Summary
It was important, his mom had told him. Kids would be looking up to him. He didn’t know who all he was reaching, but he did know that he’d be one of the only people that looked like him they would see. There still aren’t that many Asian players in the league. Whatever he’s done, his whole career has been about setting an example. About making sure he’s someone people can point to fifteen, twenty years from now and herald as an example of a successful Japanese-Canadian hockey player. A story to tell little Japanese-Canadian kids and something concrete for the naysayers. Proof that people who look like him have talent, have the ability to succeed. Proof that they’re worthy of being in the rooms.
It’s a lot. Some days, Shane wishes he didn’t have to be bigger than himself.
But events like this still mean something, even if they stopped meaning much to him years ago. It’s a good thing for him to show up. If the photos reach even one kid, that’s one kid who maybe feels less alone, less hopeless about their future.

Summary
He loves him.
Ilya knows that, has felt that. Strong enough to say it to Shane, even. But he isn’t sure if he realized the extent of it until a day ago. Until he was faced with Shane’s limp body lying a few feet away on the ice and the crushing reality that he couldn’t go to him. He needed to go back to his bench. That was where he belonged. Because he wasn’t Shane’s teammate, or his… partner, ultimately. There was no reason for him to be there. No reason for him to be part of the group of people worried for Shane, because as far as everyone knew, they were rival captains. Enemies, maybe, to some. Not friends, and certainly not more than that.

Summary
Sometimes he feels like every minute of his life is a test, and he’s failing. People look at him and wonder if he deserves to be where he is no matter what, inherent. Because of who he is. Because of the way he looks. People question the choice to make him captain, question his decision-making and his ability to be effective at the job. It doesn’t matter how many times he proves himself.
He’s earned it, but he has to keep earning it. Not offering up more reasons for people to doubt him. Not making them think the captain of the team decided to sit out a game for some stupid shoulder pain.

Summary
Ilya knew that Shane was Japanese, of course. It was one of many things that he knew about his husband, like his height, his birthday, his relative position in the NHL scoring race at any given moment, and the noise he made when he was about to come. He just hadn't thought about Shane being Japanese very much before they moved in together in Ottawa and could spend more than stolen moments together.

Summary
It's Shane Hollander's first season in Ottawa, and the whole Centaurs roster is playing better than they ever have. So why won't the press focus on that? Why do he and Ilya keep having to answer questions about their marriage, and not get to talk about the incredible start to the season that their team is having? Maybe if they do one podcast, with hosts who are normal people, they can just tell their whole story and focus on bringing the Stanley Cup to Ottawa.

Summary
“I turned the other cheek every fucking time. I still got tossed on my ass the second I went too far over the line, and threatened by the commissioner, and told to kill myself on just about every social media platform because my nightmare that I’d get outed came true. And you, after everything you did, got to come out to a supportive team and fans, get a slap on the wrist, and have your happy fucking ending.”
