Every time she has a new dress made, she'll parade the finished article in front of him like a dress shop mannequin, only with a much brighter smile on her face. When she hires her new French maid, she rattles off the woman's résumé excitedly to him, previous employers he's never heard of sounding like prayers or saints’ names in her mouth. Even something as small as new table napkins, she'll show him the embroidered R in the corner as proudly as if she'd done it herself.

It isn't a decision George has taken lightly. In fact, when it had first occurred to him, he'd brushed the thought away, trying to bury it. But the tendrils of the idea kept creeping through and, before he knew it, had firmly taken root ‘til he couldn't ignore it any longer; he's made a mistake which must be fixed.
He's forty-three, rich as Croesus, and he's been so busy getting richer for the last twenty years that he quite forgot to get married. Something that he intends to rectify as soon as possible.

Summary
After rejecting Turner's advances, George reflects about the maid's words and his relationship with his wife, ultimately deciding to go to Bertha.
The first part of this story is pretty much about why Mr. Russell is so in love with his wife and why he has eyes only for her (they're so soft, I can't even). As things progress, George proves why he is a beast in the sheets. (it's what I like to call PWP - Porn With Pheelings).

A twist in fate has George and Bertha never meeting — not until the year 1882, at least. That is the year George Russell sets out to ruin the life of a Mr. Thorburn, a fellow railroad magnate.
At least, that is the plan up until the moment he first lays eyes on Thorburn's wife.
