Well this is a tricky situation, he thinks, when he answers his door to find his landlord. The owner of the whole Capeside tenement block, standing so starkly out of place in Martinaise in his expensive shirt and silk tie, sweat beading on his forehead.
When the man greets him by name – his real name, the one he’s so careful to keep from clients, sweeping for stray papers before every visitor – his stomach sinks suddenly and horribly. He gives a smile, and invites him to come in. He’s seen him around the building in the evenings lately, made eye contact once or twice from a distance. He has a gut feeling. In his line of work he’s learned not to question gut feelings.
