    Summary

Baoxiang had just unburied a jar of fragrant wine and settled himself in the roots of a peach tree to drink and watch the sunset when a martial god crash-landed in his backyard.
“No,” he said, very firmly, as his brother raised his head and regarded him with a beseeching expression.

After a very brief stint as heavenly official, Baoxiang is enjoying a quiet life among like-minded people, away from the backstabbing and politicking of the court. When Ouyang is accused of murder and he agrees to investigate he's dragged back into the world he'd left behind.

    Summary

“I’m thirty years old. And now that dad…” he trails off. He doesn’t want to talk about their father. “I need to marry. I need an heir.”

“You’re not a medieval lord,” Baoxiang says. “I need an heir. Honestly. Can’t you just go clubbing or download a dating app like everyone else?”

“This will be faster,” Esen says, because it will be. “I’ll be engaged in less than six months. And it’ll be good publicity for the company.”

“Sure,” Baoxiang says, “the board and the shareholders will love the CEO being a show pony on World’s Most Homoerotic Heterosexual Dating Show.”

    Summary

“Oh, yes, that eunuch. He busted in and brought you back here.” Wang Baoxiang turns his fan back on himself and, with his other hand, pours water from a ewer at the bedside into a little cup. “You were cut with a shard of spirit metal when the cockpit was blown open. The technicians said they found him in there trying to plug up the wound—there was quite a lot of blood, apparently. They had to drag him out. You don’t remember that?”

Esen’s head spins with the effort of processing this. “When you say he brought me back, you mean…?”

Wang Baoxiang lifts the back of his head with one hand and holds the cup to his lips, urging him to drink. “In the Grey Wolf, yes.”

Ouyang contemplates his newfound power and thinks back on his ascent into the ranks of the Iron Nobility.

    Summary

After his death, Esen-Temur wakes up in his ten-year-old body, just weeks before the extermination of the Ouyang clan, with all the memories of the next decade and a half of his life.

He doesn't necessarily do anything useful with this knowledge, but that might be for the best.

With effort, he cracked his eyes open. Unfamiliar faces thronged around him, in the familiar livery of the residence of the prince of Henan. “Ouyang,” he gasped, the word tearing at his throat. “General Ouyang, where is he?”

The touches returned, gentler than before. “Don’t worry, my lord,” a soft, soothing voice said. “There’s no reason to be afraid any more. The Great Khan has him. He must be dead by now.”

The words were like a blade, slipping back into his wound. He could barely breathe around them, the white-hot pain they brought. Dead already. How could the Great Khan have captured him so swiftly? How long had Esen been unconscious? How had he even survived? He was so sure he’d been facing his death, held close in Ouyang’s arms, trembling as his warm, delicate fingers wiped the blood from his face.

    Summary

Instead of recapturing Bianliang, Esen proposes he and Ouyang embark on a journey across the steppe.

"I would not go entirely alone,” Esen said quietly. “I would ask you to come with me. There is no-one else whom I find so capable and trustworthy. My best general, whose arrow always finds its target." Esen looked at him, eyes pleading.

It was then that Ouyang recognised the mysterious machinations of fate, the unspooled thread weaving together to form the same pattern as before but in a different manner.
