My Protector

Summary:

"I've been hired to protect you, Miss Liones," Meliodas said in a low tone, his grip on my arm tightening. I leaned closer to him, his cologne intoxicating. I didn't miss the falter in his composure.

"I don't need protecting."

The spring sun felt heavenly on my exposed arms as we sat outside in our favorite hangout spot - Sinful Cafe. We'd been sitting inside these past few months because of the colder weather, but today, given the welcoming sun, we decided to sit on the rooftop.

The varnished lattice fence was laced in dark green vines. We sat at clover-colored garden chairs with a matching table, which was half shaded by a white umbrella. We had a perfect view of the bustling city below, the occasional honk of the odd car and ding of a bike's bell adding to the chatter around us.

Sinful Cafe was everyone's favorite hangout spot.

I couldn't help closing my eyes and taking a deep breath in through my nose, the sweet aroma of citrus and coffee filling my lungs.

"Thank you," Merlin purred at the waitress as she set down our pint of lemon-lime and bitters, condensation layering the outside of the pink jug. As Diane poured our drinks into tall glasses, I sparked up another conversation.

"How's King and Escanor?"

The girls both giggled at my question, blushes creeping up onto their cheeks. I stirred my drink with a black straw once Diane set it in front of me, awaiting their responses with a raised brow.

"King's been great, he took me on a date to a super pretty lookout the other day. He's so sweet," Diane swooned, batting her eyelashes at the memory.

"If you think that's sweet, imagine being taken to a lantern festival out of town," Merlin sighed, taking a long sip from her drink. Diane clicked her tongue and puffed out her cheeks with a frown.

"Hmph, no fair," she grumbled. Merlin snickered before her honey eyes landed on me.

"When are you gonna find a lover, Y/N?"

I blew out an exaggerated sigh and rolled my eyes, a smile plastered on my lips.

"I don't know, I've been on a few dates but none of them really sparked anything," I said, taking a sip from my straw. The cold beverage tasted heavenly.

"You should give that Gilthunder guy another shot, I think he really liked you," Diane whined. I scoffed at her.

"You cannot be serious Di, his name is literally Gilthunder, and he has pink hair!" I laughed, Merlin chuckling as well. Diane rolled her eyes with a smile.

"You're gonna stay a virgin forever," Diane warned. I watched her big purple eyes scan around us before widening. She nodded towards whatever caught her eye, a smirk growing on her lips.

"Take a look at him," she said lowly, which made Merlin and I follow her gaze. Behind us, a few tables away was a big, muscly guy with olive skin and long black hair. I took the time to observe him, particularly his muscly arms and how he looked wearing his black turtle neck.

I turned back around to face Diane.

"Not interested," I said simply with a shrug. She almost gasped as I took another sip nonchalantly.

"You have zero taste in men," she commented, earning an agreeing nod from Merlin.

"I agree, what even is your type?" Merlin asked as she pulled a small handheld mirror from her purse. She opened her loose powder and began tapping some onto her nose.

"Let's see," I started, adjusting in my seat slightly to glance around the rooftop. After a bit, my eyes landed on a guy about two meters away from us. His hair was on the shaggier side, but you could tell it was clean and brushed at least. Big, green eyes with thick lashes gazed down at his phone as he sipped a coke.

"That guy there is probably the most attractive guy here," I said quietly, not wanting to risk him hearing me. He was wearing a white button-up and black pants, a suit jacket on his chair. As if he could sense my gaze, he lifted his head and his eyes flitted to mine momentarily. I held his gaze until he looked back down at his phone, unphased.

"Oh," Merlin purred, catching my attention. I raised an eyebrow at her questioningly. She met my gaze and laughed.

"Kidding, I only have eyes for Escanor," she sighed, stirring her ice in her drink. I made an 'mhm' before finishing the last of my drink. I adjusted my seat to fit more under the umbrella as the sun began to burn my shoulders.

I was wearing a yellow flowy sundress, which nicely complimented my skin tone. Dainty flats were on my feet, which I kept dangling under the table. A few golden rings clung to my long fingers, which I fiddled with as the girls started talking about a party they wanted to host.

After a few more hours, I waved off Diane and Merlin as they stepped into their separate limos and sped off down the street. I looked down at my phone and cleared the notification from my own limo driver. I hated being treated like royalty sometimes.

I clutched my shoulder bag closer to my side as I began walking towards my estate, admiring the clouds that rolled over the purple and pink sky. A few pigeons flew overhead before perching on a powerline as I walked further away from the bustling streets.

As the sky turned a dark violet, I had made it to the isolated Liones Estate. Huge pine trees grew along the cobblestoned pathway that was dimly lit from aging lanterns, thick bushes on the side of the path furthest from the road.

It was starting to get darker quickly, something that always lingered from winter - early nights. The cold air nipped at my exposed arms, causing me to rub my fingers along the skin in a feeble attempt to get rid of the goosebumps. I could see the lion statues on either side of my driveway as I rounded the bend.

The road lit up in front of me as a car approached from behind, and I waited for it to pass so I crossed the road. But when it slowed down, my heartbeat began to spike. And when it stopped right next to me, my heart rose to my throat.

The door flung open and a large silhouette dismantled the vehicle before rushing at me like a bull. A cry left my mouth as the figure rammed me into the bushes behind me, roughly handling my upper arms in an attempt to stop me from getting away.

I brought my knee up in an attempt to injure him, only for him to grip my knee forcefully and pin it to his hip. I began to scream and claw at his face, but choked as his forehead bashed mine. My vision turned blurry as his large rough hand gripped my throat, squeezing it. I weakly scratched at his hand as his other one undid his belt. Just before he could do the inevitable, more headlights came up the road.

"Shit," I heard the man growl, his eyes flickering down the road. I inspected his face as my vision started going fuzzy around the edges. His large purple eyes flitted back to my face before he dropped me to the ground and kicked a violent blow into my rib. I screamed out in pain again, despite the burning in my throat as I tried to greedily gasp for air.

The car sped off down the street as I laid on the cold concrete, my breaths coming out in short pants as the pain from my throat, rib, and head intensified. The driver who saved me squealed to a stop, and I was grateful to find it was my limo driver.

I watched Chandler hobble over as fast as he could, but my eyes shut tenderly and darkness enveloped me.

My consciousness came back before my vision did.

I could hear my heartbeat spike on the monitor beside me, which gave away that I was at the hospital. The familiar smell of sanitizer flooded my nose, causing me to wince as I took a deep breath.

Why did my throat hurt so bad...

Memories of what happened then hit me like a truck and I had no choice but to open my eyes. They scanned the room as my heartbeat intensified more.

"Can we get a nurse?" A voice boomed before a pair of hands clutched the side of my bed. My wide eyes flickered to them then trailed up to the man they belonged to. I heard the monitor relax slightly as I took in the familiar face of my father.

The door was slammed open and before I could turn my head toward the sound, two nurses and a doctor rushed inside. They all visibly calmed once they saw I was okay.

"Ah, Miss Liones, it's great to see you're awake," The doctor greeted with a small smile, clicking the back of his pen on the clipboard that was in his other hand. I nodded at him and turned my attention to the nurse who painfully adjusted the drip in my hand.

After a few more alterations to my setup, the nurses dispersed and the doctor continued speaking.

"It appears you've experienced some slight trauma to the front of your head, and a painful blow to the ribs. Neither of them is anything to worry about, besides some bruising. That's the same for your throat," he gestured to my neck. I mindlessly reached up to touch it as he started chatting with my father.

After a while, the doctor left my father and me to our own devices.

"Y/N," I heard his low voice say, causing me to glance at him. His white hair and beard were scruffy, which was an extremely rare sight considering my father's position. I inspected his frowning face as he sighed.

"Stop going against me," he said.

"I wasn't going against you, I just wanted to walk home," I barely croaked, reaching for the paper cup on the nightstand. His dark eyes turned to me as I wiped my top lip.

"Do not give me excuses, Y/N. We both know you hate using the resources provided to you, even if it's something as small as a limo driver," he almost groaned as he rubbed his temples. I felt my head hang low in regret.

I usually ditch my limo driver, Chandler. My father is right - I do hate using the stuff he provides me with. But that's only because of how he achieves them.

"It won't happen again," I whispered, my thoughts of last night coming back.

If Chandler hadn't found me when he did, who knows what would've happened to me.

"I know it won't because I'm getting you a bodyguard," he concluded, standing up and clapping his hands together. I jolted at the sudden sound before a frown caressed my features.

"I don't want or need a bodyguard," I said quickly. The last thing I want is some annoying person following me around.

"He's already been hired, he's at the house," he said with a small chuckle, obviously thinking he'd won. I grumbled as he walked out of my room, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
