Chapter Text
A cool summer wind passed through the air, carrying puffs of dandelion fuzz as it made its way to Amity Blight. She welcomed its soothing presence, and in return, it kissed her tear-stained cheeks and whispered sweet promises of a better future in her ears.
Sobs were still trying to fight their way out of her chest from the verbal beating she took earlier, but she didn't let it escape, instead taking another deep breath of the crisp air.
The sun had set many hours ago, but she could still manage to make out the garden below, the silhouettes of the picture-perfect rose bushes. The telephone lines above Amity cut dark lines across the night sky, marring the view only slightly.
Amity tugged her robe tighter around her, it was getting chilly outside, so she should probably head in soon. Just as she turned to do just that, the motion-sensing lights flickered on. She raised her arm to block her eyes from the bright beam. She wondered why only now it was turning on, given she had been on her balcony for quite some time now.
In her peripheral vision, she managed to glimpse the silhouettes of a bat swooping down and landing on her balcony. When she opened her eyes, however, there was a girl sitting on the ledge of her balcony.
Amity took a step back instinctively but was in too much shock to do much else. It certainly didn't help that this girl--15 if she had to guess-- was very pretty.
Curly brown wolf cut, sienna skin, a pronounced cupid's bow, and big dark eyes that peered at her curiously below a set of gorgeous lashes. She certainly didn't look like she would be freezing anytime soon, in a thick purple hoodie and ripped black jeans.
Amity was so busy admiring the mysterious stranger that she didn't even realize they asked her a question until they repeated it.
"Why do you look so sad?"
Amity blinked in surprise. the stranger blinked back at her, seemingly somewhat amused by the whole interaction.
"I'm just tired, that's all," Amity replied, struggling to keep from stumbling over her words to no avail. Her tone was defensive, and for good reason. She wasn't about to go blab about her problems to some stranger, no matter how gorgeous they were.
The girl shrugged, sticking their hands in their pockets. "That's fine, you don't have to tell me. I just thought you could use some cheering up in all." Suddenly she perked up. "Say, do you like knock-knock jokes?"
"Sure." Suspicion littered Amity's tone, but she wanted to know where this would go.
"Ok, knock-knock."
"Who's there?"
"Lena."
"Lena who?"
"Lena lil closer and I'll tell you another joke."
Amity was unimpressed, even as the girl looked rather pleased with herself.
"Ok, but seriously, who are you?"
A grin, mischievous and playful accompanied by another "Knock-knock,” was her only answer.
Amity sighed but played along. "Who's there?"
"A little old lady."
"A little old lady who?"
"Wow, I didn't know you could yodel!"
At that, a snort escaped Amity.
"See! we're already getting to know each other! Who needs introductions, amiright?" Building on her streak, the girl kept going. "Knock-knock.”
"Who's there?" Amity asks, fighting back a smile this time.
"Ash."
"Ash who?"
"Sounds like you've got a cold there, " Amity knew there was no stopping the grin that broke free, nor the tumble of giggles interrupted by occasional snorts."How long you been out here, Blight?"
"Wait, how do you know my name?" She paused, a bit alarmed.
"Hello, it's all over the damn place." The girl gestured at the gate at the beginning of the property. Sure enough, proudly displayed, was the surname Blight.
"Alright, fair enough."
"Alright, one last knock-knock joke, and then I gotta go." Before AMity could ask go where, they were already launching their next joke. "Knock-knock.”
"Who's there?"
"Luz."
Well, that was different.
"Luz who?"
"It's me! Luz! I'm here to give you all my love and affection!"
With that, the girl leaned back on the ledge of the balcony and plummeted down, down, down. Amity covered her mouth and ran over, leaning over the carved balcony to try and see where her mystery girl had gone. She strained her eyes and begged them to adjust quickly, but all she could see was darkness.
Suddenly, a whirl of motion rocketed past Amity, she jumped back and looked up to see a fluffy bat almost...smirking at her.
A very, very familiar smirk, she coulda sworn she had just seen on a girl in an oversized hoodie and ripped jeans sitting on her balcony, telling her knock-knock jokes.
"Are you a vampire?" Amity blurted out. The question sounded dumb even to herself, but she honestly could not think of a better explanation for what she just witnessed.
Luz laughed, the sound being quite alien coming from a bat. "Nah, I'm not into that blood thing. See ya!".
"Wait, when will I see you again?" Amity called out.
In a second, Luz was back, but not for long. "You’ve gotten to ask all the questions tonight, Blight. I'll see you when I see you, kay?"
Amity nodded dumbly.
"Oh, and one more thing? You should start wearing thicker clothing when you're out late. You're looking a little flushed.”
With that, the not-vampire took off into the night.
Amity stood there for a while, trying to process what might have been the most unbelievable night of her life.
Trying to ignore the sun beginning to peek out from the horizon, Amity made her way back inside and through her covers over her head, thinking of the girl with the wide smile and knock-knock jokes to spare.
