Summary
Vaelis Valcere comes from an old but crumbling legacy. His family takes a gamble with a sea-faring family, the Thornes, who have been elevated by the Crown for their ability to cross and survive the Shatterline reef in the dark Threnoth Sea. Both of the eldest sons are expected to get along.
At the Thornelands, Vaelis takes up a practice sword from the sparring field and tests the weight and cut of the blade. The family quickly sees how his skill as a swordsman could be useful in training their son Garrick, who has only just been elevated to heir after his elder brother Brennar fails to return from a Shatterline voyage.
They have much they can learn from one another.
