    "So that's it?" I asked, my voice coming out more weary than I intended. "You're just going to leave. Again."

    Ada paused for a second, her hand still resting on the leather of the holster. She didn't turn around immediately, but I saw the slight shift in her shoulders. When she finally looked at me, there was no mockery in her eyes, only a cutting clarity.

    "And what do you expect me to do, Leon? Stay?" She took a slow step toward me, the sound of her heels echoing on the concrete floor. "We work precisely because we don't stay together. You know that as well as I do."

    I let out a dry laugh, shaking my head while staring at the floor.

    "It's a convenient way to justify the fact that you never choose to stay."

    "And what if I did?"
    "Would you be ready for what comes next? For the man you’d stop being if you were by my side?"

     

    Leon and Ada keep crossing paths over the years. Each reunion becomes a piece of a bond they try, unsuccessfully, to ignore. Between sharp banter and forced alliances, the barriers they’ve so carefully built begin to crumble.
