Summary
Once upon a time, European naturalists received from skin traders a bird specimen with the most exquisite plumage, but without wings nor legs. They thought it was born in the heavens and took flight through miracles, that it lived off dews and will never touch the ground until the day it died. They named it the “bird-of-paradise.”
Turned out it was because local hunters thought the Europeans were only interested in the fancy feathers and hacked off the wings and legs when they taxidermied the dead bird.
