Maybe it was because two years on he really had come to terms with the death of his MLH career. Maybe it was because he wanted the last gasp of what his life should have been. Maybe it was because at McGill too many people knew his family, knew his sob story, knew that two years of juniors only meant two years of a scholarship, but in America hockey didn’t matter like it did here and the NHL moved on fast even when you go from top draft pick to nothing in the blink of an eye. And maybe it was because he and Ilya Rozanov were supposed to climb the mountain together but instead he had two gold medals, he was first overall, he was going to be rookie of the year…and he had kissed Shane in that gym like he was starving for it, like he knew Shane was too.
It didn’t matter why he did it really, only that he said yes.
