“Call girl, right?”. Brooke checks, despite her certainty.
“Correct-“. Nina nods.
“-She’s good, I’m sure. An old friend of Yvie’s, apparently. Pay her a nice bit on the side, she’ll keep quiet”. She reassures.
Brooke might believe her, but turns her nose up regardless. She’s sceptical, always is when a break in routine is suggested, and picks up the card, analyses it further. There’s nothing more to find - it’s plain black, gold embossed lettering - and she slots it wordlessly into her purse, drops said purse back onto the bar.

Brooke spends more money on Vanessa in the span of six months than she thinks she’s spent on herself in her lifetime.
More than she knows she’s spent on herself in her lifetime.
And it shouldn’t feel liberating, but it does. Vanessa thanks Brooke in all of the ways that she has since she’s known her.
She doesn’t blush or bat an eyelid when Brooke swipes her card for her, drops what Vanessa would have once classed as a years worth of rent on a handbag, a gown that she wears only once to a dinner; they spend their time giggling into glasses of aged wine and Brooke thinks that it’s worth it.

“I want you to meet Nina”. Brooke blurts.
Vanessa regards her with a frown, and then a grin.
“Ok”. She beams.
“She invited us to her place next weekend, you in?”.
Brooke pulls Vanessa down next to her on the couch with a tug of her hand. A groan of protest leaves Vanessa’s lips. She’s too warm, and so is Brooke, but she sprawls out atop of her anyway. Her legs are kicked over the arm of said couch and she licks slowly at the popsicle that’s melting blue down her wrist.

Brooke’s reminded that Vanessa loves her, and that she loves her right back in each gentle word. Vanessa will tell her not to forget about reservations that they have in a restaurant downtown and Brooke’s heart will swell twice the size. They’ll be at said restaurant and Vanessa will order for Brooke because she remembers, always does.

Summary
Nina holds her annual company party a week before Christmas.
Brooke is invited, naturally, and brings Vanessa because of course she does.
Nina teases that she knows they come as a pair these days and Brooke doesn’t have it in her to argue. Nina is right and all of them know it. Vanessa is as concrete in her life as anything she’s ever known and it’s nice, she likes it.
Brooke understands that Vanessa does, too, and they discuss their excitement for the evening over a glass of wine. Vanessa’s sat in their dressing room, lipstick bullet in hand.
She paints her lips scarlet and it’s a dash of fire within the cream walls surrounding them. Brooke eyes her from the corner of her own mirror and lets a content smile grace her face.
