Ruby did her best to not cause trouble. Even at the age of eight she understood the gravity of the situation the world now found itself in. There was almost nothing left, what humans still lived only barely scraped by on dwindling resources. Kids like her were seen as nothing but another mouth to feed. Most of her brothers and sisters treated her like some kind of burden since she couldn’t do most tasks. But Ruby didn’t mind too much; she knew one day she’d prove them wrong, one day she would be useful.
