    Summary

After spending a year abroad, Colin Bridgerton returned during summer break and joined his family at Aubrey Hall. Whilst away, Colin realized his heart belonged to his best friend, Penelope Featherington through the many letters they exchanged during his travels. His grand plans to romance her and win her affections was going better than he could have ever imagined; that was until a summer soiree hosted by his brother brought an unwelcomed guest who threatened his family and any future happiness he had hoped for.

    “What has happened?” Anthony pressed.

“I did what I had to,” it was all Colin could think to say. Anthony took Colin’s hands in his, turning them over noting the wounds spackled across his knuckles and smatters of blood that covered his skin and clothes.

“Who?” His eyes were wide and intense. It was his protective nature; Colin knew his brother would do anything for his family. He could see Anthony was already anticipating his response without even knowing the occurrence.

“Lord Anderson,” Colin breathed out, rage returning to his voice, “he had Pen…he was hurting her, I had to stop him.”

    “Where?” Anthony demanded.

    “The conservatory.”

    “Take me,” he said sternly.

    Summary

“Read it again Pen,” Colin said softly.

She looked back at him, eyes wide and blinking, biting her lower lip, drawing in his attention.

Until today, not an impure thought had passed through his mind of Penelope. He suddenly felt like the wind was knocked out of him. His eyes snapped up to hers, her blue eyes wide and blinking rapidly. He wasn’t sure what to say. It felt like the air had changed around them. All he could think about was her in that moment. Touching her hair, caressing her cheeks, kissing her lips.

He took a deep breath. He could not make sense of the impulses he was having, “please, read it again.”

She swallowed, turned back to the page, and started reading it again. He listened to her sweet voice recite the words of Byron. Did she pick this poem on purpose? ‘How could she’ he reasoned, ‘she’s never seen this book, how would she know’. He was so lost in thought; he didn’t realize she had finished. He wasn’t ready for her to stop reading, what was the last part? She looked over at him again. Had she moved closer to him? Or was he leaning into her?

“Again,” He said, wondering if she could hear him as it came out almost as a whisper.

    Summary

Summer made the debacle easier to forget, all the parties and the heat. In the two months it’s steeped, the interaction dwindled down to nothing more than another funny story she can overdramatize to strangers. Sometimes, on dates and more often, at parties.

She opens it up with, “This famous actor once offered to propose to me, but, like, not really.”

Or: Aleksander Morozov played Mr. Darcy in a movie.
