Chapter Text
At first, Yoongi considered lying and claiming to be a beta. He could use scent blockers and he was very careful with his heat, so it would’ve been passable. But the more he thought about it as he prepared for his audition, he realized he shouldn’t start the base of his career off as a lie. If they were to figure out he was an omega later on, things could go south. So he bravely announced his name, age, secondary gender, and birthplace. Min Yoongi, 18, omega, from Daegu .
From the moment he was born, his parents, both betas, looked down upon him. His brother, a strong beta, got a pass for how tall and how smart he was. He was supposed to be their precious alpha, but he wasn’t, far from it actually. His mother had a miscarriage on her third pregnancy and they didn’t try again. So Yoongi was left as the disappointment of the family despite his genius brain in music and how hard he worked to keep his grades up and earn some money to give back, he never deserved a second glance.
He got second place at the audition.. Now the trainee spot was only opened to first, but Yoongi didn’t feel any less proud of himself for making it that far. He was ready to grab his bag and take the bus back down home when he was stopped and offered a spot anyways. He nearly teared up as he agreed, cursing his parents in his head for saying he wouldn’t make it anywhere.
Then he met Namjoon - and the rest of the trainees but they didn’t really matter as much as this one did. He was a tall, skinny thing at the age of 17, towering right over Yoongi. Something in his eyes made Yoongi want to run him over with his moped. Nervously introducing himself to someone with no scent, Namjoon didn’t comment on his status, but that didn’t mean they got along.
As happy as Yoongi was that no one in the dorm acknowledged he was omega - and one of the few that was presented -, there were still plenty of things to fight about, even get physical sometimes. That’s what happens when you put a bunch of pubescent boys in a small space and force them to live together.
Nothing escalated for a while, Yoongi and Namjoon would argue over the computer, they would fight for meals against one another, and beds if someone had stolen theirs when it came time to sleep. Still, Yoongi preferred being there than at home where his dreams were imaginary.
Things with Namjoon changed after one night in particular. Yoongi had been fast asleep on his ripped mattress against the floor. He liked the one in the corner where he could charge his phone. He wasn’t a heavy sleeper, no matter how much they all egged him on for sleeping more than the average person, so he roused from his slumber as soon as someone approached him. He blinked in the dark, trying to identify the shadow over him when he felt a hand grab his and drag it to-
Yoongi jumped away, “What the hell are you doing?!” He yelped. That’s when his nose caught the scent of an alpha in rut. There were two alphas in the dorm and there had yet to be an incident between them. Yoongi watched his heat calendar every day to ensure that didn’t happen. Leave it to one of these assholes to not know how to keep track of themselves.
“Come on, you’re an omega , this is what you’re for.” Yoongi recognized the voice now and he growled.
“As if I’d ever do anything with you , get the fuck away from me.” He attempted to sit up, push away, but the alpha persisted, dragging Yoongi close. Yoongi bit his tongue when he felt the hard on press against him.
“Don’t think we don’t know why you’re actually here,” He chuckled and Yoongi grimaced, “There’s no way an omega would survive in a group like this. Bang only allowed you in so you could satisfy us.”
“That’s not true,” Yoongi trembled to speak, “I’m a good rapper and a better producer, things you’ll never be.”
“Oh yeah? You think you’ll actually make it with us? A tiny, pretty omega like you? You think we actually accept you? Do you know how many times we’ve talked about taking you in all sorts of ways, using you until you can’t walk, keeping you backstage for when we’re done and want to let off steam? You’re going to be a cum bucket, Yoongi, nothing more. An omega could never be a real rapper, they’re too busy craving cock to do anything else.”
Yoongi wanted to repeat its not true but he couldn’t get the words out. All this time the men he thought he bonded with were thinking of him in such crude ways? They thought he was just some omega to use and discard at their own pleasure? Yoongi was a person, a rapper, a son, a brother, and an omega. He was just like them. Saying shit like that, it disgusted him and he was weak for it. He could feel the tears sting his eyes and the last thing he wanted to do was cry in front of this bastard.
“Are you done fighting back? Ready to be a good boy and let me do what I want?” Yoongi kept his mouth shut in fear that a sob would escape him. He didn’t want to do this, he didn’t want to believe his fellow trainees didn’t view him as an actual part of the team. Even Namjoon? Were they all the same?
He sniffled, ready to throw all his might into pushing him away and running out the room. But he didn’t get the chance because through the small moonlight coming in from the window, Yoongi caught sight of Namjoon standing over them, sharp eyed glare directed down to the other. Yoongi's breath hitched as Namjoon grabbed the back of the guy's shirt and hauled him up with one arm.
“What the- dude what the hell-“ Yoongi remained seated as Namjoon dragged the other out of the room, ignoring his struggle. The silence that followed made Yoongi uncomfortable, simply for the fact that he was now surrounded by the other trainees. They were asleep - at least he thinks they are - but the words stuck. Do you know how many times we’ve talked about taking you in all sorts of ways . He felt sick but he couldn’t move.
A couple of minutes passed before Namjoon returned, looking frustrated as he kneeled down in front of him, “Are you okay?” He asked. Yoongi nodded, eyeing the doorway, looking for the other, “Don’t worry, I kicked him out. Bang is asleep, but I sent him a text.” Yoongi's gaze flickered around the room, and like Namjoon understood exactly what he was trying to get at, he added, “I’ll talk to them. No one should treat you like that, I won’t allow it.” Yoongi's eyes locked with Namjoons. He protected him. Despite Namjoon being like the force of a wrecking ball throughout his day and Yoongi has told him more than once that his lyrics were shit and made fun of him for not being able to even cook rice correctly, Namjoon protected him.
Yoongi had stuck by his side since then. Not immediately, but gradually. Yoongi was allowed in their crappy little studio alone for once without Namjoon following behind in hopes of getting to use it first - like Yoongi would give it to him without a fight. But he knew that Namjoon was taking this opportunity to talk to the other trainees. Asking them if they too thought Yoongi wasn’t actually a part of their group. Having to ask them if they only saw Yoongi as a hole to use. There was a lot of shame in him just being there and although all Yoongi wanted to do was run away, he had to stay. He had to make it, he had no other choice.
Giving what he thought was enough time, Yoongi returned to the dorm to a significantly less amount of people. Namjoon waited for him along with two other trainees. They were sheepish, admitting to not having a clue about how the others felt and apologizing on their behalf. Yoongi noticed the other alpha was missing. Assholes.
As soon as he was left alone with Namjoon, he shyly spoke up, “I’m sorry… I should’ve left instead, now we’re nowhere near ready to become a group..”
Namjoons stare was heavy, “Don’t apologize hyung, you did nothing wrong. Anyone who sees omegas as lower class don’t deserve to live in peace, and they definitely don’t belong here. We’ll build a group without them, one that isn’t prejudice. What if we get another member that happens to be an omega, that doesn’t mean they're not just as deserving of a spot here, right?”
Yoongi nodded, then paused, “Hyung?” He asked shyly. Namjoon flushed a little. It was the first time he had addressed Yoongi as such.
“Well, we’ve gotten pretty close..” The younger one scratched at his head awkwardly.
Yoongi chuckled, “We have.” And so Yoongi became hyung. And he stuck by Namjoon until Hoseok joined them.
Introduced as a potential singer, Hoseok was a cheery addition to their dorm. It had become somewhat solemn at the absence of people in the room, but Hoseok was able to turn that around. He was shy at first but with Namjoons help, he was able to open up. Yoongi told him he would teach him how to rap since they didn’t necessarily need singers for their group. The two spent hours in front of the computer like usual, now with Hoseok sitting quietly behind them and observing.
“Are you two paired?” Hoseok had asked one day as he watched them fight over the mouse again.
Yoongi and Namjoon froze, both letting go of the mouse at the same time as it rattled on the desk, “H-Huh?” Yoongi sputtered. He didn’t know Namjoon that long, geez.
“You’re always together, and bickering. Reminds me of my parents. I asked the other hyungs and they said you’ve been like this since you met.” Hoseok explained.
Yoongi leaned back in his chair, hoping he wasn’t too red at the accusation, “We’re not. He hasn’t even presented yet.”
“What does presenting have to do with anything?” Namjoon mumbled the exact time Hoseok spoke up, “I didn’t know you had a type, Yoongi hyung.”
“I don’t,” He gave Namjoon the stink eye, “But I wouldn’t want a thick headed, clumsy alpha.”
Namjoon gasped, crossing his arms, “Well whether I’m an alpha or beta, I wouldn’t want a sour, rude omega like you .”
Yoongi glared and they both huffed, turning away from one another
“So not a pair, got it.” Hoseok laughed between them, interrupting their argument by showing them what he had learned so far about music production.
Yoongi would much rather be with someone like Hoseok, sweet, always knows how to make you laugh, can sense when you’re having a bad day and he’ll instantaneously do everything in his power to cheer you up. Namjoon was nothing like that. He was a bit handsome - maybe - but so was Hoseok, making him the clear winner between this competition Yoongi made up. Stupid Namjoon.
The three were getting along just fine when it was thrust upon them that they were switching from a hip hop group to a standard idol group. At first Yoongi wasn’t on board at all , he didn’t come all this way to become an idol, but after they were the only three left, he couldn’t possibly leave. Despite how stubborn Namjoon was, he was a child. He was 17 years old and he was scared of all these changes and people he grew close to leaving, again . Hoseok was no better, wearing his emotions openly, worried about their future now that they switched. Yoongi, being the oldest, had to stay and make sure they were going to be okay.
Bang told them Hoseok could dance - a fact Yoongi didn’t expect he would need to know until now. Yoongi distracted them by telling Hoseok they needed choreography for their songs now. He told Namjoon to get to work on those lyrics even if it was just going to be the three of them from now on. He didn’t mind debuting as a three person rap group, so he didn’t mind debuting as a three person idol group either - even if Hoseok proved to be a better rapper than singer, they’d figure it out.
Thankfully that was when Seokjin dropped in. Bang brought him in one day without a prior announcement of a new member. Seokjin was tall, only 19, but he looked down at Yoongi with a smile when they met.
“I’m Kim Seokjin,” He held his hand out to Yoongi first. When Yoongi stuck out his hand for a handshake, Seokjin grabbed it gently, flipping it over and sniffing at his wrist. Yoongi, Namjoon, and Hoseok all stared at him like he was psychotic, “Ah, it’s so nice that there’s an omega here with such a sweet scent.” Yoongi had nearly forgotten about that. Being around two people with no secondary gender who couldn’t smell him was making him not feel like an omega at all. Which wasn’t a bad thing, but the comment of his natural scent perked Yoongi up. Seokjin smelled nice too, strong, protective. Yoongi liked it.
And that’s how Seokjin triggered Yoongi's heat only a day later.
Sharing the same space with an alpha with strong pheromones again caused his heat to arrive early. Yoongi was annoyed the morning he felt hot, knowing what was to come. He hasn’t gone into heat around Namjoon and Hoseok yet, nothing forcing him to go into it and if he tried hard enough, he could ward it off. But now, stuck with a haughty alpha means he’ll go into heat more regularly. Lucky him.
After informing Bang, it was time to explain to the members that he’s locking himself in the extra room at Bangs house for the next few days. “It’ll only be a week at max.” Yoongi said at the table.
“Huh?” Namjoon frowned, “That long?”
Seokjin smacked his arm, “Have you never been around an omega before? Heats last for a few days and it’s a sensitive time for them, be respectful.”
Namjoon pouted, “My moms an omega but she didn’t really talk about that stuff…”
Seokjin tsks, shaking his head disapprovingly, “Seriously, that’s what’s wrong with the world. Everyone should learn about all secondary genders and their habits, despite if you end up being an ordinary beta.”
Hoseok nodded along to what he was saying, “That’s true! Since there’s an omega in the group, we should learn all about hyungs habits.” And just like that, all eyes turned to him, waiting, watching.
“Oh, uh,” Yoongi glanced down at his nearly empty place, “I don’t really have habits besides my heat.. I’m the only omega in a beta family so they didn’t really teach me how to be one. I’m more like a beta if I’m honest… You can just treat me like that.”
“Nonsense!” Seokjin ejected, “Omegas are the backbone of our society! After a long, hard day of work, you just want to go home and see your cute omega! One smile from them can put your heart at ease! Their scent will immediately make everything okay! They’re nurturing and need to be taken care of - that’s who you are Yoongi yah! Our omega.”
Yoongi heated up at the claim. Namjoon did not; “Hyung isn’t like that. He doesn’t need to be protected and treated like a baby. Whatever you learned about omegas is stereotypical. You should get to know hyung before making any assumptions about that stuff.”
Seokjin didn’t mind the scolding, “You can argue as much as you want Namjoon, but if you’re an omega or an alpha, your instincts get the best of you. Perhaps Yoongi didn’t grow up with omega habits but after a while of being around alphas, he’ll be building heat nests with our shirts in no time.”
Namjoon frowned, “You shouldn’t let your secondary gender change who you are or how you act around others. You’re you, no matter what.”
“Says someone who hasn’t presented yet.” Seokjin smiled, taking a sip of his drink.
“It’s okay Joon,” Yoongi stopped the younger before he could retaliate, “I don’t mind Jin hyung. It’d be nice to learn how to embrace and live as an omega. There’s nothing wrong with falling back on your instincts.”
Namjoon didn’t look satisfied with that answer but dropped it regardless.
Yoongi spent the next four days holed up in Bangs spare room, fucking his fingers and the toys he shoved into a bag he brought over into himself. He’s experienced enough heats alone to be used to it - that and the fact that he’s never felt the pleasure of a cock so he didn’t know what he was greedily wishing for. Once he was sure all his symptoms were gone, he returned to the dorm. Then Seokjin proceeded to enter his rut and had to be excused for the next couple of days and if Namjoon didn’t leave Yoongi's side after he came back, he had no complaints.
Jungkook came quite quickly after Seokjin. He was only 13 and Yoongi was overwhelmed with how large the age gap was now. They all had gathered in the living room when Jungkook had arrived. He was tiny, with big eyes. Yoongi felt the urge to protect . He assumed that was how alphas felt in their packs. Though he was so young, Jungkook had a strong voice and in no time he would become their main vocalist.
It took a while for Taehyung to join them but once he did, the group felt complete. Three rappers, three vocalists. At the tender age of 16, Taehyung brought enough energy to match Hoseok. So there they were, Bighits star rapper, the best dancer in Korea, an alpha with a tendency to mother all of them, a literal child who has barely hit puberty, a newbie who didn't even sign up to audition, and an omega who could be confused for anything but. But they were together. They only had each other. They had to make it work somehow.
So they practiced their asses off in the recording studio and the dance room. Seokjin and Yoongi cooked whatever they or Bang could get their hands on - lots of instant noodles and rice -, Hoseok helped when they struggled with following choreography, Jungkook would whine about his math homework until the rest of the crowded around him trying to figure it out, Taehyung allowed for cracking jokes in the space of awkward silence. They fit, strangely enough. Yoongi was starting to see what they could really do. It took a lot to get comfortable around a new family, but they were doing it.
Then Jimin came out of nowhere, halting their plans. “It’s nice to meet you all, I’m Park Jimin…” Was the first thing he said after no one else spoke up. They were so close to debuting, they could all feel it, and here comes yet another trainee. It was fair to say they were all hesitant to welcome Jimin in. They’ve been bonding all this time, and now they were supposed to add a new member to the bunch. “I’m-I’m, um 16 and an alpha..” Yoongi smelled it as soon as he was walking in with Bang. He was so young, but already presented. Namjoon stepped up to shake his hand and introduce himself. The rest followed until Jimin reached him.
Yoongi stared at him, drinking in his appearance. Jimins timid smile lessened, but then Yoongi was holding his hand out, wrist turnt upwards and the younger was blinding him with his smile. As Jimin gently took his wrist and sniffed it, Yoongi thought having these alphas around wasn’t too bad. They weren’t like those assholes in the past.
Turns out Jimin was a dance prodigy and held the voice of an angel. With him, that set up their final seven. Bang promised there would be no more spontaneous members sprung on them.
So, now with Jimin, they sang, rapped, danced, ate, slept, wrote, laughed, cried, fought together until it was time to debut. Bang had succeeded in getting them a slot on a music show. Yoongi's dreams were finally coming true. All their struggle and tears shed were for a reason .
A few days before their debut, Yoongi woke up to an empty room, like usual. He was the last to get up on his own or woken up in a rush if they had an early schedule. Still, he was aware the others let him sleep in a tiny bit more than them. That’s why Yoongi only ever had a few minutes to get ready and shoved out the door. So today, like many mornings, he stared at the lifeless beds. He could sleep a little more, couldn’t he? Seokjin would wake him up - a soft hand over his cheek, Yoongi relishes in the gentle cup until it turns into a pinch and he’s broken out of his slumber by the eldest scolding .
He felt bad sleeping so late - sometimes at the same time as Namjoon but even the designated leader was always awake on time. He groaned, whining a little under his blanket before throwing it off and sitting up. His body was heavy, he was sore, tired, what did he do in his past lives to endure this torture? He sleepily pulled himself up, rubbing his eyes as he made his way towards the kitchen.
“Slow down JK, the foods not going anywhere.” He heard Seokjin's voice say. Yoongi smiled, following it and the smell of a good breakfast.
“Listen, now that you’re being fed, I wanted to talk about something.“ Namjoons announcement stopped Yoongi from entering, “I think the seven of us could be a really good group soon, so I just want to make sure we’re all clear about living together.” There was a pause, enough that Yoongi thought Namjoon had finished until he spoke again, “Yes Taehyung?”
Yoongi covered his mouth, stifling his giggle. Taehyung must’ve raised his hand, a habit him and Jungkook had around the older ones.
“Yoongi hyung isn’t here.” He pointed out.
“Yes I know.” Namjoon replied and Yoongi didn’t have to look to know he was being impatient.
“Should I go get him?” Taehyung proceeded to ask.
“No, I purposely wanted to talk to everyone without him.” Yoongi frowned at that.
“If we’re having a group meeting, hyung should be here too.” Taehyung continued.
“It’s about hyung,” Namjoon said quickly, not giving Taehyung any more room to cut in. Yoongi held his breath. About him? They’re going to talk about him? Why? “As we all know, hyung is the only omega here. There’s a chance he could be stuck with all alphas, and I want it to be very clear that it’s our job to make him comfortable sinc- what Taehyung ?”
“Hyung doesn’t like to be looked down upon.” Taehyung commented. Good Taehyung. Yoongi taught him well.
“ I’m not -“ Namjoons voice cracked and he cleared his throat - Yoongi was sure the others were holding back their laughter too - “I would never do that. I’m not saying to protect him and watch over him like crazy, I’m saying, you know, there’s going to come a time of need for alphas but hyung is off limits. He’s not here for any of you, he’s here for himself and our music. Everyone understand? Becau - Taehyung you don’t need to raise your hand every time.”
“But I don’t want to interrupt.” Taehyung said shyly.
“You still - what is it?” Namjoon had some cooling off to do after this.
“Do you think we’ll all be alphas? A group with six alphas and one omega?” Was the question.
“It’s a possibility. There’s only four of us left. Whether it’s six or four or only two, we don’t treat Yoongi hyung any differently than the rest of us, got it?” From the silence that followed, Yoongi assumed they were all nodding back.
So Namjoon was trying to make sure what happened before didn't happen again. Yoongi already knew it wouldn’t. He trusted these members, they were going to be together for a long time anyways. Namjoon had nothing to worry about.
***
I wanted to take this opportunity at the end to explain a bit about the characters upbringings to make more sense on how they’ll be:
Yoongi: omega
Family: beta dad, beta mom, beta older brother
Since there is no alpha in the immediate family, his parents don’t give him much attention, instead relying on his elder brother to succeed. Due to that, he only knows how neutral betas are, never learning much about alphas or omegas.
Seokjin: alpha
Family: alpha dad, omega mom, alpha older brother
He grew up in a traditional household. He saw how his dad treated his mom and yearns to do the same to his partner. Basically taught that every omega is a potential mate and therefore must take care of them and show them he’s the best qualified alpha.
Hoseok: alpha (eventually)
Family: beta dad, omega mom, alpha older sister
Knows perfect amount of each secondary gender. His parents don’t care what he presents as, as long as he's happy. Has that attitude towards the group.
Namjoon: alpha (eventually)
Family: alpha dad, omega mom, omega younger sister
He’s never cared for secondary genders. He has the stereotypical parents for it but was too busy writing lyrics to pay attention to how an alpha or omega are supposed to act. Doesn’t know much about that kind of stuff.
Jimin: alpha
Family: omega dad, alpha mom, unpresented younger brother
Pushed to be a strong, dependent alpha before he even presented. His parents want him to find a nice omega to bring home asap even though he’s not ready to mate yet.
Taehyung: alpha (eventually)
Family: beta mom, beta mom, unpresented younger sister and brother
His moms made sure he was taught well about alphas and omegas for the sake of him and his siblings. He can sometimes view them a little stereotypical and find it strange when alphas and omegas don’t fit into their standards.
Jungkook: alpha (eventually)
Family: alpha dad, alpha mom, beta older brother
His parents want him to focus on his studies and training before thinking about his status and they’ve always been that way. Alpha or beta, school must come first. Is clueless about most of that stuff too.
