He had hoped that the south would leave his family be, but when his foster father Jon Arryn is reported dead right after the betrothal of Rhaenys Targaryen and Wilias Tyrell is announced he knows that his family will be sucked in to a war he wished would never come.

Lyanna Stark is looking to escape a prospective alliance with House Baratheon. And those who seek shall find. To be given a crown besides, far from being a hardship, is actually quite appealing.
Or, that AU in which it is Lyanna who has Southron ambitions, and they run far deeper than her father's.

Summary
Lyanna Stark decides against taking flight from her marriage, and begrudgingly marries Robert Baratheon. Within the year, she becomes a widow at the young age of seventeen, with half the realm believing she had a hand in it. Now free from the bonds of marriage, and her place at Storm's End, Lyanna returns to Winterfell with no intention of remarrying.
Rhaegar Targaryen is widowed when Elia Martell dies in childbed, attempting to give her husband his third child. The child, a girl, is lost alongside her mother. The prophecy and the realm demands that he remarry, calling for a flurry of young maidens to vie for his attentions, and one who is unsure if she desired his attention at all.
Yet this pair had almost known intimacy before. Whether they shall know it again, only the Gods can say.

Summary
King Aerys Targaryen's extreme paranoia delays Rhaegar's betrothal to Elia Martell until he is twenty-two. But when the King suspects the Starks of plotting against him, he breaks the betrothal to promise his eldest son to the noble house's only daughter, Lyanna Stark.
The arrangement does not sit well with either party. The fourteen year old Lyanna resists her cage and her new husband; the older Rhaegar finds himself discomforted by her immaturity and willful nature. The king's madness worsens, and intrigue further interrupts the already volatile atmosphere of King's Landing.
In the North, Brandon's reckless behavior puts him, and Ned, in an uncomfortable situation, while thousands of miles south, the Martells stews over the insult paid to Elia. Somewhere in the middle, a storm lord still desires the girl he was meant to have while a lioness plots her way into power.

Summary
Robert's Rebellion did a great deal of damage to the Seven Kingdoms and the reign of the Targaryens but not as much as one would think. It's four years later and as Robert Baratheon has little concern for keeping the Kingdoms together, a certain spider takes it upon himself to give the realm the kind of peace that can only be had under Targaryen Rule.
*Varys isn't the main character, just one that ties everyone together.
