When the door opened, albeit having expected to see Alhaitham staring down at him, he still felt a part of him tug him away from the place. But, he stood there, swallowing his pride as the rain poured mercilessly over him.
Alhaitham didn’t say anything. He merely looked up at the rain and then back at Kaveh.
“I didn’t know where else to go,” Kaveh said.

“I’d rather just decompose in a pit somewhere than be beholden to any favor of yours,” comes Alhaitham’s dry reply.
Even in public, no punches are held. Alhaitham strikes right at Kaveh where it hurts, rendering him useless. “You utter troglodyte,” spits Kaveh, not one bit embarrassed by his choice of insult. And neither is Alhaitham who just throws a look over his shoulder, eyebrow raised.
Kaveh gets his chance, later on when Alhaitham walks right into a nest of fungus and eats a face full of spores.

“You speak over twenty languages!” Kaveh punctuates his argument with a slight stomp of his foot. The smooth stone floor of the kitchen is cool underneath his feet. “Surely even someone as boorish as you can learn how to make a cup of coffee!”
Alhaitham smiles as if he’s already won the argument. “Careful, Light of the Kshahrewar. That almost sounded like a compliment directed towards me and not an insult.”
Three cups of coffee that Kaveh and Alhaitham share over the course of their relationship as it evolves from two colleagues at-odds with each other to something far greater.
