Summary
"Are you mine, brother?" she asks. "Or am I yours?"
There's heat in her voice, though it's tempered by whatever this is that's troubling her. Cesare turns her around in his arms and leans in, touching his forehead to hers. "Is there a difference?" he asks. What does it matter, as long as they are each other's?

Summary
"I am what time and circumstance have made me."
The year of 1920 was a modern world in Atlantic City. World War I had just ended and women were just about to win the right to vote. But for Cesare Borgia, born to Italian-Spanish immigrants, it was a time to prove himself. After returning home from the trenches in time for his sister's wedding day, he is disturbed to discover that his father promoted his brother Juan in their illegal liquor operation. Despite proving himself in battle, Cesare is once again disregarded for his incompetent brother.
The only thing that hasn't changed is his relationship with his little sister Lucrezia. Only 20 years old when he left, Cesare arrives on her wedding day to find she is a pawn in Rodrigo's effort to expand his business. Though no one is good enough for Lucrezia to marry, Cesare especially harbors no love for Giovanni Sforza and promises that he will pay for every ill against his sister. But even more difficult than his rising ambitions to take over the family business is forgetting the sins of his past. And most significant: the fast growing and consuming feelings he had been trying desperately to forget.
You can't be half a gangster.
