Ilay’s fingers dug into Taeui’s arms, the pressure now verging on discomfort. Taeui inhaled sharply but didn’t pull away. “Ilay,” he continued softly, “there’s a chance I may never present. I’ve already passed the usual age.” He hesitated, the unspoken fear lodged in his chest Will you leave me?
Though the words remained unsaid, Ilay’s expression shifted. Taeui wasn’t sure if he was betraying his fear through his expression, but Ilay had always been able to read him with unnerving accuracy.
“Leave you?” Ilay’s voice cracked, harsh, and incredulous. “You?” His grip faltered for a moment, his brows furrowed deeply.

Taeui never wanted to be the last ten men standing at the end of the world. The mere thought of surviving without his alpha—his guardian, or worse—watching him die before his eyes—was so painful to the point of madness.
Once, Taeui believed he could endure—would be happy to endure without Ilay by his side. But when the situation escalated, became too real he found himself trapped in a nightmare he couldn't wake from, even breathing felt impossible if he couldn't sense Ilay's presence just two feet away.
Ilay—that possessive, inhuman bastard—was just as stubborn. He refused to leave Taeui during the final moments of his fading life, protecting him until the end. Breaking him with a tenderness so agonizingly sweet that Taeui wanted the pain to stretch on forever.
And so—Taeui let himself be crushed in Ilay's arms as they watched the world crumble before them.

Long ago, the world bloomed with color: vibrant, radiant, alive.

"Then we give them soulmates," one whispered. "A destined bond. Let love be their key."
"And if they ignore it? If they break it?"
"We’ll make them suffer until they understand."
“One aches, the other heals. One breaks, the other bleeds.”
“And only then,” they decreed, “will color return.”
Thus began an age of longing, where love was the only light. And every story since has been a search for that one soul who brings color back to the world.
