As he’d spent his last few moments on the Paopu tree with her, he’d had no immediate regrets, nothing weighing his heart down. He’d felt light and at ease, the calm of a job well done. It was only in those final few seconds, with his pulse beginning to pound in his ears and the world fading out at the edges that he’d glanced away from her tears and caught the briefest flash of silver hair in his waning peripheral vision.
