Bucky and Sam were in a good place in their relationship. They were both actively talking to each other and dealing with any issues head-on, like adults.
Mrs. Chin was proud and gave Sam the closest thing to a smile he's ever seen on her face.
They were happy, they fucked like rabbits and Sam was almost always sore. It's like he was making up for all the years he wasn't having sex in the past few months.
But Bucky had been acting weird for the last few days. He would either be super affectionate or mope around and give Sam one word answers. It was irritating but Sam thought if his alpha had something to say, he would. Maybe he was just going through a funk. That's understandable, Sam's been there.
-
"Who the hell is that guy, anyway?" Bucky snarled.
Steve was trying very hard not to laugh but seeing Sam talking to Rhodey was making the alpha act like a jealous mistress.
It was hilarious. Not just because it was ridiculous but because every time Sam caught Bucky's eye he'd blush and turn back. Like he didn't want Bucky to know he was in love with him, like Bucky wasn't actively courting him.
Steve and Wanda were sitting on the couch with a grumbling Bucky. Steve kept assuring him he was being paranoid and massaged Wanda's feet.
Sam walked over and sat down next to Bucky.
Now that Steve knew, it was easy to see that Sam couldn't scent any of them, he just curled under Bucky's arm and kissed his chin without taking Steve's amusement or Wanda's worry into account.
Bucky growled and pulled him in tighter.
"What's gotten into you, Buck? You look flushed, you okay?" Sam asked with his brown eyes filled with concern.
Bucky cleared his throat and kissed Sam. A little too passionately for Steve but whatever.
"I'm fine, 'mega. Just tired. I think I'm gonna lie down." He got up and left with that, leaving a hurt and confused Sam behind.
Steve could scent his sadness, poor guy. He hated seeing Sam sad, it pulled at his heart.
"Hey, Sammy, it's okay. He's just a little confused, he'll come around."
"Confused about me?" Sam asked slowly.
"No! I mean, kinda-- but it's not--" Steve babbled but Sam just got up and left, leaving a bitter scent of sorrow behind.
He was about to follow and assure him when Wanda smacked him up the head.
"Idiot, Steve. He probably thinks Bucky wants to break up with him."
"Noooooo."
"Yeeeeees. Idiot. Let them handle it, you've done enough." She said and flew out of the room.
Damn it, Steve.
-
Sam was avoiding Bucky. It was obvious. Every time Bucky walked into a room, Sam would give off hurt and sadness in his scent, make some bullshit excuse and flee. It had happened twice in the last two hours and Bucky had had enough.
He cornered Sam in his bedroom because the omega was predictable as fuck to him and was burrowed in Bucky's bed, surrounded by his clothes with Alpine sitting near his head.
It would've been adorable if not for the undercurrent of sadness that Sam was emanating.
"Sammy?" Bucky called out softly, making the omega jolt up.
"Um, hey, Buck. Sorry I was just--, I'll go. Sorry."
"Why? You gotta go meet Rhodey?" Bucky snarled because of course he did. What did Rhodey have that Bucky didn't? Well, that's a stupid question. Rhodes was a hero, he was a decorated soldier who was smart and understanding. Much better partner for Sam than Bucky.
Shit.
"What, why would I go see, Rhodey? The meeting in DC isn't for another week and we already hashed out the details. Did he say something to you?"
"No." Bucky felt guilty, he was obviously reading into this. Paranoid. Steve was right (He never thought he'd say or think that).
"Then why would I go see, Rhodey?" Sam asked and scrunched his face up in confusion. He got that from Bucky, he looked adorable.
"I don't know, I just thought you were into him or something." Bucky mumbled.
Sam groaned and got up. "If you wanna break up with me just say that, Bucky. Don't be cruel, I don't deserve that. God, what is wrong with you?!" Sam said and walked past him and out of the apartment.
Break up? What the hell was he talking about?! Bucky tried to follow but once again, Sam locked him out of his apartment.
Great.
-
Sam didn't understand how this happened. They were talking about pups last week, now they were gonna break up?! Sam wouldn't recover from this, he knew it. It would just hurt him and probably make him his old self-destructive self.
God, he wished he had taken at least a sweater of Bucky's, he couldn't scent it but it would give him comfort. He was an omega after all.
-
Bucky was sitting outside Sam's apartment because he couldn't get in. Naturally, he fell backwards when Sam opened the door. His omega's eyes were puffy and red. He was obviously not expecting Bucky and stared at him.
"I don't wanna break up, sweetheart. Where'd you get that stupid idea?" Bucky was just talking to Sam from where he was splayed out on the floor. It wasn't ideal but he figured it was best to talk before the omega slammed the door closed again.
"Then why'd you say that shit, alpha?" Sam and knelt near his head.
Bucky sat up and pulled Sam to his lap. It was a little weird given that they were almost the same height and built like tanks but Bucky didn't care. He loved having Sam in his lap.
"I was being stupid, I'm sorry. But I never said anything about breaking up, honey. Why'd you say that?" Bucky asked as he kissed Sam's neck. The omega melted into him, burrowing in his arms. Bucky was relieved.
Losing Sam would kill him, he knew it. The omega was his home and the thought of a world without him was his definition of Hell.
"Steve said you were confused about me." Sam mumbled, clearly embarassed.
"You're the only thing I have ever been sure of in my entire life and Steve is a moron. Why would you ever listen to him?"
"I don't know, you were being weird these past few days so it made sense at the time. I don't know, Buck, I'm sorry." Sam said and kissed his cheek.
"I'm sorry too, sweetheart, should've just told you how I was feeling." Bucky said and pulled Sam in closer.
He was also extremely smug about the fact that he fucked Sam in the hallway. He's always wanted to but Sam always said it was weird.
Silver linings and all that.
They stayed knotted and cuddled there until they had to feed Alpine, who was so thrilled at Sam's return that she wouldn't leave his side all night; falling asleep near his chest. Bucky took only thirty two pictures of his two sweethearts sleeping.
