  Summary

  Barely anybody knew about the astrophage problem yet. Ryland was still teaching sixth-grade science at Grover Cleveland Middle, enjoying himself thoroughly. There was another teacher, the seventh-grade science teacher. They taught in the same hallway, since they taught the same subject. Occasionally, she would come by, and they would sit and talk, mainly about students. They were quite fond of each other, but they were both too socially awkward to do anything other than be vague acquaintances.
