    Summary

‘Don’t you have a favourite?’ he asked.

Lyonel leaned in, far too close to be proper. Maekar could smell him, rose perfume from Lys, woodsmoke and beneath it all, him, something vaguely salty, like brine. Of course, there was salt water as much as stag blood in the Baratheons, ruling here braced against the crash of the sea, and the shriek of gulls overhead. Even with all the chatter and merriment in the great hall Maekar swore he could hear the bay beyond.

‘They’re all my favourites,’ said Lyonel, voice dropping. He set down his wine glass. ‘Tell me. Do you like dancing?’

Maekar leaned back in his chair. ‘No I fucking don’t.’

In the aftermath of the spring sickness, with the kingdom on its knees, Maekar Targaryen, now next in line for the iron throne, attends a tourney at Storm’s End. All he wants is to be left alone, but duty is calling. That, and a stag prince has his eye on him…

    Summary

Baelor Breakspear survives Ashford by an inch of bone, and Dunk rides to Summerhall with Egg as his squire. Dunk keeps waiting for Prince Maekar to remember he's supposed to hate him and throw him out. Any day now, surely. He'd stake his sword on it.

Little did he know, he'd lose his sword.

While Dunk anxiously awaits his dismissal, the rest of Summerhall; from a convalescing Baelor down to the stable boys; is watching Prince Maekar perform the least self-aware adoption in history, and running a betting pool on when Dunk will realise he's already family.

(Alternatively: the 7 times Dunk didn't realise he'd become a Maekarling, and +1 time he did.)

    Summary

“King Baelor now,” Lyonel interrupted his thoughts, and now raised his glass in a toast and urged Dunk to do the same, wine sloshing from glass to glass, red droplets falling upon the table. “Long may he reign and whatnot. Was almost taken by the plague himself, last I heard. Baelor twice-dead they should call him– that blow to the head should’ve been the end of him! He never fully recovered, did you hear? That’s what the dissenters say. A cripple as a king.”

“He’s not crippled,” Dunk said, fiercely, putting his cup down hard on the table. The relief was heady enough to set his fingers trembling. “And he’ll be a great king. He’s a good man.”
