Hailey couldn't stop staring. She'd seen him almost from the moment she'd walked in. He was alone, clearly trying to go unnoticed. As if such a thing was possible. As if the impossible sight of him, even in the dark, wouldn’t draw in her eyes as surely as if he was seated right below a spotlight. He looked exactly like she remembered, but at the same time different. That was odd. All the other times she’d picture him in her head or dreamed of him, he always looked the same. Exactly like the last time she’d seen him. With those beautiful green eyes full of love and that smile she liked to call her smile and a promise to “be back before she knew it” (the only promise he ever broke).

Objectively - he’s attractive. Hot, even. Hailey can see that. She thinks everyone in the bar can probably see that.
But it doesn’t explain the prickle under her skin when his eyes meet hers, nor the pull she feels towards him and he seems to feel it too.
And so they make an arrangement: no strings attached fun when he’s home. It’s as simple as that, or it at least starts that way.

A single tear slips free from her eye, and it’s not just the car, is the thing.
It’s the car and the fact that she’s a month behind on her rent and the shitty ex boyfriend and the fact that she’s all alone in a tiny little town, the kind of town she swore she’d never end up in. It’s the fact that she has no friends and no family, and that she’s basically starting over at 30 fucking years old, sleeping on a mattress on the floor and applying for every job she can find.
Somehow, though, she channels all of her frustration into hatred for her car, and she’s pounding on the wheel and screaming like a crazy person when possibly the hottest person she’s ever seen in her life walks up to her door and raises an eyebrow at her.
“Um,” she says, rolling down her window and grimacing as the man stares at her with his eyebrow raised. “My car broke down.”

“Whenever that may be,” he says, and then he’s raising the glass to his lips and taking a long swig. Lucy mirrors the movement and then licks her lips, the tequila burning down her throat as Tim stares at her, his own lips wet with the whiskey he’s clutching in his hand.
“Tim,” she breathes, because despite the fact that he hasn’t let her be afraid yet, she is a little bit.
“Lucy,” he murmurs.
She doesn’t know who moves first, just that, later, it keeps her up at night.
