This fic is just a fluffy slow-burn with two horny idiots for main characters, enjoy

Notes:

Just wanted to mention that I'm American and my experiences have definitely found their way into this fic, despite it being set in Japan. I did my best not to slap you in the face with the cultural disconnect, so I hope it isn't too annoying if that's a pet peeve of yours.

I hope you enjoy reading!

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Note (10/29/21): I rewrote this chapter to make it flow a little better, but the story is still the same :)

Chapter Text

The heavy duffel bag slides off his shoulder and lands with a thud on the floor. Hinata sits down on the twin-sized mattress he’s going to be spending the next three weeks sleeping on, and looks across to the other bed in the room. It has a bag already dumped on top, opened but still unpacked.

Hinata decides to follow his new roommate’s example and just leave unpacking for later— he has a meeting to get to soon anyway. He unzips his duffel to rummage for his sunscreen, knowing he’ll regret it if he doesn’t put some on now that he’s here. His fair skin won’t do well under the late-July sun without copious amounts of the substance, and his standard summerwear of a tanktop and shorts won’t save his redheaded complexion from burning, either.

Hinata decides he wants to get a little look around the grounds before the counselor’s meeting begins. Today is just an orientation day for the counselors— the students don’t arrive until tomorrow, and Hinata wants to take advantage of their free day. Once he gets himself well-slathered in sunblock, he slips his sunglasses onto his head and makes his way down the hallway of the shared cabin.

He only makes it halfway down the hall before he’s distracted by an open door— he can’t help but introduce himself to his new coworker. He peeks his head around the edge of the door and takes a moment to check out his fellow camp counselor before introducing himself.

Crouched over a bag on the floor is a well-built bleach blond with an undercut. His sleeveless top shows off some nice arms, and Hinata lingers for just a few seconds longer to… appreciate his coworker’s body, before he finally raps his knuckles on the doorframe, and the blond turns around.

"Hi! I'm Hinata Shouyou, in room 2," he says, grinning widely. The blond turns around and stands up, regarding Hinata for a moment before responding, and his face is just as pleasant to look at as the rest of him.

"Hiya! 'm Miya Atsumu, ya can just call me Atsumu though." He extends a hand, and Hinata shakes it firmly. "Nice ta meet ya."

"It's nice to meet you too!" Hinata drops his hand and takes a step back into the hall. "I was just going to take a look around at everything before the meeting. Wanna come with?"

Atsumu shakes his head, "Nah, I gotta finish unpacking here. My roomie is very insistent about maintaining the cleanliness of the room," he says with a roll of the eyes. "Thanks fer the offer though. I’ll let ya get back to it."

Atsumu turns back to his task, and Hinata’s eyes linger on his body for just another moment before he finally continues on his mission to explore the grounds.

Hinata definitely isn’t intending to hook up with anyone while he’s working here— though he also isn’t not looking to hook up, if the opportunity presents itself— but he’d be damned if he wasn’t going to take a minute here and there to appreciate the athletic body of a good-looking guy, coworker or not.

The outer screen door shuts with a creak behind him as Hinata makes his way outside into the harsh sunlight. It’s not even noon and he’s already beginning to sweat, but he’s determined to take a look around anyway.

He walks along the path from the counselor’s cabin, and takes in the fresh air way out here in the country. And while it’s certainly nice to get away from the city for a few weeks, he does hope the wifi out here isn’t too spotty.

The counselor’s cabin, located along the back edge of the property, is a fair amount larger than the other cabins lining the main path through the grounds. Hinata takes a minute to pop into one of the smaller cabins, and sees that it’s just one large room with a few sets of bunk beds spread throughout— he’s suddenly glad for the privacy of the counselor’s cabin, where he only needs to share a room with one stranger. Sure, the rest of the cabin is shared with the other counselors— but that little bit of privacy will make all the difference in how comfortable he’ll be here.

He continues on his way, taking note of the gymnasiums and the outdoor volleyball nets, the cafeteria, the bathhouse, and the main common building. There are a few other structures dotting the property, like the owner’s small cabin and a couple storage sheds, and there’s a smaller path winding down into the trees that Hinata wishes he had time to explore right now. He makes a mental note to check it out later, and takes a minute to cool off under the shade of a tree a little ways off the path to avoid going into the first counselor’s meeting a sweaty mess.

He sits at the base of the tree and enjoys the slow breeze ruffling his hair. He opens up his email on his phone and scrolls through the dozens of emails he’s received from the camp’s manager over the last couple of months.

He rereads a few of the emails to refresh his memory before the meeting. The one containing all his coworker’s names is of particular interest— he remembered seeing quite a few names he recognized, and he wants to double check the list before meeting everyone in person.

He scrolls through, and sure enough, basically every counselor here is someone he’s at least heard of before. Yamaguchi is the one who told Hinata about this job opening— apparently the owner of the camp is Yamaguchi’s former middle school coach. Yamaguchi is on Hinata’s University team, along with Tsukishima— who is also working here this summer. It was a surprise to Hinata, as Tsukishima never struck him as someone interested in working with middle school kids, but Hinata suspects that Tsukishima only applied so he wouldn’t be away from his boyfriend for their entire summer break. And okay, Hinata doesn’t know if they’re technically together, but he’s caught them making eyes at each other one too many times for it to be a totally platonic situation.

The next couple of names listed in the email are ones he’s heard of either through volleyball magazines or through word-of-mouth since he started university. There’s Bokuto Koutarou and Sakusa Kiyoomi— two of the nation’s top aces in their age group. Then there’s Miya Atsumu, who Hinata just met a few minutes ago, and Akaashi Keiji, who is apparently the setter at Bokuto’s university.

And then there’s the final, most exciting name on the list— Kageyama Tobio.

Hinata had heard of him back in high school— he was one of the best high school setters in the nation, and went to school only one province away from Hinata, to boot. He’d seen his photo in Volleyball Monthly, and had even seen him from across a crowded atrium at the Spring Nationals tournament in his third year of high school, but they’ve never actually met.

So when the roommate assignment email had come through last month, Hinata had to take a couple of minutes to calm down when he saw that they’d been randomly assigned as roommates. It was the first email that had contained a list of all of the counselor’s names, so Hinata was completely blindsided by the fact that they’d even be working together, not to mention rooming together, too.

And Hinata would be lying if he said he didn’t have a little bit of a crush on Kageyama just from the glimpse he’d seen of him at nationals. He was all tall and regal-looking, plus he was clearly amazing at volleyball— what was there not to like? To be honest, Hinata has been a little nervous about actually meeting him— they would’ve met in a few months anyway once the volleyball tournament season starts up, but meeting him under this context feels a lot different than meeting him on the opposite side of a net.

But after learning they’d be roommates here, Hinata became determined to convince Kageyama to toss to him at some point during this camp— he just had to know what it was like to hit the tosses of such a skilled setter.

Hinata glances at the time and sees that the meeting is about ready to start— he’s got to get going or he’ll be late. He stands up and dusts off the butt of his shorts, only to be distracted by two people making their way out of the owner’s cabin and walking up the path to the main common building.

Hinata recognizes them as the owner of the camp, Sawamura Daichi, and the manager, Sugawara Koushi. They look to be about in their early 30’s, and they seem very at ease with each other as they walk past Hinata. They clearly don’t notice him, however, as Sawamura whispers something in Sugawara’s ear and receives a pinch on his butt in response. Hinata’s face heats a little and he averts his eyes, feeling like he’s just witnessed a private moment between the two.

He waits for them to pass by before he makes his way into the common building behind them, and sees that he’s one of the last people to arrive.

The other counselors are sitting on folding chairs that have been assembled in a messy half-circle, with Sawamura and Sugawara up at the front of the room flipping through some papers as they get ready for the meeting.

Hinata makes eye contact with Yamaguchi, who waves Hinata over to the empty seat next to him. On the other side of Yamaguchi is Tsukishima, who doesn’t even bother to look up from the book he’s reading when Hinata greets them both.

Hinata nervously glances around the room, and his chest tightens a little when he sees that Kageyama isn’t here yet— in fact, he seems to be the only person still missing.

"Ah, Hinata, good to see you found your way here!" Sawamura greets.

"Ah, yeah! I was just taking a look around, the camp looks awesome!" Hinata says, fidgeting in his seat.

"We're just waiting on one more person and then we can get started." Sawamura gives Hinata a warm smile and then turns back to his conversation with Sugawara.

Hinata decides to chat with Yamaguchi to pass the time until the meeting begins, much to Tsukishima’s annoyance. He sighs and closes his book as the two continue to chatter next to him, passively listening to their conversation instead of trying to tune them out.

A few minutes pass by before the door opens behind them, and Hinata turns to look— and is greeted by the sight of one of the hottest men he has ever seen in his life.

No photograph or glimpse from across a crowded atrium could have prepared him for the way Kageyama looks up-close and in real life.

Kageyama is panting lightly, with sweat dripping from his hair down along the line of his jaw. He pushes his black hair back from his sweat-slicked forehead only for it to fall somewhat messily back into place. He mumbles out an apology for his tardiness with an excuse about getting lost, as he goes to sit in the only remaining empty chair, on the other side of Tsukishima.

Hinata realizes his mouth is hanging open slightly and he promptly shuts it while his brain begins going a thousand miles a minute. How the fuck is Kageyama that much better-looking in person than he was in the photo that Hinata had seen? And he'd been too far away when he'd glimpsed him at Nationals for Hinata to even begin to appreciate his wide shoulders, his height, his sharp jaw or his straight nose, his smooth skin or, god, those blue eyes.

He snaps back to reality when Sawamura speaks.

"Oh, you're not late, no worries. We were just about to start though, so it's a good thing you're here now."

Hinata glances over at Kageyama again, and nearly chokes on his own spit when he sees Kageyama lifting the collar of his short-sleeved athletic shirt to wipe sweat off of his face. Kageyama’s biceps strain slightly at the hem of the sleeves, and the bottom of his shirt lifts just enough to give a tiny peek of the smooth skin of his lower abdomen. Hinata can’t tear his gaze away, letting his eyes linger for as long as the skin is visible. How is such a small thing so unbelievably distracting? Kageyama drops his shirt back down, and Hinata flicks his eyes away, hoping that his staring went unnoticed.

Hinata tries to start listening to Sawamura, he really does— but he is distracted by looking around the circle at all the other people who he's going to be working with for the next few weeks. It doesn't escape his notice that each and every one of them is attractive, but his attention continues to be dragged back to one of them in particular.

His eyes keep wandering back to Kageyama, who sports a seemingly permanent scowl on his face. Hinata tries to keep his lingering gazes short, but he meets Kageyama’s eyes a few times during the meeting anyway. Every time that Hinata is caught, he’s greeted by a deepened scowl and Kageyama’s eyes flicking away quickly.

It isn't until Atsumu begins speaking that Hinata realizes he has been paying way too much attention to Kageyama, and paying way too little attention to the meeting.

They appear to be going around the circle to introduce themselves, and Hinata focuses so that he won't embarrass himself later by not knowing who someone is. He might have recognized everyone’s names in the emails, but that doesn’t mean he knows what everyone looks like.

They go around the circle: Atsumu is sitting next to Sakusa Kiyoomi, who it turns out was the roommate he'd mentioned earlier. Next to him is Bokuto Koutarou and Akaashi Keiji; Akaashi introduces himself as the head counselor, and this is his second year as a counselor at this camp. The introductions continue on to Hinata, Yamaguchi, and Tsukishima, then finally they reach Kageyama.

Not that Hinata needed the introduction to know who he was, but hearing Kageyama’s deep voice as he speaks is certainly doing something to Hinata. He flushes lightly as he is caught staring yet again— though this time he has the excuse of being polite and simply making eye contact while someone is speaking, at least.

But when Kageyama continues maintaining eye contact with Hinata, even after he’s done introducing himself to the group, Hinata's breath catches in his throat. Kageyama’s face is somehow drawn into an even deeper frown than it had been earlier during all those times when he kept on catching Hinata’s wandering eyes.

It’s unfair that he still looks so hot while pulling such a grumpy face, Hinata thinks.

Feeling an almost competitive spark at the weird amount of eye contact happening right now, Hinata doesn't want to be the one to look away first. He clears his throat and smiles at Kageyama, only for Kageyama to quickly break their eye contact to look back towards Sawamura.

Well, that didn’t last long. Hinata feels content with his little victory, anyway.

The meeting continues, with Sugawara taking over to go over the schedule for the week and passing around several papers to be looked over before the following day, as Hinata continues to wonder what the hell that thing with Kageyama just now had been about.

"Finally, I wanted to mention that there is another volleyball camp across the lake that we have a bit of a friendly rivalry with," Sawamura says as the meeting is wrapping up. "We always end up having the students do some practice matches later on during the camp, so you can look forward to that. The cafeteria building closes at 9, so be sure to get something to eat before then. Ah, and please feel free to address me as Daichi, or you can continue to call me Sawamura if that makes you more comfortable. I'll let you guys go now so you can get settled."

Sugawara lets everyone know his preferred nickname of ‘Suga’ as well, and then they conclude the meeting.

The room builds in volume as people begin talking as they stand and gather their things. Hinata wants to introduce himself to Kageyama, but by the time he’s done grabbing all the papers that had been handed out, he sees that Kageyama is already moving quickly out the door and avoiding eye contact altogether now.

"Ah, Kageyama, wait!" Hinata says, maybe a little louder than appropriate for an indoor space. Kageyama makes no indication that he hears him, and keeps moving beyond the doors, letting them close behind him. Hinata pouts and moves to run after him, but he’s disrupted by a voice calling his name. He turns to see Sakusa and Atsumu standing right behind him.

"Oh, hi guys. What's up?" Hinata shuffles restlessly from one foot to the other, a little irritated that he'd been interrupted in his quest to follow Kageyama. He knows he’ll probably have plenty of time to talk to him once he gets back to their shared room, but he'd kind of wanted to meet Kageyama before they were meeting for the first time in the context of the complete privacy of their shared bedroom.

Not that anything was going to happen, of course. It just feels kinda weird to think about.

He shakes his head to stop that train of thought.

"You're Hinata Shouyou from Tsukuba." Sakusa states.

"Umm, yep!" Hinata smiles and scratches the back of his head with the hand not holding his papers. He glances at Atsumu for some explanation of the strange behavior of his roommate, but he just shrugs.

"What's your most recent vertical? Why weren't you a wing spiker in high school? Your quick at Nationals last year was ridiculous." Sakusa lets out a barrage in Hinata's direction, stepping closer to Hinata with each new question or statement. Hinata's eyes widen as he takes a step back to regain some of the distance between them.

"Whoa, uh—"

"Yer crowdin' him, Omi-omi." Atsumu chuckles. He directs his attention to Hinata before saying, "Sorry, he's a bit of a fanboy."

"I am not a— a fanboy!” Sakusa says indignantly, “It's— your play style is just interesting." he grumbles, and glares at Atsumu. His hands come together in front of himself as he begins to play with his fingers.

"Uh, thanks! How did you— how do you know who I am?" Hinata asks, confused by the situation but flattered nonetheless. It’s not like Hinata had been featured in any magazines in high school like Kageyama and Bokuto had been.

"Oh, he likes watchin' all the tapes of other good volleyball schools, done it since high school. He also likes readin' interviews in magazines, and stalkin' other players on social media, and—"

"Shut up, Atsumu." Sakusa's face is a flattering shade of pink, and he’s glaring even harder at Atsumu than he had been before. "I just need to know about the competition so I know how to train."

"Yeah, yeah, we all wanna be the very best there ever was." Atsumu rolls his eyes and claps a hand on Sakusa's shoulder. "Let's leave poor little Shouyou here to go unpack."

Sakusa, thoroughly embarrassed now, shrugs off Atsumu's hand and turns away from Hinata to leave the room, continuing to pick at his fingers on his way out. Atsumu gives a final grin to Hinata as he follows Sakusa out.

At this point, everyone else has filtered out of the room while Hinata was busy being ambushed. He makes his way back down the path to the counselor’s cabin, and uses the time during his short walk to psych himself up to properly introduce himself to Kageyama.

Hinata has talked to plenty of hot people in his life, and while he can definitely still get flustered around them, he comforts himself with the knowledge that he’s gotten a lot better at it as he’s gotten older. He can definitely do this while acting like a normal person! Nothing weird about having a teensy tiny little crush on someone you’ve never spoken to before— right?

Okay, he just needs to keep that little piece of information to himself, and everything should be fine.

He stands in front of the door to their shared room, and he takes a deep breath to steady his nerves before turning the handle. He enters and sees Kageyama rummaging in his bag for something, but his shoulders visibly tense when he hears the door open.

Well, here goes nothing.

“Hi, I’m Hinata Shouyou! It’s nice to meet you, Kageyama!”

Okay, so far, so good. That was normal.

Kageyama turns around, and Hinata is immediately overwhelmed again with just how good he looks. How is it fair for a person to look like that? His height is even more notable now that they’re only standing a meter or two apart, and his blue eyes are stunning, even in the poor lighting that’s filtering in from the small window at the far side of the room.

"Yeah, nice to meet you. Excuse me." Kageyama shuffles past Hinata to reach the door.

Hinata is a little surprised at his sudden departure, but he guesses that at least there’s no time to be weird if the person you’re introducing yourself to just fucking leaves in the middle of the conversation. Maybe this is a good thing…?

Nah, fuck that, Hinata is going to follow him.

He quickly darts into the room to set all of his papers down on the dresser at the foot of his bed, then turns back to follow Kageyama out of the room. He jogs a little to catch up to him, but it takes almost no time at all before he falls into step with Kageyama along the path outside.

"Where are you headed to?" Hinata inquires, determined to keep the conversation going despite Kageyama brushing him off just a second ago.

"The gymnasium."

Hinata refuses to give up despite the clipped answer. "Were you going to practice by yourself?"

"That was the plan."

"Well why don't I join you? I haven't been able to play yet today and I'm antsy about it."

Kageyama slows his pace and glances down at Hinata where he’s walking beside him.

"Uh, sure, I guess." Kageyama says after a moment, before continuing on towards the gym. Content with at least getting to spend a little more time with him, and figuring he can continue talking in the gym, Hinata doesn’t push the conversation further.

And after a few quiet seconds, Kageyama is the one to break the silence.

"What position do you play?" he asks.

"I play wing spiker! I played middle blocker in high school though. You're a setter, right?" Hinata knows he’s a setter, it’s one of the reasons he finds him so attractive. Something about setters just… draw him in. But he doesn’t want to sound creepy about it, so he pretends to be unsure.

"Yeah, I'm a setter." he nods. They reach the entrance to the gym and go inside. Hinata is glad the doors are unlocked— he was a little worried they'd need to go find Daichi or Suga to get the keys.

"Well then send me lots of tosses!" Hinata grins widely at him, and Kageyama’s eyes linger on him for just a moment before looking away, then he walks towards the net.

"Yeah, of course, dumbass. We're the only two here, who else would I toss to?"

"There’s no need to be rude!" Hinata sticks his tongue out at Kageyama, but it goes unnoticed as Kageyama starts rolling the ball cart to the edge of the court.

Hinata begins his stretches as Kageyama starts some lonely drills with a volleyball. "Don’t you need to warm up too?" Hinata asks from his spot on the floor.

"I was in here earlier, my muscles are still warm from then."

"Oh, is that why you were almost late to the meeting?"

Kageyama nods, but then Hinata remembers something.

"I thought you said you got lost when you came in, though? Did you get lost between the gym and the common building?" He switches to stretching out his other leg.

Kageyama's face reddens a little as he catches the ball he'd been smacking against the wall. "I… I couldn't figure out which building it was. I ended up in the cafeteria building first."

Hinata barks out a laugh. The cafeteria building is off to the side of the camp, and is pretty clearly marked as a cafeteria.

"Shut up, it's an easy mistake to make." Kageyama huffs, beginning to smack the ball against the wall again. Hinata's laughter dies down as he finishes his stretches, then he bounces up to his feet.

"I'm ready to go! Send me a toss, Kageyama!" He plucks a ball from the cart as Kageyama tosses the ball he'd been using back into it. Hinata takes his position at the end of the court and sends up the ball to Kageyama's position in front of the net, and begins sprinting forward.

He leaps high in the air, and the ball meets his hand with a solid smack, hitting the floor just inside the line on the other end of the court.

"Wow!!! That toss was almost perfect, Kageyama!" he exclaims as his feet hit the floor and he stares at his reddened palm. "Keep tossing like that!"

A huge grin spreads across Hinata’s face, the satisfaction of spiking the ball settling into him. It’s only been a couple days since he last played, but it feels good to be back on the court. He turns to face Kageyama, and curiously notes the light pink dusting on Kageyama’s cheeks as he reaches for another ball from the cart. Must be from the heat, Hinata reasons.

"Does it need any adjustments?"

"Ah, maybe just a couple millimeters higher?" Hinata requests, and Kageyama gives a curt nod as he grabs the next ball.

The next ball slams into Hinata's palm with exact precision, and Hinata is liberal with his praises, letting Kageyama know just how perfect that toss was. His grin splits his face as he runs back into position for the next spike.

They continue practicing together until the ball cart runs empty. Panting, Hinata looks around to see if there’s anywhere he can get a drink, but frowns slightly when he sees the only place to do so is a utility sink, and he hadn't brought his water bottle in his rush to leave their room earlier.

He jogs over anyway, taking the chance to wash off some of the sweat from practicing in the July heat. He sticks his whole head under the faucet for a few seconds, then turns to get several gulps before turning the tap off and shaking his head out over the sink. Standing and running and hand through his hair to get his sticky bangs off of his forehead, he turns to see Kageyama staring at him while loosely holding several volleyballs in his arms that he'd been clearing from the floor.

"Let's keep going! I just needed to cool off but I'm good to go now!" Hinata says. Kageyama gives a jolt at the sound of Hinata’s voice, and drops all of the balls he’d been holding to the ground.

"Ahm— ah, yeah, just gotta... clean up the balls first..." Kageyama mumbles, and ducks down to collect the balls he'd dropped, quickly turning back towards the cart. As Hinata begins helping him clean, Kageyama scolds, "You're dripping all over the floor, dumbass."

"Ehhh? Well you're dropping balls all over the floor, clumsy-yama!" Hinata responds indignantly. Kageyama mumbles something under his breath in response before grabbing a ball from the cart, preparing to toss again for Hinata.

The ball cart has been emptied several more times by the time anyone else enters the gym. A loud voice comes from the direction of the doors, and it distracts Hinata so much that he ends up missing the toss Kageyama just set for him.

“Hey hey hey! You guys are practicing already? Trying to get a one-up on the rest of us, eh?” Bokuto playfully accuses as he enters the gym, with Akaashi following closely behind him.

"The cafeteria is serving dinner now, we just finished eating." Akaashi lets them know.

"It's been that long already?" Hinata asks, glancing at Kageyama with a bewildered look. Kageyama looks a little surprised too, but just shrugs his shoulders.

"Wow, you guys must really like playing with each other to lose track of time like that!" Bokuto walks over and slaps Kageyama on the back, earning him an annoyed glare that Bokuto doesn't even notice. "But you're gonna miss dinner if you don't stop soon, and anyways, 'Kaashi and I wanted to practice together now, so you won't have to clean the gym since we'll be using it. We're good senpais, huh?"

"Ah, yeah! Thanks Bokuto, thanks Akaashi!” Hinata says, before turning to Kageyama, “Kageyama, wanna go get dinner together?"

Kageyama's annoyed expression slips back into his usual frown, and he nods and surrenders the ball he'd been holding to an overenthusiastic Bokuto. They exit the gym, Hinata with a wave and a thanks, and Kageyama silently following behind.

"Think you can find your way back to the cafeteria building? Or are you gonna get lost and end up down at the lake?" Hinata teases as they start up the path.

"I know which way the cafeteria is!" Kageyama grumbles, reaching his arm out and grappling Hinata's hair to shake his head.

"Ow!! What the hell?!" One of Hinata's hands flies up to Kageyama's arm to pull him off, but the instant his hand makes contact with Kageyama's wrist, Kageyama yanks his hand back. "What was that for, stupid?!" Hinata rubs his head, glaring back at Kageyama.

Kageyama ignores the question, simply walking faster towards the cafeteria building in reply. Hinata jogs a bit to catch up, but as soon as he enters Kageyama's line of vision, Kageyama breaks into a run. Without missing a beat, Hinata breaks into a sprint, racing Kageyama to the cafeteria. They arrive at the door panting, with Kageyama touching the door frame a half-second before Hinata.

"Hah! I win." Kageyama says, a small smile breaking out on his face.

Hinata's heart skips a beat at seeing Kageyama smile for the first time, but he regains his senses quickly and replies, "I'll beat you next time!"

At the counter in the dining hall, they hear the sound of a few men talking from behind the door to the kitchen. A small man with brown spiked hair and a blonde streak in the front pops his head out the door, “Hey guys! For tonight you can just go ahead and serve yourselves since it’s just the counselors, starting tomorrow we’ll be doing that for you though. Don’t want those kids getting their hands all over everyone’s food, right?” he smiles. “I’m Nishinoya by the way!”

“I’m Hinata Shouyou!” Hinata greets, grabbing an empty plate that’s laid out in a stack on the counter next to a small variety of prepared foods. Hinata begins piling food on his plate as Kageyama introduces himself as well.

They sit at one of the many empty tables in the dining hall. Hinata rambles on for a while, talking about everything from the first day of the camp tomorrow to his sister Natsu joining her middle school volleyball team this year. Kageyama occasionally interjects, only speaking at length when the topic is volleyball.

Hinata pokes fun at Kageyama for drinking milk, which decidedly does not pair with the onigiri he’s eating for dinner, and Kageyama insists that there’s never a wrong time to drink milk.

Hinata’s initial unease at being in the presence of such a good-looking person had lessened quite a lot once they began doing spiking practice earlier, and by the time they make it back to their room for the night, Hinata feels almost completely comfortable around Kageyama— at least, when they’re just chatting or playing volleyball together.

Hinata has never been one to struggle with making friends, but really attractive people do have a tendency to make him a little stupider than normal— so he’s glad that it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be awkward between him and Kageyama for the next few weeks over something so silly.

“God, I need a shower.” Hinata groans as he enters their room and starts looking through his duffel for his shower stuff. “I wish they had showers here in the cabin, I’m not super looking forward to having to trek across the lawn to the bathhouse with all this stuff every day.” He slings the small drawstring bag containing his bathing items and a change of clothes over his shoulder. “You coming?”

Kageyama grabs his own shower stuff, but he’s acting sort of dodgy, refusing to look in Hinata’s direction.

“Yeah,” Kageyama says to the ground, his own bag in hand. Hinata eyes him, wondering what’s up, but decides to ignore it for now. Maybe he’s just grumpy because he’s tired or something.

“Race you to the bath building!” Hinata bolts out of the room, cackling as he hears, “Idiot! That was a false start!” from behind as he rushes to exit the cabin.

The feet slapping against the pavement behind him start getting a little louder as Hinata gets closer to the bath building, but Hinata easily reaches it first, and sighs both in relief and slight disappointment at seeing the individual shower stalls. Hinata is glad he won’t have to worry about trying not to stare at a naked Kageyama— but also, he maybe wanted to see a naked Kageyama. Oh well.

Inside the bath building, Hinata quickly takes in his surroundings. The inside of the building is covered in pale tan tiles, and the main room has a dozen shower stalls on either side, each with a curtain for privacy. Off to the right, there is an adjacent room connected by a wide archway that has a row of sinks along the far wall, with toilet stalls along the wall that’s shared with the shower room.

Kageyama finally comes thundering in behind him.

“I win!” Hinata cheers, walking to one of the nearby stalls to hang up his bag and begin undressing.

“That doesn’t count! And I forgot my shower sandals because of you!” Kageyama snaps at him, stomping over to a stall across from Hinata’s.

“You’re gonna get a nasty foot fungus now.” Hinata jokes, pulling his tank top off over his head and grabbing his own shower sandals from his bag. He dumps his shirt on the ground, then toes off his socks and sneakers before slipping into his shower sandals. Hinata ducks into the stall to close the curtain before he shucks the rest of his clothing and tosses it out the side of the curtain and into a pile in front of the stall.

“If I get a foot fungus I’m going to rub my feet in your bed.” Kageyama threatens over the sound of his shower turning on.

“Eugh, that’s nasty.”

“It’s your fault for bringing it up, and for making me forget my sandals.” Kageyama grumbles, barely loud enough for Hinata to hear over the sound of the showers. Hinata just laughs.

Their showers are completed in peace, until Hinata steps out of his stall to see Kageyama bent down to stuff his feet into his sneakers, clad in only a pair of gray sweatpants and a towel around his neck. Kageyama’s skin stretches over his shifting back muscles, and the veins in his forearm bulge a little as he hooks a finger into the back of his sneaker to ease his foot inside.

Hinata’s own shirt is only half-on, slid over his arms stretched out in front of him, and he doesn’t even realize he’s staring until Kageyama stands up to grab his bag from the hanger next to his shower stall. Hinata hurriedly stuffs himself into his shirt and changes out of his shower sandals, keeping his back to Kageyama and awkwardly shifting stuff around in his bag in an attempt to buy time for the intense redness on his face to cool down.

If he wasn’t so distracted, he might’ve noticed Kageyama moving towards the exit before he shouts, “First back to the cabin wins!”

Hinata jolts upright and immediately rips his bag off the hook on the wall, sprinting out of the building and not caring that the floor is wet and that he’s being stupidly reckless.

Hinata might be a little hot under the collar at the sight of his topless roommate, but that doesn't mean he’s going to forfeit a race when challenged.

He catches up to Kageyama just as they reach the entrance, both shoving at the other to get through the door first, despite the challenge being ‘first to the cabin’ and not ‘first to the room’— they either don’t remember or don’t care. They burst inside and almost run directly into a very surprised-looking Yamaguchi.

“Shit!” Kageyama swears, sliding into Hinata’s back as Hinata plants his feet to avoid toppling over his friend.

“Uh, hey Yamaguchi!” Hinata smiles, breathing a little hard. Yamaguchi looks between the two of them, Hinata wide-eyed at having been slammed into and trying to maintain his balance, and Kageyama looking pissed-off at the general situation as he extracts himself from Hinata’s back.

“Uh, hi Hinata. What’s going on?”

“We were just racing back to the cabin!” Hinata says, as if this is a normal thing to do with someone you only met a few hours ago.

“Okay…” Yamaguchi glances between the two with a wary expression, “Well, I’m going to go find Tsukki, I left him in the dining hall a while ago and thought he’d be back by now.” He looks between them one more time with an expression Hinata can’t quite read, and they move out of the way for Yamaguchi to pass them before walking calmly the rest of the way to their room.

“Okay, I think that one was a tie.” Hinata says, sitting down on his bed.

“I’d have won if that guy hadn’t been in the hallway.” Kageyama huffs, dropping his stuff on the floor and flopping down belly-first on his bed— still shirtless, Hinata notes. Apparently Kageyama is planning on staying shirtless, and it hadn’t just been a shower-only thing.

Gee, what a shame.

“In what world? I was in front of you when we got into the cabin!” Hinata takes the chance to get another good look at Kageyama’s broad back, now that he isn’t so shocked to see it.

Kageyama rolls over and Hinata has to pull his eyes away before being caught, though he really wants to look at Kageyama’s exposed front, too. But if Kageyama sleeps shirtless, which seems very likely given the current situation of Kageyama being both shirtless and in his bed, Hinata is pretty sure he’ll be granted another chance for covert ogling soon enough anyways.

“So? I would’ve passed you in the hallway.” Kageyama says.

“I think I’m being generous by saying it’s a tie, I was definitely not gonna let you pass in the hallway.” Hinata insists, “So, it’s 1-1.”

“Fine, whatever.” Kageyama huffs with a roll of his eyes, and grabs his phone from his pocket, rolling back onto his stomach to tap at the screen. Hinata decides to check his own phone, and after answering some texts from his mom and sister, he grabs the stack of papers off of his dresser and begins reading through them. He notices Kageyama doing the same after a few minutes.

After what feels like an eternity of reading through schedules and intro paperwork and all the other stuff he’d been handed at the meeting earlier in the day, Hinata gets up to begin unpacking his stuff.

The shared room contains the two twin-sized beds with two upright dressers situated against the wall at the foot of either bed, where Hinata begins putting some of his clothing. On top of each of the dressers rests a laundry basket. The beds are pushed into the corners of the room on either side of the doorway, and there’s also a small table underneath the window along the wall opposite the door with a chair on either side of it.

All things considered, the room is a decent size considering that there would never be permanent occupants. The cabin itself has four of these rooms, accommodating the eight counselors, plus a small shared kitchenette and living room area at the back of the cabin with a couch and television. Just off the kitchenette, there’s a bathroom containing a toilet, sink, and laundry machine/dryer combo, so at least they don't have to walk all the way to the bath building just to use the toilet and can clean their sweaty gym clothes during their three-week stay here.

“Are you going to unpack?” Hinata asks, putting the last of his clothes into his dresser.

“I guess I probably should.” Kageyama says, setting his own stack of papers back onto his dresser. He plops his duffel on his bed and begins busying himself with unpacking.

Hinata takes the opportunity to quickly and covertly remove the most embarrassing item from his duffel— namely, the bottle of lube he uses to jerk off— and stuffs it quickly under his pillow while Kageyama is distracted. He’d considered not bringing it, worried a bit about the potential awkwardness of someone else finding it, but then he realized that there was no way he wasn’t going to touch himself for three entire weeks and packed it anyway, possible consequences be damned. He doesn’t strictly need the lube to masturbate, but he is a man of varied sexual tastes and maybe, sometimes, he likes to finger himself when he jacks off, and maybe he likes to do that pretty frequently. He resolves to move the lube to a safer location at some point when Kageyama isn’t in the room.

After his sneaky lube-hiding maneuver, he grabs his phone and notices the battery is almost dead. Hinata kneels on his bed and bends over the side to plug his phone charger into the outlet located along the wall. When he turns back, he catches Kageyama staring fixedly at him.

“What? Do I have something stuck to me?” Hinata raises a bit onto his knees and twists to look at his back, but sees nothing there. He’s a little concerned that Kageyama may have seen what he’d just put under his pillow a minute ago, but Kageyama’s expression isn’t giving anything away. He just looks a little blank, scowl curiously absent. Kageyama doesn’t respond, just hurriedly breaks his gaze and walks back to his bag to continue to pick stuff out to put away, albeit maybe with a little more urgency than before.

Hoping he misunderstood the stare, or at least pretending to himself that Kageyama hadn’t seen his secret bottle of masturbatory goodness, Hinata sits down on his bed with his back against the wall with his legs crossed applesauce-style in front of him and pretends to scroll through his phone while sneaking glances at Kageyama’s naked torso. Whether he’s sneaking peeks at the front or the back, there’s no shortage of things to look at.

The curve of his spine, the dimples on his lower back. His well-sculpted abs and pecs, his belly button, the faint trail of hair leading down from it and into the waistband of his sweats. Any and every part of his arms and hands. Every single part of him is divine to look at.

Hinata is lucky that it seems like Kageyama is avoiding looking at him as he finishes unpacking, because otherwise, he would surely notice at least a few of the literal dozens of glances that Hinata is sending his way. Hinata decides not to think too hard about why Kageyama isn’t looking at him right now, not wanting to deal with the embarrassment of Kageyama probably having seen the whole lube-hiding exploit.

Hinata knows he is going to have a very rough time sharing a room with this stupidly hot half-dressed man, and he finds himself hoping that Kageyama won’t spend a lot of time in the room so Hinata can have some time to himself as soon as possible. His thoughts drift to the substance stashed under his pillow, but he shakes his head slightly to snap his thoughts away from that train of thought before he finds himself in a very awkward situation— his sleep shorts aren’t going to do anything to hide an untimely erection, and he’s pretty sure that popping a boner in front of his new acquaintance wouldn’t be appreciated.

“Want me to shut off the lights?” Kageyama asks after he finishes emptying his bag, stuffing the empty duffel under his bed. Hinata checks the time and sees it’s almost 10PM. He’s usually an early-to-bed kind of person anyways, so he nods his head, and the lights go off. Hinata flops over onto his side, stretching his legs out a bit. There’s still a glow of the hallway light coming from under the door, and from that light he sees Kageyama get under the blankets on his own bed, his back facing Hinata.

“Good night, Kageyama.”

“‘Night.”

Hinata puts his phone down and rolls to face the wall, scooching underneath the covers. He tries to keep his thoughts off of the man laying only a meter away from him, his chest all exposed and smooth and broad. Hinata takes a deep breath, begging his mind to stop lingering on thoughts of Kageyama’s voice and face and hair and body.

How the hell is he supposed to get through three weeks of nights sleeping like this? He wills his stupid, horny little brain to stop thinking about licking a nice long stripe up the abs of the dude sleeping behind him— this is just getting absurd.

And oh, great, now he’s sporting a semi.

Hinata reaches down to adjust himself in his sleep shorts, and focuses his thoughts on work. He thinks about how the camp is starting tomorrow, and his excitement over being able to work in such a fun job during his summer break— and maybe he lets his mind drift to thoughts of how fun it could be to get to know Kageyama while he's here, too.

And after several minutes, he distracts himself enough to drift off into a restless sleep, dreaming of steely blue eyes.
