“Qifrey.” Olruggio’s voice floats in the air.
Qifrey turns to look at him, and feels his breath catch in his throat. Olruggio is stunning in the dim light, his skin glowing with embers, his eyes gleaming with strands of heat, with the years shared between them.
“Qifrey,” he says again, his voice as warm as the fire between them, as familiar as the stars. “I love you.”
Qifrey’s heart bursts.

Feeling bold, Theresa pushes Henry’s hair back from his forehead, wiping some of the sweat, and gasps at the heat. She checks with the back of her hand and feels the fever roiling under his skin.
The man is watching her intently, but she ignores him in favor of addressing Henry directly.

Hubert takes his outstretched hand, and nods.

Summary
Something, equal parts wariness and weariness, stirs in Olruggio’s eyes whenever Qifrey makes some reference to the future — when he indirectly promises a tomorrow, a next week, an ‘after your commissions are done’. It’s the subtlest thing, a flicker, a spark; someone who knew him less well might not pick up on it. But Qifrey knows Olruggio as well as he knows himself, and he can hardly in good conscience begrudge him his flinch of cynicism. Not when it’s wholly his own fault for having put it there.
Fool you once, shame on me. Fool you twice, still shame on me. Fool you thrice… well, if it’s any consolation whatsoever, I was fooling myself most of all.

Summary
He thinks it ironic that Olruggio’s kindness is his salvation and his undoing—the link that keeps him alive and the torturous burden that prevents his peace.
He ought to be angry at him. He thinks a part of him is.
But time tempers all emotions, and, even back then, Qifrey couldn’t find the energy to stay angry at him for long. It was Olruggio’s nature, after all, to sacrifice himself on the altar if it meant saving one more life.

“I… I feel so embarrassed," Coco whined, blinking rapidly before swiping at her tears again. Qifrey quieted the urge to take the kerchief and treat her more gently than she was treating herself. He settled for smoothing strands of her hair away from her flushed face.
Something about Olly’s phrasing, or tone, perhaps, caught in Qifrey’s mind.
“I know,” Olly soothed again, his hand still tracing down her back and over the tips of Qifrey’s fingers. “Trust me, I know. But it’ll pass.”
“You… someone turned you down?” She peered at Olruggio, biting her lip when he nodded. The snag in Qifrey’s mind ripped into a gaping hole.
