but Kaoru had a list ready with everything they needed for the trip, suitcase open and bed full of clothes.
Kojiro came home soon after Kaoru finished to fill to the brim the first suitcase, his eyes full of worry and hesitation, and Kaoru didn’t like that look on his husband at all.
“Don’t get mad!” Kojiro pleaded, hands up already in surrender.
Kaoru thought the worst, like that their reservation for the cabin got canceled. But looking at the guilt on Kojiro’s gaze made Kaoru’s anxious thoughts go somewhere else.
“What did you do?” Kaoru demanded anxiously.
“Nothing! It was just a coincidence, I swear I didn’t tell them where we’re going.” Kojiro said hurriedly, worsening Kaoru’s anxiety.
“What are you talking about?” Kaoru asked, not understanding what his husband was trying to say.
Kojiro sighed, sitting on the bed and patting his side so his husband would sit with him to explain what probably was bad news. When Kaoru obliged, Kojiro took Kaoru’s hands on his, caressing them with his thumb soothingly.
“It seems that Shadow and Oka rented a cabin too in the place we’re going, and they’re bringing the kids with them. But they’re going just for the weekend! We’ll have five more days to be alone. And who knows, maybe they won’t tag along with us either on the weekend.” Kojiro explained, trying to calm Kaoru’s visibly increasing anxiety.
Kaoru took several deep breaths then sighed, knowing that they couldn’t do anything about it. It was pointless to worry about it now.
“Yeah, no, they absolutely will want to tag along with us and be a pain in the ass.” Kaoru said defeated, laying on bed and wondering why he had to have friends in moments like this.
“I’m sure it won’t be so bad.” Kojiro said reassuringly, laying beside him and kissing his forehead tenderly.
Kaoru sighed again, dramatically.
“I wish you were right.”
The day of the start of their holidays Kaoru was a little bit annoyed and pretty much anxious, but he didn’t want to ruin the holidays for them with his sour mood, so he tried to put on a good face and be as positive as he could.
Do it for him. He thought over and over again like a mantra, thinking about Kojiro.
Kojiro stacked the last suitcase on the car's trunk and sat on the driver's seat, staring at Kaoru with so much love on his gaze that Kaoru felt his heart leap like it was the first time he realized he was in love with his best friend; feeling how his anxiety was being a little bit soothed. Something that only Kojiro knew how to do.
“Are you ready to go?” Kojiro asked. Kaoru nodded, smiling softly at his husband. Kojiro smiled back, caressing Kaoru's cheek and kissing him tenderly. “Okay, let's go then.”
Kojiro started the engine and they put a start to the trip and their holidays.
He thought that it was so easy to forget why he was in such a bad mood when Kojiro was a literal ray of sunshine singing while he was driving. Kaoru couldn’t tear apart his gaze from his husband, smiling softly and feeling incredibly lucky to be part of his life.
“We’re almost there.” Kojiro announced, caressing Kaoru’s thigh, letting his hand rest there for a few minutes. Kaoru marveled at how something so simple as that could bring him so much comfort and calmness.
When they finally arrived at the area in the woods where the cabins were located, another car was parked just right by their cabin’s side; a car that Kaoru recognized immediately.
“They’re already here. That’s Oka’s car.” Kaoru deadpanned.
Kojiro sighed, parking beside their friend’s car.
“Don’t worry, baby, I’m sure everything will be alright.” Kojiro said, trying to cheer his husband up.
Kaoru narrowed his eyes.
“Their cabin is just beside ours.” Kaoru remarked bitterly.
“Yeah, and maybe they won’t bother us, who knows?” Kojiro tried again, he wanted to stay positive, but Kaoru wasn’t helping at all.
“Cherry and Joe are finally here!!” Came Reki’s voice from one of the windows of their cabin.
Kaoru glared at Kojiro with a raised brow, trying to convey a big ‘I told you so’.
They exited the car, and Miya came running directly to hug Kaoru.
He wanted to stay pissed, but Miya being affectionate was a rare thing, so maybe he could pretend for a while that he wasn’t totally pissed out for not being able to have the quality time he expected —and deserved— with his husband.
Then Reki and Langa came to say hi too, and all the kids went inside the cabin again. Shadow and Oka were outside, seated comfortably together on the porch of the cabin. Kaoru and Kojiro went with them before unpacking their things.
“Hey, I wanted to apologize if this totally ruins your holidays, Hiromi and I didn’t know you were gonna come here too until Joe told us.” Oka said, voice full of concern and guilt.
Kaoru sighed. Yeah, he was totally pissed about it, but they were not to blame either.
“As long as you have the kids tamed it’s all good.” Kaoru finally said.
Shadow and Oka shared a relieved gaze, making Kaoru feel a little bit guilty for having been so focused in that their friends were ruining their holidays, when they were here for the exact same reason as them, and he objectively knew that the kids didn't do anything wrong either. So maybe he could try to focus on enjoying the weekend with Kojiro and friends and then think about the rest of the wonderful five days he'll have with his husband.
“Don't worry about the kids, we'll entertain them. Go unpack everything and chill for a bit. If you want, we could meet later to have lunch together.” Shadow suggested with a wide smile.
Kaoru felt like a horrible person; Shadow's words felt like a punch in the gut.
“Thank you, man.” Kojiro answered for them, taking Kaoru's hand and leading him to their cabin. “I can feel your anxiety from here.” Kojiro said as soon as they were inside the cabin, taking Kaoru's face on his hands gently and kissing him to make all his worries disappear for a moment.
“They haven't done anything wrong, and I was so ready to blame them for ruining our holidays.” Kaoru lamented.
Kojiro smiled softly at him, pecking him tenderly.
“Yeah, but you didn't, and I'm so proud of you.” He said encouragingly. Kaoru smiled with relief. “Why don't you explore the cabin while I bring our luggage here?” Kojiro suggested. Kaoru nodded, heading in search of their room.
Their room was at the end of a long corridor. It was big and spacious, with a huge window that overlooked the views of a beautiful waterfall and a river. Kaoru closed his eyes, feeling how his body started to relax at the sound of the water and nature. Kojiro came to the room not long after, hugging his husband from behind and kissing his neck slowly and sweetly, making him melt against Kojiro's body.
“Are you feeling better?” Kojiro asked in a quiet voice, his lips still ghosting over Kaoru’s skin.
Kaoru sighed contently, caressing Kojiro's arms.
“Yeah, I think so. I just need some time alone with you right now.” Kaoru said, turning around, hooking his arms around Kojiro's neck, kissing him slowly but deeply. Now it was Kojiro's turn to melt against his husband's body, gripping his waist as gently as he could.
“Should we unpack now?” Kojiro asked against Kaoru's lips.
Kaoru smiled mischievously.
“That could wait a little longer.” He answered, leading them to the bed to cuddle and keep kissing for a while longer.
When lunch time came, Kaoru and Kojiro went to their friend's cabin. Kaoru was in a much better mood after a couple of hours of good quality time with his husband.
“Do you need any help?” Kojiro asked, approaching their friends in the kitchen.
Shadow put his hands on Kojiro's shoulders to lead him back to the living room.
“You always cook for us, let us return the favor just for once.” Shadow said with a small smile.
Kojiro smiled back at him, he didn't mind cooking for his friends, he loved to do it. But he appreciated that his friends wanted to do it for them at least once; it felt nice.
“Thank you.” Kojiro finally said, sitting on the couch beside his husband and Miya.
“Where are Reki and Langa?” Kaoru asked.
Miya shrugged.
“Probably doing gross boyfriend things in the woods.” Miya said plainly, joking. “They went outside for a walk.” He added in the end.
“We should do gross husband things in the woods later.” Kojiro suggested jokingly to Kaoru, winking at him and making him laugh.
“Yeah, we definitely should do that.” Kaoru agreed.
Miya faked a gag noise, making them burst out laughing. Kojiro ruffled Miya's hair affectionately.
When Reki and Langa returned from their walk they all helped setting the table to have lunch. To Kaoru's surprise, what Oka cooked was pretty good, it wasn't anything near Kojiro's skills, but he had to admit that his friend was a very decent cook.
“There's a lake near the waterfall, if you guys want we could go later to have a swim.” Reki suggested excitedly.
Kaoru thought that it was indeed a very good idea. He was used to swimming in the sea; he loved to swim lazily with his husband after the sunset, but he rarely had the chance to swim in a lake.
“Yeah, why not?” Kojiro was the one who finally answered, smiling softly at Kaoru like he could read his thoughts.
Kaoru smiled back at him, thinking over and over again how much he loved his husband.
The lake was surrounded by trees, shadowing the area and shielding them from the heating sun.
“Come on, guys! The water feels amazing!” Reki said, splashing some water to Langa, making his boyfriend pout, glaring at him. Langa splashed back at him, then they both couldn't stop laughing. Miya swam away from Reki and Langa, trying to swim peacefully on his own.
Shadow and Oka sat at one of the rocks, soaking their legs inside the lake, gazing at each other lovingly.
“Wanna come?” Kojiro asked Kaoru from the water, offering a hand to his husband.
“Okay, but let me get in slowly.” Kaoru pleaded, fearing the water would be freezing cold.
“Of course.” Kojiro said. Then he smiled mischievously and Kaoru didn't have enough time to react before his husband shoved him inside the water in one single strong pull.
“I hate you!” Kaoru spluttered, splashing water angrily at his husband. Luckily the water wasn’t as cold as he expected.
Kojiro chuckled, hugging him strongly.
“No, you don't.” Kojiro stated, making Kaoru perch his legs around his waist so he could hug him like a koala. Then he caressed his face tenderly, brushing aside the strands of hair that escaped from his ponytail, gazing at him with such adoration and love that Kaoru felt his whole body go weak.
“You're lucky that I love you.” Kaoru said, trying to sound pissed, but the wavering of his voice betrayed him completely, making Kojiro smile widely.
“Yeah, I'm very lucky.” Kojiro said in a whisper against Kaoru's lips.
Before they could kiss like they very much wanted, Reki and Langa came to splash them playfully, and Kaoru and Kojiro didn't have a choice but to beat them at their own game.
And they absolutely crushed them.
When the sun was starting to lower down, they headed back to the cabins to have a shower and relax for a little while.
Kaoru felt like he’d could go to sleep immediately, but he also wanted to enjoy until the last second with Kojiro.
“Do you want to take a nap before dinner?” Kojiro asked, smiling softly at him.
Kaoru shook his head, hugging Kojiro like a clingy kid, making him chuckle.
“Do you want to have a walk then?” Kojiro suggested.
“Only the two of us?” Kaoru asked, his voice full of hope.
“Yeah.”
That's the only thing Kaoru needed to put on some warm clothes and take Kojiro's hand to lead him outside.
The air of the night was a little bit chillier than Kaoru anticipated, but as soon as Kojiro noticed that, he perched his arm on Kaoru's shoulder's, drawing him closer to his body. Kaoru felt Kojiro's body warmth immediately warm his own a little bit.
“Are you having a good time here?” Kojiro asked worriedly.
“Surprisingly, yes. I've been having a lot of fun with you and with them, too. But I still want to have you all to myself.” Kaoru answered honestly.
Kojiro chuckled, hugging him a little bit tighter.
“You only have to wait 'till tomorrow and I'll be all yours.” He stated, taking one of Kaoru's hands on his to kiss his knuckles gently.
Kaoru loved his friends, but he definitely was looking forward to finally being all alone with his husband.
“Where were you?” Miya asked when they gathered together to have dinner.
Kojiro gazed at Kaoru before answering, smiling mischievously.
“Doing gross husband things in the woods.” He finally said.
Miya fake gagged once again.
“Eugh, disgusting.”
Shadow came to where they were, laughing at Miya's distressed expression.
“Don't be so rude, maybe someday you'll have someone to be this disgustingly in love with.” Shadow said, ruffling Miya's hair.
“Or maybe I'll never be interested in romance.” Miya said, sounding way more serious than their conversation was being just a moment ago. Kaoru sensed that maybe Miya didn't feel very comfortable talking about this.
“Yeah, he's right, maybe he'll never be interested and that's totally fine too.” Kaoru defended him, trying to make the situation feel as light as possible.
Miya smiled at him, gratitude visible in his gaze. Kaoru smiled back at him.
After dinner, they all gathered around a bonfire to tell some ghost stories. Everyone but Reki thought they were pretty funny, that's why Langa had to take him inside their cabin so he could be less frightened. Miya went next inside when he started to feel sleepy, and soon after, Shadow and Oka followed him.
When the fire was starting to die down, Kaoru rested his head on Kojiro's shoulder, feeling how the sleep was coming to him too. Before Kojiro could ask if he wanted to go to sleep, he got up so he could carry Kaoru to their cabin in bridal style.
“You didn't need to carry me.” Kaoru complained in a sleepy voice, hiding his face against Kojiro's neck.
“I know, but I love to treat you like the princess you deserve to be.” Kojiro said jokingly.
Kaoru grumbled in answer, making his husband laugh.
As soon as they both got in bed, Kaoru hugged Kojiro tightly and they fell asleep before they could even think how tired they were.
The next day passed faster than they thought it would, and their friends were already packing everything inside the car's trunk for heading back home.
“I really hope you two have an amazing holidays, you really deserve it.” Oka said while everyone was getting inside the car.
“Thank you, I really had a great time with you all.” Kaoru said honestly.
He still felt a little bit guilty for having been pissed at his friends. He really had a great time with them, and he hoped they wouldn't feel like they had ruined their holidays, which they totally didn't.
“See you guys next week!!” Reki said enthusiastically from his seat, waving goodbye at them.
They all exchanged their goodbyes, and their friends finally headed back home.
They were finally alone.
“What do you want to do now?” Kojiro asked.
Kaoru gazed at him with lidded eyes, smiling suggestively. Kojiro didn’t need anything else to understand what his husband was suggesting, smiling back at him, they rushed to their cabin to finally take advantage of that much desired alone time.
Kaoru felt like the rest of their holidays flew by like the blink of an eye. But he enjoyed immensely every moment of every single day he spent with her husband. They did a lot of things, and some times, they did absolutely nothing at all, just resting and enjoying each other's company surrounded by the pleasant sounds of nature.
“We should travel to Europe on our next holidays, there's still a lot of places in Italy that I want to show you.” Kojiro said, cuddling his husband in bed.
Kaoru hummed in agreement, nuzzling his nose against Kojiro's neck.
“I'd give anything so we could have more free time to travel as much as we want.” Kaoru said, sighing.
Kojiro smiled softly at him, caressing his cheek.
“Me too. At least we have the rest of our lives to do all of that and more.” Kojiro said encouragingly.
Kaoru's heart did a flip thinking that he really would get to spend the rest of his life with someone as incredible as his husband. It still felt irreal after so many years; and the very thought made his heart flutter like crazy over and over again.
“What a wonderful life we are going to live.” Kaoru said, kissing his husband lovingly, trying to pour into that kiss all the love he felt for him, and Kojiro kissed him back like he felt exactly the same.
“Yeah, the best life I've ever dreamed of.” Kojiro said after they break apart, gazing at his husband adoringly.
They kept kissing and kissing, like they could spend the rest of their lives just kissing and showing how much they loved each other. And maybe that’s exactly what they wished they could spend doing for the rest of their lives.
