The Lettuce Cake

Summary:

It's Ciel's birthday and Sebastian wants to surprise him with a special treat.

Notes:

Work Text:

Today was no ordinary day for Sebastian, no. It was a very special day that required very special preparations.

Ciel Phantomhive’s birthday!

The fuzzy grey little molcar was still snoozing, wheels tucked underneath him like a cat loaf, when Sebastian peeked into his room.

Good, thought Sebastian.

He still had time.

He admired his snoring little master for one more moment, glassy red beads fixated on those fluffy slate locks, before trundling out of the room to get to work.

He had plans.

He was going to make Ciel his very favourite lettuce cake . But this one would be so much bigger, and better, and tastier than ever before. He just needed to run some last minute errands.

He tried to be as quiet as he could to avoid waking his master, but his wheels scooted slightly against the polished hallway. He stopped and swivelled his ears, mouth agape, listening intently for any signs of his master awakening, but just heard another squeaky little snore.

His beloved must be in a deep sleep. He deserved a good rest after all he had been through.

Sebastian whizzed off on his way to the market. His list was simple, tomatoes, carrots, and most importantly, lettuce. The most vital ingredient in a lettuce cake.

As he sped along the road he thought about how happy his little molcar would be when he saw that cake stacked high. He closed his eyes, lost in the fantasy before…

BUMP!

The butler molcar squeaked in surprise and shook his head. The red molcar in front of him that he had collided with turned to shoot him a dirty glance.

Ah, a traffic jam. This was unexpected. And it was a long one too!

Sebastian stood on his wheel tips to peer over the line, it seemed to stretch for miles! Whatever could be causing such a jam? At this rate, he’d never get the lettuce in time.

He stomped his woolly wheels in frustration, and crystal tears gathered in his eyes as he thought about how sad his little molcar would be to wake up to no Sebastian, and no lettuce cake. On his birthday.

He wouldn’t let that happen.

He’d get that lettuce in time no matter what it took!

Sebastian revved his engine and lurched forward, hoisting himself on top of the molcar in front of him, who protested with a shriek. Sebastian ran along the line, stepping on their heads as he went. Each gave him a frustrated look and a squeak of disapproval as he cut his way across the traffic.

This was most definitely against the rules. But Sebastian didn’t care. Breaking rules for his beloved was nothing new to him, he’d already broken the rules of his nature by experiencing love as a demon, pesky molcar laws were nothing.

After a few minutes, Sebastian reached the end of the line, one last step on the broken down molcar at the front, and he was on his way! He rushed off to the market and skidded to a halt when he sensed that familiar smell of fresh veggies. He squeaked with delight as he approached the stall, and picked out only the best quality items.

The juiciest and plumpest tomato,

the crunchiest carrot,

and the greenest of lettuce.

Sebastian was relieved when he arrived home. Making the cake would be the easy part, he’d done it so many times before. But hiding the birthday preparations from the young master until they were ready was the worry playing on Sebastian’s mind.

The servants were hanging the decorations up on the wall, everything was coming along quite nicely! Mey-Rin dropped several plates in the process, which was rather odd considering none of the birthday decorations called for dining ware, but it was par for the course in the Phantomhive manor, and nothing Sebastian couldn’t deal with.

Sebastian placed the finished cake right in the centre of the large dining table. It was a beautiful sight! Neatly sliced tomatoes piled high, with lettuce leaves shimmering like emeralds, shredded carrot lacing each layer, and to top it all off, a heart shaped slice of lettuce atop the cake. The perfect sign of affection towards the smaller molcar he loved so dearly.

Sebastian admired his work. He knew the felted little Phantomhive wouldn’t care much for the party and having to socialize with the guests, that part was customary and just to uphold their reputation.

Sebastian was confident, however, that the sight of such a delicious and special treat would be sure to put a smile on Ciel’s adorable face.

Sebastian was about to head to Ciel’s room to awaken him with a nice, hot cup of tea, when he heard wheel-steps behind him. The weary little Lord had awoken without him and was making his way slowly downstairs. Felted eyelids blinking sleepily. He let out a large yawn before opening those beads wide and taking in the sight before him.

An expression of wonder spread across his face as he examined the lettuce cake on the table, completely ignoring the decorations and the excited little Lizzy squeaking beside him.

He wiggled like a cat about to pounce on its prey, and leapt across the room, crashing right into the massive cake and toppling it to the floor. The guests let out frightened yelps and fled from the room as tomato chunks flew in every direction.

Sebastian beeped in shock, all that work for the cake to be destroyed?

But Ciel seemed happy, catching the veggies as they rained down and crunching excitedly.

One last lettuce leaf, the heart shaped one that had sat right at the top, fluttered down. Sebastian walked towards it, ready to catch, and as he bit the leaf, he looked down and noticed that Ciel had caught the other side.

Both cars munched the tasty treat contentedly. Slowly, there was less and less leaf, and the two grew closer and closer, until eventually there was only a tiny piece left.

As Sebastian and Ciel finished nibbling the last bite, their lips touched together, and Ciel leaned into the kiss.

As they parted, the smaller molcar smiled softly. A subtle form of praise. Sebastian was overjoyed. This may not be what he had expected, but it turned out to be a wonderful day for both of them!
