Chapter Text
Luz moved around the kitchen almost in a daze..
It has been two weeks since the restaurant burnt down, two weeks since she invited Amity into her flat for the first time.
And yet it still felt slightly surreal.
She glanced at the clock on the wall. Amity was due to arrive in about half an hour..
For two weeks, they continued to meet like this..having lunch together but today Luz would change that. It was nice..but she wanted a more stereotypical date, with food she didn't have to prepare herself.
Not that she minded doing that, but their meetups were quite..awkward.
They were both civil and as Luz by now knew..nervous, very nervous.
However, she would not let that stop her..onwards towards a better future! Luz wanted them to get closer, for things to be less awkward.
She was going to ask Amity out on a date..today..after they finished their food..
Luz nodded to herself, steeling her resolve..
This would not be the same as yesterday or the day before when she chickened out..
She would actually ask today.
Luz took a step back, surveying her preparation..everything was ready. Looking at it all, she was kinda considering broadening her job search to kitchen positions as well, as this was quite fun..
That, her for now failing job hunt brought her mood down a little but she pushed it aside, instead concentrating on more pleasant things..like a certain green-head.
Luz smiled to herself, after spending more time with Amity. She knew that Amity was a little bit..weird, not that Luz minded that, she had no right to call anyone weird considering the things she has done..
She sighed imagining what Amity was doing right now..
Probably finishing up at work..
Amity allowed herself a small smile as she put her things away. She was done for the day and now..it was time to go...she even finished earlier than usual..getting much more motivated about this dull job, having such a great treat at the end of it.
"What are you so happy about?"
Immediately she froze, schooling her expression to an emotionless mask as she slowly glanced to the doors of her office.
"Boscha.." she bit, her eyes narrowing, "I see knocking is still a concept completely foreign to you.."
Boscha snorted, shaking her head, "And I see you are still as stuck up as you ever were..how about a 'Hi, oh dear friend of mine, haven't seen you in a year or two I am so glad to see you again.'"
Amity just stared, uncertain how to respond to that.
...
" *Sigh* You are impossible, Amity," said Boscha, rubbing the base of her nose, "But I am glad actually...I was kinda afraid.." the girl let that sentence hang unfinished, but Amity knew what her friend wanted to say.
"That I would cave in to my mother?"
"A lesser demon would have..."
"Good thing I am no lesser demon then.."
Boscha smiled, nodding to that.
"Still," she looked around the cramped office, "I know it is killing you to work here."
Amity crossed her arms, thinking about it.
Yes..it really was killing her, up until very recently she felt as if she was being worn down. But due to certain developments..she couldn't help herself but be little glad for it. This way she could visit Luz every day after work.
"Not really.."
Boscha frowned at her, "Oh come on Blight, we both know.."
"I..." started Amity, interrupting Boscha, should she tell her? She had no clue how Boscha would react, her friend was truly unpredictable. But, Amity kinda wanted someone to talk to..about Luz..it was hard not having anyone, not that she would ever admit that out loud.
"I actually found someone...I like being able to visit her every day.."
Boscha's eyes blew wide open.
"You..you, What? Who is she?? One of our classmates? Skara? Someone else? Do I know her?"
Amity sighed, "She is a human."
"A human..."
"Yeaa.."
...
"Nice!" exclaimed Boscha with a grin, "Can I meet her? Is she a witch? Goth? Both?"
Amity blinked, she did not expect that reaction..
"What are you so shocked about??"
"I did not think you would just accept that.."
Boscha facepalmed, "You do remember what my own preferences are I presume...do I have room to judge Anyone??"
Amity grimaced, banishing that particular conversation into the void of memory.
"Plus, what is important is that you are happy.."
Suddenly Amity almost felt tears swelling up in her eyes, "Thanks.."
"I am pretty sure you are the only one who.."
Boscha's smile faltered a little, "Hmm..yea..I guess yours wouldn't be too excited about a human...how did you meet her? I mean if she isn't a witch.."
"Well.." started Amity, leaning against her desk, "She..she was actually a waitress in a restaurant, I visited..and I.."
"Fell in love with her completely," finished Boscha matter of factly.
Amity blushed down to her roots, but did not dispute her friend's words.
"Wow..really??"
...
"Okay, I am really invested now..you said you met her in a restaurant, what were you doing there? I do not remember you ever frequenting human restaurants.."
"Well.." started Amity slowly, unsure if she really wanted to spill the beans, "I started going to those restaurants to get some kind of excitement..with the job you know..and also, my mother hates humans..so going there was kinda.."
"Therapeutic," finished Boscha for her, to which Amity nodded.
"I visited a fair amount of restaurants before I met her, but they were all kinda..like places where my mother would go, but one day I decided to visit a more 'lowly' restaurant."
Amity crossed her arms, looking at the building in front of her with a skeptical eye.
This place looked..unique.
With the restaurants she visited before they felt almost familiar, there were no demons eating or serving, but otherwise there was not much difference, but something like this.
This was something new..Amity wasn't sure what she thought about it just yet..
But out of nothing better to do..she would try.
Slowly she opened the doors, noticing she had to do so herself...as there was no doorman.
"Welcome to the world of burgers!"
Amity blinked, looking up, her eyes meeting the chocolate brown eyes of the waitress.
For a second they looked at each-other, before the waitress looked away.
"I will take you to your table!" she said, her voice slightly higher than before.
Amity could feel herself nodding as she followed the girl, almost unable to take her eyes off her.
As soon as they arrived and she sat down, the waitress gave her a menu.
"Take your time," she smiled and hurried away.
Amity watched her leave, before snapping to look at the menu, remembering her etiquette training.
It was rude to stare.
Amity herself had a hard time saying what exactly was so..incredible..about this girl, but Amity already knew she would be coming back tomorrow at least...and she didn't even taste the food.
Talking about the food however, she was lost..completely..Amity never heard about any of these foods, so she had no clue what to order.
After about ten minutes of staring and agonizing, she heard footsteps and looking up saw the waitress again, with a smile on her face and a small notebook in hand.
"What would you like to order?"
Amity delved into the menu again, trying to find something, anything..but at that moment it seemed the girl caught on.
"Ehm..would you like me to recommend something?"
Amity blinked, before slowly nodding, handing the menu back.
She could see a red tint on the waitresses cheeks, "Ehm..okay, what are you in the mood for?"
Amity slowly shook her head, which made the waitress blush even harder. At the time Amity didn't realize that her rather intense stare was..doing things..
Slowly the waitress started talking about the food options, listing what was in stock and what most people ordered..
It took Amity about three sentences before she was lost completely, the actual words and the meanings of them escaping her as she was completely taken by her voice. It felt as if she was floating..
In the end, when the waitresses finished and Amity snapped back to reality, she just ordered the first thing she remembered due to an interesting picture of the food from the menu, not caring about what she would get at all.
And that's how she became a regular..not knowing when the girl was working she came every day.
"Devils ass Blight, you're a riot!" exclaimed Boscha, laughing.
"I do not think laughter is appropriate.." pouted Amity, looking away, feeling betrayed by her own friend..
"Oh come on, you fell into that way too quick, way too hard..for it to not be funny."
Amity pouted harder.
"Owww..come on Blighty..You know I am only making fun of you.."
"Yea, that's the problem..and don't call me 'Blighty'."
"Ohhhh, is she the only one who can call you that?" Teased Boscha, wiggling her eyebrows.
Amity immediately blushed scarlet, shaking her head,"N-NO, she..she doesn't even know my last name..."
Now this caught Boscha by surprise, "She doesn't??" Then she frowned, "What else doesn't she know?" She asked, suddenly becoming serious.
Amity looked away.
...
"Does she know you are a demon?"
...
"That you are really rich?"
...
"Kinda famous?"
...
"Amity..."
The young demoness put her hands up, "I am taking my time with that stuff!" She defended.
But Boscha waved that away, "I get that, but there are some things you can't keep hidden, you can keep the money and fame to yourself, but not so much the demon thing....Is miss waitress religious?"
Amity sighed, "No..at least I do not think so..I did not ask directly.."
Boscha let out a big exhale, "Amity...you are a demon..that is a rather big deal if she is..."
"Well..she doesn't go to church much..hasn't been for at least two years maybe more..I don't think she would burn me.."
Boscha rolled her eyes, "'Think' So you are not sure.."
"I am pretty sure..you know I am good at sensing that kind of stuff.."
"You are the one risking angel-burns not me.." shrugged Boscha, "But..you still need to tell her who you are, you know how big of a deal that is to humans..80 percent run away screaming, 15 will start bowing to you and only the remaining five are able to act normally around you..if she isn't in those five percent.." Boscha let that sentence hang.
For a moment Amity didn't say a word, but then she nodded.
She didn't even want to imagine what it would be like if...well..if Luz reacted badly..but keeping it a secret..
The longer she dragged that out the worse it would be.
"Okay..I..I will tell her.."
Luz heard a knock on the door, and rushed to open it.
There stood Amity, smiling at her weakly.
After that things were a blur. They ate and talked as always and in a blink of an eye, there was no more food left on the table.
Luz could feel her nerves straining.
'You can do it!!'
"Ehm..can we..can we talk for a little bit?" asked Amity suddenly before Luz could say a word.
She immediately smiled, nodding vehemently, Luz did not know how to breach the topic of a date, but now Amity was giving her a perfect opportunity of 'talking for a little bit,' she now had to hope she would get a chance.
"What is it?" she asked.
"Eh..I...ehhh, you know it..I..."
Quickly, Luz's good mood turned to dust.
At a hunch, she was guessing whatever Amity was about to say it would be bad.
Did she decide she is too cool for Luz after all? Was this the last time they...they..
"It's okay..I get it," said Luz dejectedly, hanging her head low.
She wasn't really surprised of course, this was the norm for as long as she could remember. Actually..she was the stupid one for getting her hopes up, she should have recognized this was too good to be true..
"What?" asked Amity with a slight frown.
"I..I get it, I am too.." Luz pointed to herself vaguely with a fake smile, "It's okay..you don't have to explain.."
...
For a moment Amity looked at her with a searching look, seemingly at a loss for words.
"I set that restaurant on fire."
...
For a second Luz froze, looking up to Amity who was unflinchingly returning her gaze.
"Run that by me again?"
"I-I saw that woman slap you, so-eh, after everyone left and there was no risk of any humans being hurt, I set her restaurant on fire."
...
...
"Why?" asked Luz simply, confused beyond all measure.
"I..I just," Amity took a breath, appearing to calm down, "I was not about to let that stand. She slapped you." She said, as if that explained everything.
Luz blushed down to her neck hearing that, but she was still confused.
"But..why? I was just a.."
"I kept going to that restaurant to see you..for no other reason."
Luz could feel her heart beating in her ears as everything else faded to the background, there was just Amity in front of her.
The girl was now beet red, looking everywhere but at Luz and still.
"You...you.." Luz's voice vanished, she didn't have words, she didn't know what to say.
So instead of addressing that, she decided to focus on something else.
"What if someone caught you?!" She admonished, completely forgetting that she could maybe be horrified hearing that her crush set a restaurant on fire.
Amity snorted, actually snorted.
"I am a Demon. Nobody is going to catch me," she said with complete certainty, before freezing.
Luz blinked, before lifting her eyebrows and even grinning. Amity being a demon heh..with her setting things on fire it sounded strangely fitting..Luz could not help but find it endearing, also..confidence..Luz really..really liked the confidence in that statement.
And before she knew what she was doing..
She grinned, petting Amity's head affectionately before she could stop herself, "Sure you are Avocado.."
"AV?! Avocado??" Blinked Amity, now red as a beet, both her hands swiftly raising to her head, carefully touching where Luz's hand was seconds ago.
"Ah.." Luz flinched, quickly retracting her hand in shock, clearly she was more unbalanced than she thought, letting it slip..she did not mean to call her that out loud..much less touch Amity's head.
'Calm down LUZ!'
"Its-its a nickname," she strutted out, "..like...you really like Avocado right?"
Amity slowly shook her head, her eyes still blown wide open, "I do not know what that is..."
Now Luz frowned, "You ordered The avocado burger every single time without fail back at the restaurant...and every burger I ever made for you here also had avocado in it.."
"OH...the green thing?"
Luz just stared for a moment, almost forgetting how nervous she was, "The green thing? You seriously do not know what it is called?"
...
...
"Why did you order it all the time if you do not like it?"
"Ehh..I..ehm, it's not that I do not like it, I don't really care..I...when I first came there, to the restaurant, you were there..I was too busy and too distracted listening to you..so..I ordered it because it looked neat in the picture..and it was the only thing I remembered from the whole menu."
Luz was pretty sure she was about to go nuclear, melt and then explode. This was not fair! Amity couldn't just say things like that.
She looked away, her whole face on fire. Luz needed a moment to gather herself, but she didn't want silence, so instead..
"I want us to go on a date."
...
Amity seemed to be caught completely off guard..
...
"Is..is that a no..?"
"Sorry, I am not sure what a date is..we don't really have anything like that in Hell.."
Now Luz was getting slightly agitated. Was Amity hiding behind the demon thing?
"OH..so you are like a real real demon??" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
Amity nodded, closing her eyes and swaying her head left to right, only for a pair of horns to sprout at the top of her head. She opened her eyes and now Luz could see that her irises looked as if they were on fire, burning bright golden.
...
...
"So..what is a date?"
...
...
"Luz?"
...
Luz slowly got up, "Bathroom..give me a moment.."
She didn't wait for Amity's response, turning on her heel and retreating, shutting the doors behind her.
...
'Well shit...'
...
Honestly, Luz..she just..what?
Amity was a demon?
Not like a haha I am a demon! But an actually demonic being from hell..
And she was here and presumably into her.
...
Somehow, this revelation cleared her mind fully. Her crush fading slightly due to the seriousness of the situation.
What the hell should she do now?
'Is dating a demon like a sin? Probably right...'
Did she care tho?
There was a wayward thought about Amity's intentions, but she had been coming to Luz's apartment for two weeks, so that was swiftly pushed away..if Amity wanted to do something untowards to her, she would have done so already.
'Isn't Amity just...Amity?' The thought surprised her a little bit, but thinking about it...that was how things were..right?
She would have to learn more about this whole Demon situation, but at its core..she did not actually care.
Luz got up, opening the doors and returning to Amity.
"'A date' is when two people go to a restaurant, or to some other place, it is kinda..romantic ritual, something we do to get closer...honestly what we have been doing were dates already, but also kinda not..so I want to go on a proper date.."
When Luz finished her explanation she found Amity gaping at her like a fish, so red Luz would swear she was about to catch on fire and considering the demon thing, that could have been a real possibility as far as she knew.
"A--a--a courting ritual??" She squeaked with a voice so high Luz was sure only dogs would be able to hear the whole extent of it.
"It isn't anything so serious.."
"CourTING ri--ri-ri.." Amity seemed stuck, which brought a smile to Luz's face.
It would require more work, from both of them.
They would have to explain a lot of things to each-other about their respective cultures..case and point, Amity ongoing freakout..
Also...Luz was not looking forward to explaining this to her mother..
But she could really see it, Luz could see them lasting. They would be against the odds..but..seeing the girl in front of her, Luz could feel it in her heart, she was going to everything in her power to make this a success.
Now she just had to put in the work to make that vision a reality.
