Summary
Thetis had not begged him to change his mind when Achilles accepted to go to war. 'Why would you choose war and bloodshed when it is already promised in your veins?' She had wanted to ask. But any common fool could see the adoration in his greenfield eyes when he gazed at that Opus boy. Achilles never answered and she never had to ask. 'He is the greatest thing to me; if he goes anywhere, I have no choice but to kiss the footprints in his stead.'

“It was so long ago.”
“I know,” Patroclus nods. “That’s why I wanted to see if your answer changed.”
He does not say the obvious, but it lingers around them uncomfortably: was it worth what we suffered?
Achilles cannot stand looking into Patroclus’s eyes any longer, it hurts to. There is still something so warm in them, a home that he has no right to enter. Because there is an indisputable answer to it all. No, he wants to shout.
Achilles wants to regret his decisions but emotions are making that hard. Patroclus wants to help, sort of.
