"Are you children lost?" The voice was cheery, feminine and just slightly off putting. The figure, a tall woman, came closer and he could see that she was holding a candle in her hand to guide her. In the flicker of candlelight, he could see that she had long blonde hair.
"Yes. Our mother left us and-"
"Stop!" He hissed as his sister tried to speak and gripped her arm tightly, causing his sister to whimper. A flash of guilt flooded him, and he whispered a small apology. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see the woman's lips turn upward just small bit. Not quite a smile but almost.
"What are your names?" Neither of them replied, causing the woman to sigh. "My name is Caroline."
