Lieutenant Jopson was unsure where his seeming obsession with Crozier’s steward, a Mister Edward Little, had started, but he had a suspicion that it was when he had first seen him, at the first dinner aboard Terror, where Edward served each officer, then made to disappear, drawing himself into the darkest corners of the room to fade away from their consciousness until there was something required of him. Thomas longs to know why, and more importantly, who that man was under the layer of taciturn indifference.

“There’s nothing else you desire from me?” Thomas sets his sewing down carefully on the tiny table in front of him and gets to his feet, so he is facing Little. “This button, for instance,” he continues. It’s a gamble and he knows it, but the sharp inhale that Little makes as he brushes one finger over the button of his greatcoat is more than worth it. “It could use tightening. I could do that for you now, if you’d like.”
