Work Text:
You walk in the cafeteria, mindlessly headed for your usual table where you sit with your usual group, consisting of your best friends Sidney and Tatum as well as the three pests you also have convinced yourself to call friends: Billy, Stu and Randy. Each of the three is annoying in their own way but it’s not like you and the two girls are perfect angles either. At least Billy and Stu served as your own personal entertainment with their poor attempts at charming you.
You aren’t sure when this one-upping match between them began although you’re pretty sure is a result of a bet they’ve placed, but you’ve had your fun with their hopelessness at wooing you, roasting the shit out of them in the process.
Today is no different.
“Good morning, Y/N.“ Billy greets you as you sit down next to Tatum.
“It was, but then I saw your face, Loomis.“ You say, getting a laugh out of everyone around the table except the blond guy who is looking at you with amusement and amazement.
Randy, who nearly choked on his drink at your words, makes a sizzling noise forcing the boy to roll his eyes, giving you the opportunity to look away from his captivating gaze. As much of a dumbass as he is, you’ll admit that he’s far from bad-looking.
“Damn Y/N, mean as always, I see.“ Billy comments but this time you don’t fall into his trap and just keep looking forward.
“And looking good as always.“ Stu, who unfortunately is sitting in front of you winks at you, earning himself an annoyed eye-roll.
“You see, the ‘goodness’ of my appearance, and of anyone’s really, is relative and it’s based on what you’re comparing it to. For example, if you’re comparing it to what you see in the mirror every morning, even a homeless person could be considered attractive.“ You retort too casually for the sting of the words you used.
This time even Billy didn’t stop himself in time before his face twisted in shock. Stu pretends to shoot himself in the head and falls limp back in his seat, adding to the comedy of the situation which gets a laugh out of you too, The ‘dead’ man doesn’t let that laugh slip him by, as he opens his eyes and winks at you like he’s accomplished something.
Boy, is he wrong.
“They got you even worse, bud.“ He says to Stu who’s come back to life after his performance.
“At least I got a laugh out of ‘em. Haven’t seen you do that yet.“ Stu retorts, a new sense of pride dancing in his tone that has Sid and Tate rolling their eyes while yours remain narrowed, examining his every move for your own entertainment. This guy is a one man walking circus, no one can blame you for exploiting that especially when you’re practically a bet between him and his best friend.
“And he never will.“ You say, shooting the accused a sassy glance before you take a sip of your soda that Randy had started sipping on after he finished his own. You smacked him away though.
“Oh come on, darling, why don’t you just admit that you like me and get this over with?“ He muses, trapping you with his captivating gaze once again.
This time around, Sidney comes to your rescue with a theatrical gasp, “Oh, the audacity!”
You exchange a quick smirk with her before turning back to the blond, “And why don’t you just take a shower?“
“Why don’t we take one together.“ Once again, the audacity he has to wink at you. Unfortunately, even Tatum and Sid are left speechless by this smooth one-liner that almost has you retaliating. Almost.
“I bet you’re not a sight for sore eyes under all that.“ You raise an eyebrow at him, eyeing him from head to toe in his casual clothes, a pair of old jeans, a shirt with some band on it and a jean jacket over top of it. You don’t believe your own words as they leave your lips, but no one’s fact-checking your claims, nor are you hooked up to a lie detector so you get away with it. This game isn’t about being truthful, it’s about who wins. If you have to play dirty to do so, that’s exactly what you’re gonna do. And that’s exactly what you’re doing.
“Wanna skip on over to the bathroom so I we can confirm or deny this statement of yours?“ His eyebrow rise is a lot cockier than yours and you don’t even attempt to beat him at it - it’s his own game after all. Him and Stu started it and you initially started playing along for shits and giggles. But now you’re determined to win so a lot’s at stake.
“Or we can spare you the embarrassment, Loomis.“ You tell him, pulling off your best poker face.
He leans over to you across the table, causing for your body to react instinctively and lean in as well. You catch yourself mid-motion though and stop immediately. “Or we can make out?“ He suggests smugly.
You hate the way his words make you blush, you hate how your heart speeds up. You hate how the same thing happens when Stu makes some half-baked joke that still manages to make you laugh. You hate seeing how happy your laughter makes him, like I said earlier, it makes him feel accomplished. He loves making you laugh and smile, he loves being the source of your happiness. Billy, on the other hand, loves being the reason behind the blush to your cheeks, the discomfort in your seat and the tightness in you chest. He likes putting you in a state of comfortable discomfort with his presence and words. He loves seeing you flustered and in a blushing frenzy.
And you hate that you love the effect they both have on you. The perfect balance between Stu’s genuine and wholesome intentions and Billy’s unholy, downright devilish ones.
“Guys, guys, please, have you ever considered that Y/N’s been rejecting you cause they’re secretly, probably, most definitely crushing on me?“ Randy speaks up, deciding to throw his unnecessary two cents into the ring.
The thought is so ridiculous to the point where not a single person present at the table laughs, they just look at Randy with the identical ‘disappointed parent’ look.
“When you put it like that...“, you turn to Billy, causing his attention to be devoted to you once again, “That make out session doesn’t sound so bad.“
The cocky smirk is replaced by a genuine and quite adorable smile you rarely get to see on Billy’s face but that’s exactly what makes you want to treasure each time you see it that much more. You cherish that smile and love being the one to cause its appearance on the boy’s face.
While Randy’s complaining in the background, you turn to Stu, running a hand through his hair, “You can join too, pretty boy. That way neither of you wins the bet.”
“What bet?“ They ask in unison, each equally as confused as the other.
Out of the corner of your eye you see how involved Sid and Tatum are in the exchange, mostly cause they are more than willing to kick Billy and Stu’s asses if this really is a prank or a bet. But judging by the genuineness of the bafflement in their eyes, you are starting to doubt that possibility. “Didn’t you guys bet on me or something? Like, whoever can woo me first or get in my pants?“
“No!“ Once again they exclaim in unison, but this time Stu strays from the synchronization when he continues talking, “We are pieces of shit, but not that kind of pieces of shit, Y/N. How dare you think so little of us?!“
“No, really.“ Billy takes it more seriously, clearly both worried that they gave off the wrong impression and offended that you’d actually think so little of them like Stu said, “There’s no bet at play here. You’re just cool and we like cool people so....and you’re also pretty, and smart and stuff and yeah....you’re cool. We like you.“
“Aww, thanks!“ You will admit, it’s a relief to know at least not everything of what you’ve been dealing with was an act or a charade from their end. But you wouldn’t be you if you didn’t stick it to them for their dumbassery, “I guess the make out session is cancelled then.“
“Oh fuck off!“
“How’s that fair?!“
