Will shifted uncomfortably on the bed, aware of every little thing now: his rumpled clothes, the way his breathing wasn’t steady yet, how there was no hint of their usual banter to keep things at a safe distance. His face heated up. He hated how exposed he felt.

Coop clenched his jaw at the response, but he kept his mouth shut. There was no point in trying to explain. Romano had already written him off, and his mind felt too fogged to argue anyway. He watched as Romano stalked off toward another patient, the sound of his footsteps ringing in his ears. The weight in his chest tightened, but he didn’t allow himself to acknowledge it. Not now.

Dennis didn’t remember the last time he’d felt this bad. His body was hot with fever, his stomach churned violently, and the cramped space wasn’t helping at all. On top of all that, Mac had been acting weird toward him all day. Every time Dennis tried to start a conversation, Mac would give him a short, clipped answer and turn away like he had somewhere more important to be—which Dennis knew wasn’t true. But he couldn’t figure out why Mac was so distant all of a sudden... Hell, he couldn’t think about much of anything with this pounding headache.

In school, everyone knew Nick Cooper had asthma. Unfortunately, every school, from elementary to medical, had bullies. So when Coop finally transfers to Chicago in the second year of his residency, he decides nobody should know this time, and tries to hide his medical condition. Unsurprisingly, this is a bad idea, especially in an ER full of asthma triggers. But much to Coop's surprise, there's an unlikely ally to him at County General.
