“I do,” he bit, the smirk on the lad’s face did not falter. He seemed to take it as an invitation to is down with Simon, he pulled a chair out and placed himself down.
“What ye reading?” the lad asked, leaning against his forearms on the table, leaning closer to Simon. He could smell the obnoxious sent of Lynx, not that it was hard, when the apocalypse came, that smell would still linger in every secondary school changing room and teen lads’ bedrooms.

In those letters, he had described a sweet face, long blond hair, a girl he knew from photographs taken years ago. He hadn’t known. No one had corrected him—not until the blond told him, after that fateful wedding night—“If you call me Simone again, I’ll kill you. My name is Simon.”
He lingered in the doorway for a moment, watching the curled-up figure beneath the blankets before leaving for the kitchen, leaving him alone. He glanced back one last time—the hunched posture, strands of hair peeking out from under the sheets, a small whimper beneath the cold white fabric—and quietly closed the door behind him, defeated by that coldness.
