Thirty-something Nick and Charlie meet as trainee therapists at a psychology practice, and sparks fly immediately. Nick spent his life in an environment where he could never fully be himself, so he suppresses his emotions and shuns vulnerability like a pro. He still has a lot to learn, but he’s sincere and determined – if a little terrified – and when he loves, he does so fiercely and unapologetically. Charlie’s been through a lot, but he’s quite far along in his healing journey after therapy. These days, he’s no longer avoidant (no, really) and swears by his tried-and-true radical honesty policy, alongside a rock-solid coping style grounded in gallows humour and rationalisation. Cue a slow-burn emotional romance with two people learning to love and be loved as they are, lots of personal growth, an unflinching look at the harrowing realities of trauma, and a focus on the gritty, quietly powerful work of recovery.

Summary
Charlie has no need to turn back the clock nearly a decade.But when he receives an email from a charity shop worker who's come into possession of a letter intended for him when he was still a teen, he can't help but wonder if he should rekindle a connection with the estranged ex who sent it. All the while, he grapples with a longstanding belief that he's not good enough, yet, to deserve what he wants.
Charlie's at his desk now, the knuckles of his free hand tapping the dark wood surface as he stares out the window at a woman watching a child toddle across the grass in the courtyard below. He realises, then, he has no idea what kind of place Nick lives in. Maybe his building houses more families than Charlie's; or maybe he's in a lower-level flat with a private garden.
Charlie has no way of knowing. He hasn't received a single picture that would help him fill in the world Nick inhabits. He's painting one himself, as if by numbers, every message guiding him, however slowly, to a colour he can only hope is right.
Squeezing his eyes shut, Charlie counts down from five. Then:
"Would you wanna visit here — me, I mean?"
