Summary
Baran wasn’t ready for this thing between her and Jack to be more than a gratifying friends with benefits arrangement. Robby’s shadow felt ever-present, and his sabbatical journey occupied a tremendous amount of Jack's mental real estate, far more so than she would have expected when she let herself fall into whatever this was between her and Jack. The only place that Robby’s ghostly presence didn’t lurk between them was when they were in bed. Except here they were, in bed, talking about him.

Summary
There's a jar on your nightstand, still, full of tiny paper stars. It's been there for years, moved with you from Boston to Pittsburgh. The sun has faded them by now, the pastel colors nearly white with time. Robby had asked about them once, when started staying over more often. At the time, all you could say was “Ellie made them.”

Summary
In Jack’s head, the line between them gets blurry sometimes, the distinctions between his and Robby’s experiences getting tangled together. Robby lost his arm in Iraq, just below the elbow, and Jack lost his leg in a motorcycle accident, all the way up to the pelvis. No, Jack lost the arm. No, he left his leg in Iraq. Robby left his arm on the interstate, somewhere in southern Ohio.

Summary
And that was the whole, Robby-sized problem of it: that Jack would let him have anything, really, if he asked nicely enough.
