Summary
“Okay, let’s try this,” Aaron says. “Tell me five things you can see.”
“You,” Kevin says. It’s half a gasp. Aaron nods, raising one finger. It bolsters Kevin to see it, so he scrambles around for more. “The balcony. Riko. The French press. Your shitty sneakers.”
Aaron, with four fingers raised, quietly says, “Riko’s not here, Kevin.”
“What?” Kevin looks at him wildly. He blinks, trying to steady his gaze. Fuck. Okay. Yeah. Fuck. Aaron. He’s here with Aaron, which means Riko can’t be here, because they’ve never met. They belong to two different spheres of his life. “Uh. Your eyes.”
“I don’t think you’re meant to say me for three out of your five objects,” Aaron says, but his ears are tinging pink again. Kevin is endlessly fascinated by it.
Kevin Day makes a comeback.

Summary
Aaron is sick of Valentine’s Day and it’s not even here yet. The campus looks like some sickly saccharine sweet cupid projectile vomited all over it. Never in his life has he known PSU to have gone so overboard on such a minor holiday.
Worse is seeing all the happy couples and knowing he’s going to spend the day alone. Until Kevin makes him a proposition.
“No expectations of any kind. No gifts, no dates. We just take turns doing what we want for a full day, and the other person has to go along with it. No questions, no judgment.”
“Yeah, alright,” Aaron says after a few beats. “I’ll be your fake Valentine.”

Summary
“It’s Aaron.”
Nicky’s face grows serious at the mention of Aaron’s name. He steps closer to Kevin.
“What’s wrong with Aaron?”
“He wasn’t with Katelyn over the Christmas break. He was at the Nest.”
“What?” Matt and Nicky’s voices ring out in synchronicity.
“Neil and Aaron both. I’ve- Coach is on the phone. He can tell you better than I can.” Kevin sets the phone on the table between them as he doesn’t trust himself to keep a grip on it, putting it on speaker.

Summary
“I missed you this summer,” he says casually, which is terrible. It’s so fucking Kevin—he won’t say a nice word upon pain of death on the court, and he barely knows how to say thank you when Aaron chucks an energy bar at him to make sure he doesn’t fucking pass out at practice or fixes his bandages for him (in Aaron’s defence, he only took over because Kevin’s attempts were incompetent and therefore annoying, not because he wanted to) or whatever the fuck help he’s providing the walking irritant, but sometimes he’s just so honest that it makes Aaron want to shove his head into the school pool and scream underwater.
“Uh-huh,” Aaron says, because he’s not that easy. “Yeah, I’m sure you had a lot of time to just think about your schoolmates when you were lying on the decks of yachts and elongating your spine.”
Kevin pauses, processing that. “So you noticed?” he says, rubbing the nape of his neck.
Aaron stops, turning to look at him incredulously. “You look like the Lighthouse of Alexandria,” he says. Kevin’s face starts to break out into a slow smile, so Aaron turns on his heel and starts speed-walking forward.
kevin gets taller. aaron copes.

Summary
Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”
+++
Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?
