Dove, standing hidden just behind the half open tack room door felt warmth spread underneath her skin. She let her eyes flit down to her boots, her mouth opened just barely at the thought of the absurd, mortifying, humiliating act of kneeling. The way she spoke to the mare, the gentleness of her touch, Dove thought it was something she might be able to pray to with the devoutness she’d been searching for. It was exactly the kind of thought that would have made Pastor Alder talk for an hour about temptation and the weakness of flesh.

Abby finds the fireflies instead of being taken by the rattlers and ends up in a well built and maintained settlement on Catalina Island. She meets a woman named Dove, the daughter of the guy who oversees the settlement, and the devout Christian woman. However, Dove struggles to uphold that title.
