Summary
Hosea doesn’t laugh.
Her eyes are steady, throat bobbing, hands gripping the thing like it might bite her.
Dutch, dry and mean and not all that serious, asks if the woman has ever even seen a pecker before. And still, Hosea doesn’t laugh.
Dutch wishes she pieced it together quicker. Because now, looking back, she does feel naive. Like some dumb, young badge too slow on the draw. She should have been the one to propose. Would’ve saved herself the embarrassment of looking dumbstruck and eager when Hosea did instead.

Summary
The gown is a beautiful piece. Cerulean blue, silk or satin—he’s not sure, but it looks expensive. Drapes flowing down the skirt like rapids. Frills twirled into flowers, delicate lace embellishing the trims, framing his collarbone. The way it moves when he shifts, the way it pools at his feet—he could almost forget how much of a fool he should feel while wearing it.
“Would you look at that,” Trelawny chirps, appearing beside him in the mirror. “We match.”
He gestures from his eyes to the dress. The same deep shade of blue. That insufferable tilt of his brows, reveling in the fact they complement each other.
Hosea's nose wrinkles.
He hates that damn rag.
1889 — Trelawney and Hosea are paired up for a heist. The party invitation is for a couple. Hosea's not thrilled.

Summary
Dutch had followed her in the bathroom, blabbering excuses about not wanting to put up with the boy at the desk, and praising the importance of sticking together if they wanted to make a run for it. Nonsense, all of it. Dutch simply can't let Hosea have something nice without poking her nose into it. And Hosea has resigned herself to the fact that she doesn’t actually mind the company.
If Dutch doesn’t try to talk her way into the tub, Hosea will consider it a failure of her instincts.

Summary
Maybe Charles thinks Kieran is just like a horse. Skittish, harmless, a little slow, in constant need of reassurance. A burden, sometimes, when he gets himself hurt and needs tending to.
Kieran doesn’t mind the idea. Being treated like a person is far more terrifying.
Kieran has an horrible braid in his hair, Charles helps.
