In another life he thinks he could have been a father— and a better one than Daniel, at that. He can see the appeal in taking something young and empty and filling it with all the things he believes a person should have. He was young once, and emptier than Daniel has ever been. Despite everything he remains grateful to every hand that ever pulled him out from nothingness.

Then came the matter of turning their new house into a home.
Daniel, hard-wired to think like an addict, couldn’t help but find all the little nooks and crannies where he, in another life, would’ve stashed his drugs. He chose not to tell Armand about those thoughts. Besides, as a vampire the best rush he could hope for was the one he achieved from draining humans under the influence—couldn’t very well set up a crack den in his cupboard, now could he.
