Summary
Maybe the reason they usually only do this when they're drunk is because it makes it easier to cope with the reality that they like each other beyond the physical. Maybe they hold a deep affection and care for each other but they're both too scared and too fucked up to look it in the face, much less stare it down.
It's unfortunate and perhaps it leaves a bit of a pit in someone’s stomach but the beauty is, it hardly matters when they're making out half-naked and half-hard in the Yorozuya’s living room for the second time that month.

Every single time someone tried to find room in Hijikata’s life, tried to enter his house, he shut the door on them. Even with Mitsuba, he could never really let her in. Gintoki, however, had brought his own set of carpentry tools, set up in his backyard while he was completely unaware and at work, and built an add-on to his house. Without permission from Hijikata, certainly without a permit from the city. Saying, ‘you can’t shut the door on me, I built my own door’.
The warmth of Gintoki’s body pressed against his, the smell of his very cheap shampoo. The glint in his eyes, his smirk when he knew he was right and knew even better that Hijikata wouldn’t admit it. His smile and laughter when Hijikata did something stupid, something embarrassing. The ways that Gintoki made him feel like it was okay to be himself, it was okay to feel comfortable, time and time again.
“Hijikata?”
Why did this seem so simple for Gintoki? Why the fuck was it so not so simple for him?
“Yeah? Hey, I'm happy for you. I’m gonna go make dinner.”
