Too Good to Be True

Summary:

Lots of Viktor's inner thoughts upon waking up from a deep sleep & you getting caught admiring your sleep-ridden man, leading to some cute banter with him.

Work Text:

Bright rays of sunlight poured in from the window and much to his dismay, there was not much that Viktor could do about it. His nights have become day and the other way around. However, he never slept for long hours. Due to his excessively work heavy routine, he tends to minimize his sleeping hours so he could benefit from every waking second he could have in order to focus on his research.

He would have loved to rely on you when it came to this. Waking him when he slept over 4 hours, 5 hours would be close to sacrilege despite his knowledge that he physically was in need of so much more than that but the stubborn scientist in him always demanded more time be spent on actual 'science' and not on the other necessities of life.

Too bad for him, you did not entertain his requests or even tolerate his behaviour. You often pulling him back in bed and trapping him in your arms, going as far as to make up excuses which would ultimately force him to stay. To say the truth, your excuses were no good, yet despite the fact that he doesn't have any qualms saying 'no' to you when needed, he can't take the look of sadness on your face, especially when you end up worrying about his humble self.
And here he was.

Groggily fighting his eyes open as the cool light of day assaulted his senses yet warmed his skin so deliciously, he groaned as his consciousness slowly returned to him, along with all of the racing thoughts that usually accompanied it. A list of all the different items on his mental checklist enumerated right before his half-opened mind's eye.

1- A dreaded meeting with Jayce about another new project that he needed to fight him on.
2 - A much expected earful from Heimerdinger about some unexpected mutation in a species he had experimented: a result that his superior feared and anticipated would occur. But Viktor had everything in control, just dealing with the fussiness of the experienced scientist was such an unnecessarily necessary predicament he somehow always had to face.
3- All the actual work he wanted to do in his research and experiments.

His hands on either side of the pillow fisted the soft fabric he laid his cheek on as he turned his head slowly and squished his face into the plush fluffiness, breathing in deeply and groaning out a loud exhale. Why couldn't the world just be peaceful? His definition of peaceful, at least. Leave him to his own devices, literally and figuratively. In that very moment, he had absolutely no idea what time it was and on that day, he would make the exception of not even checking it or caring about it. For his own peace of mind.

Whatever was going to chase him was going to come get him wherever he went anyways.
Pushing his face off the bed, he propped his elbows on the pillow, fingers brushing away the loose strands of chocolate that fell before his eyesight, his thoughts chasing away his drowsiness as the slow realization of you lying next to him all along settled in. Turning his gaze to the side, he was met with your own, bright eyes crinkling at the edges as a soft smile drew itself so beautifully across your face.

"Good afternoon, sleepyhead." You greeted him, scooting closer to him and reaching one hand up to replicate the same motions he had done to keep his hair away, but letting your hand linger far too long, only to pull him towards you simply to plant a chaste kiss upon his lips.

"Good morning, my love." He tilted his head as you slid your hand down to cup his cheek, his amber eyes unable to tear themselves away from you, your smile so radient in its serenity that it made his heart ache with overflowing happiness. "You look as beautiful as ever." He couldn't help but follow up with a loving statement. It was the truth, no ounce of flattery in it.

"Sometimes-" You sighed, rubbing your thumb softly on his cheek, your soft tone drawing him into an ambient sphere of love that only belonged to the two of you. "-I feel like you're too good to be true."

Lying back down on the bed, he wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling your body to his and pressing his forehead to yours, the warmth of his sleeping body wafting like waves as he revelled in the coziness of your embrace. "Such a shame that you are engaged to be married with a man who is not real then." He said, sleepy snark dripping from his voice.

Lifting an eyebrow as your sharp gaze flew to him, you hummed in mock agreement. "The fact of the matter is that my imaginary fiance is gonna have to sign up for lessons on how to take a compliment from his future partner." You grinned at him as he smiled sheepishly, the truth of your words actually sinking in.
"I think it would be wise if I work on my acting skills." He mused out loud, leaning in to press a kiss to your forehead in the process and chuckling at your confusion. Your expression always spoke volumes, which made it so much easier for Viktor to understand you, rather than rely on contradicting and imbued social cues. "It's a simple equation I've come to discover."

"Oh?" You pulled away from him so you could get a better look at him. "Do enlighten me, Sir."

He cleared his throat, rolling his shoulders back as if he were to straighten his back although he was still lying down. Force of habit.

"Hypothetically, factor number 1: if I were to pretend to sleep and factor number 2: let's say, you happened to be there and watching me. The only result of adding these two factors together would lead to one universal answer." He lifted his index, emphasizing on his words, the smirk on his lips evident as he explained the equation he had in mind.

"... which is?" You urged him, simply playing along with his game as your fiance's playfulness wasn't a usual occurrence yet it was an appearance that you always greeted.

"Would you really like to know?" The teasing lilt in his tone was too evident, Viktor was clearly enjoying himself.
"No. You stink of sleep." You clicked your tongue, sliding off the bed as quickly as you could, fake glaring at him as you stood on the edge of the bed with your hands on your hips. "Go wash the drool off your face and then we can talk."

"You say that yet you just kissed this face." He chuckled lightly as you rolled your eyes at him, joining in the laughter as he sat up and crawled to you, wrapping his arms around you with a sleepy smile adorning his face as he professed the truth. "A lot more love from you. That's the answer... and it's all I want."
